They got him a banana, nutty bars, and a coke. In TV, at least where I worked - everyone has WEIRD eating habits. One guy seems like he only eats oranges; one girl seems like she only eats peanuts; one guy seems like he doesn't ever eat at all...It's a big joke to make fun of everyone's 'favorite' food. It's a hysterical gift, especially if you know the TV industry.

I always bring my boss flowers on her bday because she's awesome and I love her to death. I bought her a book once, too. But if I had fucking CENK for a boss, I'd know months in advance what I was buying that dude. Working for TYT looks like so much fun, man. Gotta show your appreciation when you get the opportunity. Banana and nutty bars ain't cutting it. Custom t-shirt, coffee mug, music, movie, a skit, anything. Just put some thought into it. Don't take a boss like that for granted.

You said health nut crap. A nutty bar is more like a candy bar. You don't even know what the gift was, and you ridicule it. I actually work in this industry, and giving these kinds of gifts is normal. When you work with someone for 10 hour shifts, you see all their weird eating habits they have to keep themselves energetic and awake for the high stress job. You really have no idea what you're talking about, and when presented with the fact you have no idea, you get defensive.
