Vocal range is an incredibly important part of becoming a better singer.
But what is vocal range, how can you find yours and how do you use it to make better choices for yourself as an artist.
Today, I'll answer all these questions about vocal range and much more. Then, towards the end, we'll take a look at a simple scale you can use to find your range in less than a minute. The scale works for guys and girls, so it doesn't matter how you identify.
Let's get started.
Vocal range is known as the measurement from the lowest note you can sing to the highest note you can sing.
Now vocal range is always written as two letters followed by two numbers with a hyphen between them like this: Ex. C3-G5.
The first set of numbers and letters indicates the lowest note you can sing, in this case a C in the 3rd octave (below middle C).
The second set of numbers and letters is the highest note you can sing, in this case a G in the 5th octave.
Range is written this way as a very simple way to see the extremes of someone's voice. If I know I can sing from an E3 to an E5, I know that a lot of songs that are in that range will fit my voice.
But in addition to knowing how low or high you can sing, there are lots of good reasons to knowing your vocal range.
The first big reason is that knowing your vocal range will help you determine your voice type. Voice types such as Bass, Tenor, Alto and Soprano are determined by many factors. But vocal range is a big part of them.
So if you know your vocal range, you can make a pretty educated guess as to your voice type.
The second reason to know your vocal range is to know where your weak spots are. Many singers have an audible break or bridge point in their voice where they'll be tempted to pull up or disconnect into falsetto.
This may happen on a different note for everyone. But if you know your vocal range, it will be much easier to pinpoint where this trouble spot is so that you can work on it.
The third reason to find your vocal range is to measure your progress in vocal training. I've had many students who start taking lessons and are unaware of how much and quickly they develop.
While this is largely due to very effective singing techniques, it's always good for the student to know how and by how much they're progressing.
If you are just starting vocal training, it's good to test out your range so you can get a before and after snapshot of your range. Then once you've been training for a while, you can test it again to see how much you've improved.
The final reason to find your vocal range is to pick songs that fit your voice. Like I mentioned earlier, if you know that your vocal range goes up to an E5, then you can probably choose songs that go up to that note.
Alternatively, if you're having challenges singing above an E4, you might want to choose songs that stay below that note until your vocal training helps you hit the notes better.
Now that you understand the reasons to find your vocal range, here's a very simple exercise to help you find vocal range immediately.
The exercise is simple:
1. Sing an "Ah" vowel (as in "Awesome") and find the note C4 (middle C) in your voice.
2. Now, sing a descending C major scale going down to the lowest note in your voice.
3. Mark the lowest note you can sing.
4. Next, sing the C4 again but this time sing an ascending C major scale going up to the highest note in your voice.
5. Mark the highest note you can sing.
Now, write both of those notes next to each other with a hyphen between them.
It may look something like this:
Ex. C3-G5.
And that's how you find your vocal range.
Remember you can use this to know how low and high you can sing, determine voice type, find your weak spots, measure your progress and pick songs to fit your voice.

There were areas that were too low for my comfort zone and I was getting very frustrated, having to keep re-recording until I hit the note. I think im just going to have to bring up the keys a couple of notes higher, but will do that once I learn what low note I can hit comfortably!!! Will be doing this exercise tomorrow when I can turn on my keyboard, thank u!

If that is truly a picture of you, there is nothing wrong with your looks. I would say you are good looking. Since you are not a good judge of your looks my guess is that you are not a good judge of your intelligence either. Do you know that intelligence is mostly a measurement of how much you have learned in life? People say I am intelligent but I love to learn and I read voraciously so I know a little about a lot of things. But really I am not smarter by nature than anyone else and I am dumber than many others in many subjects. So if you want to increase your "intelligence" just increase your knowledge. :)

My vocal range is from C3 to G5, but I was actually wondering if I’m a contralto or an alto, so I sent a voice recording (of me singing a song) to my niece who is a voice teacher. This was the feedback I received: I finally got a moment to really listen to your recording- you sound lovely!! My vote would be alto because of how clear and ringy your middle and upper notes were sounding. Contraltos tend to be really rare (at least in the classical/operatic world), but I think the main takeaways from voice parts are that it’s not really about what notes you can and can’t reach, but what sounds and most importantly feels the best!! (Especially with our grad students you can hear altos with very high notes that sing alto because it’s where they feel best and sound best in most music. :)) 3:14

I can subharmonic a D1, growl a F1, and vocal fry an G1. (However these techniques aren't polished and still pretty shaky. Hopefully each time I come back I can say they have gotten stronger and more audible as well.)

