A change in the rules means university sports stars in the US can now make money from their name, image and likeness, through sponsorship and endorsement deals. But will they ever get paid to play? The FT talks to athletes, agents and policymakers to see how NIL is changing the game and whether the age of amateurism is dead.

My great grandfather played basketball for Villanova in 1919. He was kicked off the team when someone discovered he was playing ball in “paid” games in Philly. He had a tattoo on his arm which he kept covered while playing at school. Story goes…After a home game, a spectator that lost money on one of those paid games, decided to oust my grandfather by pulling the bandage off his tattoo.

It's was long overdue for them to able to make money off them name and image. The coaches and colleges were doing it, so the athletes should be able to do it also.

If they want to make money off of their respective sport, then they should go to the professional leagues. Also, they should have insurance policies covering injuries that are career ending. Also, players should be paid a set amount determined by the NCAA if they are going to be paid regardless of their position or the school that they are attending.@@TickleMeElmo55

No other country has college sports. Instead pro teams would have youth teams that they use to train young athletes. These kids would be paid by the pro teams. Hence why Luka Sonic I turned pro at 13 when he signed with real Madrid.

Bringing these so-called experts into the universities is helpful yet dangerous. Student athletes must be free to make their own conscious and educated choices and be allowed to choose who they want to work with, learn from, and partner with.

its true, you pay $ 100,000. for a straight A or B high schooler to go to you collegee , 40, 000 per quarter, so 120k a year and yet can't get coach to get a 40 dollar meal after game or friendship, (student must fund they own 120k, plus housing their own food,) yet Collegee wins off my performance which my sport my not pan out but my reason to be their is to learn!!!

No. Olympians can already sell their names and likeness to anyone. That's why they're in Coca-Cola and McDonald's commercials. NIL just allows college athletes to do the same.

On typical U.S. college, there's a lot more college sports teams for women. For sports teams that only have one team for each gender, usually there's only football for men. But at the same time, gymnastics, field hockey, volleyball, beach volleyball, and tennis for women only. So that's extremely unfair and sexist!

Are televised sports NOT big business? Is college sport more a money maker for the schools than the actual EDUCATION being done there? Ask yourself those questions and then you'll see why FT would cover this.
