Every business guru tells us to niche, and they're not wrong. In this video, I'm sharing my 3 step framework on how to define your niche. I use my own art as an example and give another off the cuff greeting card example. I will also show you how you can validate if the niche you came up with has some legs.
This exercise is straightforward and easy to follow,, but it will also get you thinking, and that's a good thing. This guide is intended for creative makers who sell physical goods.
Niching is not a requirement, nor is it the end all be all solution to all your business challenges, but it's really going to help you gain some clarity which will in turn help your business grow.
Here is how this video is organized:
00:00 Short intro - niching for artists
00:45 Should you niche?
01:23 3 Step Framework for defining your niche
01:44 Step 1: Medium, style
02:13 Step 2: Subject matter
03:21 Step 3: Who & How
04:11 Example of using this framework to find a greeting card niche
05:25 You're not stuck with whatever niche you pick
07:20 Do market research to validate your niche
09:00 Want more on this topic?
You don't have to buy an online course to learn this because it's free in this short 9 minute video. :) However, if you do like what you hear, we'd love for you to subscribe to our channel, and share with your creative friends that may find this helpful.

Great video! I was about to suggest making a video on that same topic, of how to reach out or find your niche audience. Especially if you have "think outside of the box" tips for where to look for them. I feel like everyone first goes to Instagram and common social media platforms, but I often wonder if there are other places like forums, reddit, private facebook, groups, etc, and how viable it is to do that long-term (or if the effort-reward balance is worth it).
@EasySundayClub

That’s a good call to look in non obvious places like Reddit, FB groups. I think IG algorithm can put us in an echo chamber too where it could be hard to come up with new ideas. I’ll think about your question more, on how to find your audience/customer once the niche is identified.

Hey Cathy, I love the fit of the shirt you're wearing in this video, I have seen a few similar shirts in your other videos and I really like them. Would you mind sharing where you shop for them?

As you can tell I like my comfy but not too loose sweatshirts 😆. This pullover is from Roolee but looks like it’s sold out. My other similar ones are from madewell and Marine layer.

When I compare my work to other artists in my similar niche, do you think you should price your work around the same price range as others? For example, I have some artwork on consignment with a local shop and sell the work for $100, (I get 50%). Other artists sell their work that is similar for $40-$80 range which I feel is low... should I just match the price that I sell on consignment with the local shop, or try to price it in the same range as others as to not lose potential customers? I haven't listed any of the work online yet because I can't make up my mind.

Are your work really similar or they’re similar subject matter? In many pricing studies, lower prices don’t always mean higher demand. I price it based on what makes sense for my profit margin as I think that’s a more sustainable approach. Pricing is an extremely subjective concept with art and you don’t know how profitable other artists who price their work lower are.
@clarel6252

@@EasySundayClub That's true. I don't know how profitable they are, but some of the stores I see on Etsy that sell similar things have over 17,000 sales which is crazy to me. The work is not similar in subject matter, no, I guess not. But in application and category it is similar (ie. home design wall hanging art). Thanks

@@EasySundayClub I also noticed that a lot of their listings are "made to order" so there is a 3-4 week time frame before they ship it out. So they have a lot of mock ups I guess and then I think when someone purchases it then they make it...Which makes sense, because right now I am just making stuff and would put the finished product online.
