All of them are Grouped as Group A gazetted officers starting at LEVEL 10 pay scale and their official appointment letters will be written with their names with the preffix Drs. The only profession that calls themselves Drs but the Govt dsnt are Physiotherapist. They are kept at level 6 same as Govt Staff Nurses. And are not given the preffix Dr .

If she was a neurosurgeon, then she has all the right to call herself a doctor. But the guy was right-dentists are not doctors; and claiming that you are is misleading. It’s like a janitor calling themselves “a doctor of waste disposal”-it’s just weird. Why not be proud of your profession (whether dentist or janitor-both of which I deeply respect) rather than twisting & inflating your job title?… I would trust a dentist with my teeth & mouth, and that alone. Anything other than that (heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach, muscles, etc.)-forget about it. I’m trusting a doctor. Because that’s what they do.

I am a dentist, and I have heard this trolling all my life. Mostly from friends in other branches. Some have even addressed me as a glorified janitor (no offense to the profession... deep respects to people who keep things clean). That is so rude!!! As someone with chronic teeth issues due to genetics mixed with poverty and minimal dental care as a child and now having 3 children/pregnancies that take a toll on teeth as well…. THANK YOU for all you do. I have fillings in almost every tooth, I’ve had 3 teeth pulled, I have 3 crowns and root canals. I have an amazing dentist who for me has been borderline a psychologist for me through hard visits. The scariest work to get done that requires the most patient and caring person to do their job. Ps I can tell your an amazing person but how you respect janitors as well.

and also in Latvian, Russian, Estonian, Slovenian, and Finnish-probably many others as well, but I only know about these ones-use the combination 'teeth doctor' in their respective languages. Since at the end of the day, all doctors specialize in a specific field, be it lungs, hearts, reproductive organs, teeth, or anything else related to the human body, you do not get one doctor for everything anyway. Maybe a general practitioner, but they will just know basic overall stuff in order to send you to the correct specialist @@beldinlov13

US trained dentist here. We are doctors, just not medical doctors and I would never pretend to be a physician or act like I do what physicians do. My patients call me doctor (lol or sweetie or dear, with older patients). I also wouldn't introduce myself as a "doctor" first thing when someone asks if that's what most ppl are all upset about - I would simply say dentist. We do learn about the whole human body though, at least in the US. The curriculum is pretty similar to medical school the 1st and 2nd year. 3rd and 4th year we specialize in oral health/oral medicine/dental specific classes. Annnnyway, all that said, we do some intense surgeries in the mouth. Extractions where we are drilling & removing patient's jaw bones, placing dental implants, full mouth reconstructions, IV sedation, disinfecting and removing nerve tissue, doing oral biopsies and so on. That's just on the general side. Oral surgeons are DDS/MDs usually and do 4-6 years POST dental school training. Sometimes our patients are really sick, I have to know about their systemic issues before procedures bc I can technically kill them . Ppl forget we do irreversible things to your mouth which can affect your whole body. And we definitely can get sued like any physician liability wise. It's not all just fillings and cleanings. But alas, the public doesn't care. It's fine. I'm glad most ppl don't need these intensive dental treatments and only see the most basic things we do. Most ppl hate the dentist anyway :'D

Seriously, they are able to prescribe everything from antibiotics to opiates and administer gases. They also deal directly with bones, nerves, infections and everything that can happen within the mouth/gums/nerves. It’s outrageous to think that is not a doctor - just with expertise in most matters of the mouth.

because anything that has an association with human health doesn’t automatically make you a doctor. also being a doctor doesn’t depend on your opinion, it’s a status that you earn after years of education and you get a certificate for that. and since we’re talking about who’s considered a medical doctor specifically, dentist are most definitely not MDs. they would get that title if they were doctors, but they get the dentist title instead. BTW being a dentist is totally cool and an amazing, important job. it’s just kind of stupid that they trying to convince you that they’re doctors. it’s like nurses trying to call themselves doctors. you don’t have to be a doctor to make yourself feel more important. if you don’t have the title, you’re not a doctor, simple is that. it’s not something you can call someone as an opinion.

True that depending on the country the recognition of dentists changes. FYI a dentist is a medical professional who is skilled and licensed to practice prevention, diagnosis & the treatment of malformation, diseases, and injuries in the teeth, mouth and jaws. And like the girl in the video says it takes years of experience and residency especially in countries like the USA. Why else do you think they charge an arm and a leg for their services.

