Courage is not an absence of fear,” says Mellody Hobson, co-CEO and president of Ariel Investments. “It’s overcoming it.” Hobson, who experienced financial instability throughout her childhood, set out to understand money. And once she did, she decided to spread that knowledge to help others feel financially empowered. Hobson believes in the power of women: When we surrender our dreams of being rescued by someone else, we realize how powerful we can become. She also believes that diversity isn’t just “the right thing to do.” Creating and fostering a more diverse workplace, where your conference rooms reflect the world outside, is the smart thing to do. Together with Loehnen, Hobson explores how we can see, understand, and embrace difference-and at the same time, not allow difference to influence how we consider a person.

Awesome podcast episode! 👏 Mellody Hobson nailed it with her take on financial empowerment and workplace diversity. 💼 She's all about making finance accessible and helping people improve their lives with money 💰💡. I was particularly struck by how she's stayed passionate about her one job at Ariel Investments since graduating college 🎓 - that's a rare commitment! She shared some interesting thoughts on value investing and why it works for her.📈 The part about workplace diversity and social justice was enlightening too, especially how she’s advocating for better representation and inclusivity. It's great that she uses her experience to push for social change.💪🌍 Loved her analogy of being a 'boyar' inside corporate America, learning and contributing, while also advocating for financial literacy and social justice. Lastly, her thoughts on the importance of 'color bravery' instead of 'color blindness' were really profound 🌈. It was a refreshing perspective that invites more dialogue about race and inclusion. Great chat overall! 👍 Has anyone else found their 'jam' in their work the way Mellody has with finance? And how do you see the conversation on racial and workplace diversity evolving in the future?

40:40 Diversity gets overwhelming for MANY people who sincerely cares but the WEIGHT of RACIAL PREJUDICE is too much for some to discuss to the point of (1) Understanding (2) Seeing the Visual without turning away (3) and taking Action with HOPEFUL OUTCOMES.

I love Elise, I’m sure she’s a great person, I know she went to Yale and is obviously very intelligent...but, for comic relief, you have to listen to how some of the questions are phrased. Example: “When you, think back, what’s your, what’s your favorite? (Keeps talking) I wanna talk about financial literacy and I wanna talk about social justice, and I know you’ve been, it’s your one job right?” W. H. A. T.

Love your podcasts, however when interviewing the guest, could you just nod your head in agreement or something without constant audible moaning type of sound. It takes away from concentration of the message being delivered. Other than that fantastic presentations!! Thank you!

As a black male, I feel like a misfit. Generally speaking, I'm treated better by white people. I wish this wasn't the case, because I desperately want to be accepted by other black people without having to sacrifice my personal sovereignty.

That’s how you interpreted that little story? She was saying that she loved her job and the work she does there. That’s it. Naturally, if someone moves from job to job, that likely indicates that they didn’t like something about the job. She hasn’t had that experience. It doesn’t make her better, she just found a company that she loved.
