You would think the bearings should last longer. Looks like salt water was in there and corroded the bearings. I did my VL1500 bearings last year at 70 000 Km, 44 000 mile. The taper bearings have larger contact area and can take more load. Very informative video, thanks.

Hi Dana, great informative video, I'm surprised that the bearings were in that shape after 11K miles, I can only assume that either you live close to the sea or the bearings are susceptible to getting wet and have been the victims of road salt.
@bikerstuff2
@bikerstuff2 4 ай бұрын
Both. We live about a mile from the sea and those bearings don't have the protection they need

At 11:31 in the video I observed what looked like a crack in the upper inner bearing race ?? I disagree with you about not using any lube on press fit bearings unless you heat the bearing first . Any way good job on getting rid of those antique bearings . Have not seen this type in a very long time ...

What a horrible looking bearing after just 11,000 miles, more suited to California than Calstock! We used to get split pins, circlips, brass fittings etc in boxes like those and they're still in use with me long after they've been emptied. Are those stem risers reversible, they look like they could be? I find warming with a heat gun soon expands and loosens the lower inner bearing. I now know what's meant by a hot mic! Great info Dana, cheerfully and expertly delivered, well done.

Assuming that this bike isn't that old, why or how have these bearings failed so quickly?
@bikerstuff2
@bikerstuff2 4 ай бұрын
It's just a bad choice of bearing. Also, as someone else mentioned, it doesn't rain in California where the bike was built, whereas England is known for it.

Those original bearings looked like crap. Surprised that ball bearings were used in the neck or headstock as you call it. Could you have removed the front assembly as one piece without removing the fork tubes?

Thats really bad the headstock bearings have failed at such a low milage surely zero should be responsible for that under fair use policy and you enquired? No bike should need headstock beaings that low on miles
@bikerstuff2
@bikerstuff2 4 ай бұрын
The service manual states they should be inspected and repacked at 12k miles or 2 years. The bike is 3 1/2 years old, so they have a get out. However, no headstock should need that much servicing.

May I please ask that you unclasp your hands and put them at your sides so you can emphasize your comments much better than by moving them up and down in front of you. This way you would be more natural in your presentation and normal while talking about what you did fixing the headstock bearings. It's just that I notice on every video Gary records of you Dana, you clasp your hands in front of you so much it seems unnatural, to me anyways. Otherwise I enjoy your videos and important tips of quick fixes and repairs. Cheers dear lady 🙂
