Vinyl tape, electrical tape, turns to a gooey mess in just a few years. Use heat shrink tubing instead. Keep up the hard work.

Your doing an amazing job!, but when splicing in the new connector, you need to use heat shrink tubing, even better, there is a 3m product, I believe, that has a plastic tube with a solder joint in the middle, two glue joints after, then shrinkage. Totally superior and easy to use.

You and the Goonzquad have the same issues with soldering wires. Here is a little tip: tin each wire first and then solder them together for a solid joint. The solder transfers heat better than the wires. So, if you put a drop of solder on the iron and heat up the wires with the solder puddle, it will heat up faster. When you put a drop of solder on the wire, if the wire is hot, it should suck the solder right into the wire. Then, you heat up one wire and touch the other to it, it will solder instantly. Depending on how much solder you added when tinning the individual wires, you may not even have to add any more solder. If you can't see the wire strands through the solder a little, then the joint is too cold.
