This video unpacks requirements for the testing of integrated fire protection and life safety systems in NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®. Since the requirements for integrated testing were added to the 2018 edition of the Life Safety Code and are now starting to become more broadly applied, this is a trending industry topic.
For any new or existing occupancies, Chapter 12 states that integrated fire protection and life safety system testing must follow the requirements of 9.11.4.1. Using NFPA LiNK you can easily navigate to this section of the code.
When performing basic testing of an integrated system, the responses of the subordinate systems need to be verified. The systems must be observed to function and operate as intended, beyond previous testing requirements that were limited to confirming a signal at the connection between integrated systems.
NFPA 4 integrated testing is required for integrated fire protection and life safety systems in high-rise buildings and in integrated systems that include a smoke control system. NFPA 4 provides a detailed procedure to follow that includes building an integrated testing team, designating a testing agent, and creating a test plan.