May this be considered an actual improvement? Btw, when I was at school I was in a choir and sang as a "soprano" but now that seems pretty much impossible for my voice. Was I really a soprano? Hi, firstly just wanna say I love your vids, I've just subscribed. :) Just for some context, I'm a female in her late teens who has had no vocal training whatsoever, aside from one time when I was in my mid-teens. A lot of my friends tell me that my voice is quite high, which I think meant my speaking voice. But every time I do these vocal range tests, I find myself able to sing from C#3 up to G5. If I had to guess my tessitura, it's around E3 to C5, but that's just from what I can tell. Once I go lower than E3, my notes can sound a little off-pitch, and while I can hit G5 with my head voice, I begin to struggle slightly starting at around D5. Anyway, sorry for the long block of text, but it's a habit of mine to do a lot of observations with these kinds of things. :D

I’ve had a very entertaining vocal journey. As a kid singing soprano was easy. Early puberty was alto and tenor, once the testosterone hit it dropped to bass-baritone with most of my upper register staying in head or mixed voice. Then college was all bass. My voice has gotten progressively lower and wider over time. Now I’m in my 30s and I can sing in the 1st and 2nd octaves all day and in the 0’s with subharmonics. I can hit notes still in the 6th octave most days with high falsettos or breaking into whistle. But that wears out real quick and is a strain. But always is fun to break out a Mariah Carey or Mr. Big song at karaoke as a 6’4” bald guy with a big red beard after introducing myself in a deep bass speaking voice. I appreciate seeing videos making it easier for more people to understand their ranges and learn where to sing to avoid strain or injury.

Im 26 , is there hope i get lower than Bb2/A2 ?
@catalystguitarguy
@catalystguitarguy Жыл бұрын
@@ivblizzard3616 TL;DR: Yes there is hope, but no certainty. there are so many factors that determine that. Longer: bass voices tend to get lower with age. You can always learn alternate techniques for extended lower range too. like subharmonics, chest fry so long as you don't go overboard and hurt yourself by doing too much in one go. it takes a lot of practice for those to be practical/usable or have much stamina. for lower range it's mostly biology determining your lower limit, can usually train and practice for higher notes though. I'm always trying to figure out how or if I can get lower and so far at 34, my voice has crept down a bit more every year or two roughly another semitone or thereabout. Just figure out your limits of safely and comfortably singing, and avoid straining or forcing yourself too low. in my experience you're more likely to do harm forcing lower than reaching up higher. and training your upper range and lower range alternating tends to help balance out overall vocal control on the other extreme.

Can you help? I’ve become exhausted after training for 8 days now. I’ve been preparing for a song I’m recording that was sent to me by a successful writer and producer in Europe. Each time I’ve recorded, I’ve not liked the sound of these two A notes that are at he top of my range. I have a lovely Neuamnn mic but that’s just highlighting how much I don’t like the sound of those two notes. I’ve already tried to change the note into something else in the hope that the writer will think my version is better and not notice I can’t hit the A notes! When I used an analyser to check the pitch, it was fine...I just don’t like the way it sounds. After so many days of trying, I feel exhausted and less motivated to finish. The song is really beautiful and don’t normally like the melody and the lyrics. I can’t afford to fail here but the anxiety is getting so bad I’m not sleeping either. Shall I keep doing the exercises or should I take a few days off? I love your coaching. No issue there.

So I have a question for anyone who can help. Once I find my range that I'm comfortable with, without training to do more to start, how do I modify a song that might be higher or lower than my range? I've sung my whole life (in private because of severe stage fright despite people somehow hearing me and asking for me to sing more....tooo scary) but I think I have tended to always try to sing in the same octave as the song I'm singing (even knowing I can't hit some notes) while knowing after hearing it many times, to change the octave. I do have a keyboard and I know most of the keys but am not a keyboard player, but I'm thinking maybe somehow I can use that? I think part of my stage fright comes from not knowing my comfortable range (at least until this video) and from always singing in my falsetto range because I was always more comfortable there. However it could be too soft at times because I didn't know how to transition from it to my regular voice. Sorry so long. I just really want to be able to sing for family and friends. I'm an artist, as in painter, sculpter, digital art, quilter, and soap maker but photography and voice have always been my favorite. I want to sing. And I want to feel comfortable singing at random moments. Like when I'm cooking. Or when I'm making a quilt. Or... Anytime that I have music around me. But I don't want to be afraid to sing in ear shot of others no matter where I am singing.