All the dentists, or orthodontists you’ve probably went to whether it’s a root canal or a cavity takes a lot of precision and technique dealing with the limited space they are working with.

no I wouldnt, the closest thing we have,we call it a podo therapist, as it is in line with physiotherapy but I live in Europe so I dont think its the same. If there was a major issue in your mouth you actually do have to go to a proper doctor though, not a dentist. You go to an oral surgeon or an ENT or maybe a plastic surgeon... Not a dentist.

I had a guy get down on me for my education when we first met. Let me say, I do not make a big deal about my education (masters degree), nor do I think someone without a degree is lacking in any way and this guy asked! But any time I said something he didn't agree with or he said something I didn't have knowledge of he'd say, "Come on, college girl, you really don't know this?" Or, "I didn't think someone with a degree would feel this way." Made me feel 2 inches tall the way he was going on. It was obvious being college educated made him feel insecure, despite me showing an interest in his career, which was pretty successful, so not sure where the insecurity was coming from. But when I told him I wasn't interested in a second date, he accused me of being prejudiced against him because he didn't go to college. Pretty sure I dodged a bullet there. 🤦🏻‍♀️

To be fair she seemed a bit insecure herself and trying to lift herself up. But I respect her nonetheless, and that guy was out of place to try and call her out in that circumstance. But if you’re a dentist, just call yourself a dentist. Be clear and proud of who you are. Saying “doctor” is very misleading. A lawyer (who is a “doctor of the law”) and theologian (“doctor of theology”) is misleading to call themselves a doctor. Same with a dentist, who has a totally different degree in teeth & mouth health. That’s just a fact, sorry :/

In my country dentists are called dentists, they are not recognized as doctors. The training here is different so I guess that’s why. They can be called doctors if they get a doctorate but not just from getting licenciatura. I didn’t know in US it was like that 😱 Odontólogo or ortodoncista depending on the specialization is more common to use here.

lol no, this is incorrect. In the US, dentists removal wisdom teeth. Usually, they're oral surgeons, who are drs who complete dental school and specialize in OMFS residency. During that residency, they can choose to also get their MD. It's either 4 years after dental school or 6 years after dental school if they're doing the DDS/MD tract.@@PippyPappyPatterson

I have a doctorate and my husband has a high school diploma & has done really well for himself in management. I am constantly amazed at his people skills, event planning, ease at public speaking & ability to navigate workplace politics. Some of these are natural gifts and some due to his military training. I agree with some of your statements & I wouldn't devalue your husband's accomplishments. However, the real point is that on this date, this man chose to argue with someone he should be trying to impress. Yes, the man asks the woman out on a date, so he is trying to impress her. He showed himself to be combative. While you may have a doctorate in a field like education, your income may not exceed significantly what your husband makes. However, I believe this man felt intimidated that she had an earning potential that far outstripped what he could command.

In Norway the word for dentist is 'tannlege', which literally translates to 'tooth doctor'. The same is true for many other languages as well, e.g. German and Japanese.

Most languages word for dentist translates directly as "tooth doctor". They're doctors. Being a specialist in a specific medical field doesn't suddenly mean you're not a doctor. And yes, oral health is medical. People can die from untreated tooth infections. How the hell is that not medical?

Just because we don’t use the term colloquially for everyone, doesn’t mean they are not tested, titled, & officially recognized as a doctor. General doctors are simply the most encountered by general public. Being a doctor just means you have the highest recognized level of specialization within your profession. Medical doctors = M.D. Dentists have: D.D.S. = Doctor of Dental Surgery and D.M.D = Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Dental Medicine Pharmacists have: PharmD = Doctor of Pharmacy Academics have: PhD = Doctor of Philosophy

Yeah, actually dentists that do “residency” are those who try to apply for specialty after graduation, a set of stuck up tryhards (typically not all). A DMD can work the day they graduate, unlike MDs who study extra years in order to practice. So yeah, big red flag from both, the dude wasn’t cool about it but she ain’t that type of doctor lol. I say I’m a dentist but ppl still call me doc

From her accent, she's probably Indian. In India, dentists are considered doctors even though dentists do not go through medical school, they go through dental school. So to boost their egos, in India, dentists refer to themselves as "doctors" instead of just saying "I'm a dentist". But the guy was not wrong.
