TO ANYONE COMPLAINING ABOUT THEM TALKING OVER SCENES, PLEASE READ THIS: I’m with you. The dialogue in these next few seasons (including this one) is GOD TIER writing and I understand wanting them to savor every word of it and to not miss a single bit of important lore/plot info as this show is a major, sprawling opera with tons of plot lines and incredible dense, layered lore and world building. But stop for a second. These are pre-recorded and they’re already done with Season 1. I know it can be annoying, but let them watch the show how they enjoy it. It’d probably be better for them to rewatch any scenes or info they missed during editing than to stop, pause, and rewind the show multiple times during a reaction because that can just create awkwardness and it can really hinder the natural, organic flow of jokes and enjoyment. AND TO ANYONE COMMENTING MENTIONING OR ALLUDING TO FUTURE EVENTS IN THE SHOW: STOP IT. Even if you’re being incredibly vague, just don’t do it. Please. So, about the Mountain and the horse... the winner of a joust got to keep the loser's horse and armour. The Mountain killed the horse to keep Loras from getting it, and fully intended to kill Loras to keep from giving up his armour. The Mountain doesn't do well with losing.

Robert Baratheon is not a moral man, but not a bad man at heart. I think he was probably a more or less honorable man when he was younger. Robert strikes me as a man that has always had a bad temper, but usually had his buddy Ned to help keep him out of any serious trouble. What ruined Robert was the Targaryen family. They stole the woman he loved, and, according to him, killed her. They also killed some important members of Ned's family. I think that Robert, deep down, is still terrified of anyone with even a drop of Targaryen blood in them. Beyond that, he never suspected that the Iron Throne would be a gilded cage. He doesn't get to do many of the things that fulfill him. In addition to that, he's surrounded by people who plot against him behind his back. No wonder he's in a foul mood. Cersei alone would drive any man to drink.

Catelyn is putting Ned and her daughters in more danger for no reason right now, she should be in Winterfell preparing for war. Ned and the girls are collateral for the Lannisters, the council wants him gone cause he values truth over personal interest (Littlefinger) and the greater good (Varys). Ned was led by "his colleagues" down the same path as the last hand and his naïve self is putting his family in danger because he wants to play detective, what he's doing is worse than Catelyn. These northern honest people don't know how to play the game, Sansa was the only one playing it smart by playing dumb. I understand why the north is separate from the rest of westeros, it's really a clash of cultures and values.

The joking around regarding old enemies is because of two things: (1) they were once on the same side, and maybe even friends, and (2) they understand that each was honor bound to fight for their side. It wasn't even they not having personal beef, it's that they know the other had no choice. And I understand that modern gangs or motorcycle clubs or whatever have something similar, but the difference here is that while many years ago they were honor bound to fight for different sides, _now_ they are honor bound to fight for the same side. It's not necessarily for life in this setting, but that doesn't mean vows mean anything less.

Years ago I went to a homeschool group for a meetup with the kids for a play date. The woman hosting that week had her 5/6 year old son running in from playing to grab some of momma's milk. I was shocked. Never went back. That is some twisted stuff right there. When I saw this episode, I was thinking, yep there are still crazies like that in the world. Ned wouldn't have stood a chance against Jaime. The show made it look better, but Ned's not a very good fighter. Jaime's literally the best fighter in all of Westeros at this point, and Martin made it clear he was playing with Ned for fun. That's why he knocked out the guy who interfered, because he was having fun.

Oh. Something I just put together. Ned was a badass fighter back in the day. Jaime is obviously disappointed that his fight with Ned isn't much of a challenge but it makes sense as Ned spent the last 18 years or so raising a family while Jaime has been jousting and sword fighting.

Jousting started out where it was to the death, but it progressed to be more like sports and where the winner was determined by points rather than fighting to the death. I would say based on the previous match where o'l buddy died and the crowds reaction they are not playing to the death and didn't expect that knight to have died.
