Sometimes you need to stay hidden to find rare or secretive wildlife but this isnt one of those times. I this video I head to Lynford Arboretum in search of some rare and lifetime first birds: The Hawfinch, Yellowhammer and the Brambling.

Yellow Hammers - I can remember massive numbers of them even 25 years ago Liam. But here in Cheshire the farmers crazy hedge cutting practises in spring with the hugely damaging flail cutter which smashes rather than cuts, has made them something of a rarity now. Nice to see those Hawfinches - Billy Bigbeaks we called 'em when I was a lad.

It’s pesticide that’s killing them not the hedge cutter they can fly away from that.
@Revelationscreation
@Revelationscreation 7 ай бұрын
@@juliehilton1701 No that's not what he meant... its the lack of hedges that is the main reason for their massive decrease. Hedges provide an extremely valuable habitat for yellowhammers. Pesticides don't affect yellowhammers as much, they are mainly fruit and seed eaters. What's really needed is more wild grass areas, meadows and small forests in agricultural areas, in France they seem to have done well in this regard, the declining use of pesticides due to prize rises has also helped. On my recent trip all bird numbers have gone up. Also seems as if species inhabiting the area increased- stones curlews, black winged kites, honey buzzards, booted eagles, short toed eagles, zitting cisticola's, melodious warblers, serin's and red backed shrikes are all species that I've recorded in the area for the first time in the 5 years I've birded the area.

I really enjoyed this, a nice relaxing vlog, and I do enjoy your honesty by telling us that the birds had moved away by the time you got there, other vloggers would have edited that out, and changed the narrative. I enjoy how you keep it real. Another great video from you.

Excellent share of a "real" experience seeking a target species. I managed a very dubious long-range silhouette view of Hawfinch about 3 years ago but have never managed any photos or footage. As for Brambling? Still on my "not yet seen" list. Good video Liam. Keep 'em coming mate! 👍🙂👍

Nice variety of birds there. I love the colouration of the yellow hammer, I don't know why, but I'm always surprised by how yellow they are!

Amazing view of all sorts of species, you must have been buzzing on the drive home! The shots of the yellowhammers and hawfinches were particularly lovely. Definitely an example of it always being worth asking what someone staring at seemingly nothing is actually looking at!

Looked like a quiet misty day. Good day in some ways, as birds can be reluctant to fly. And some animals come out in the cloak of low light dampness. Always enjoy joining your walks.

Childhood memories... I use to catch these 2 on nets as a kid. Usually I kept them for a few days up to a week before feeling bad enough about it to release them. There were so many more 30 years ago, so much more. I've stopped netting when I turned 17 and picked up fishing... you've reminded me of those times.

I’ve never seen a brambling or a hawfinch, I think hawfinches look really well groomed 😂. Hey let’s call it what it actually is, never mind a change in farming practices it’s an over use of herbicides and pesticides that is killing all the insects and wild flowers that provide the food for these birds! One question how many swallows did you see this year? I’d say 2, I used to see loads lining wires 2!! All year! It’s time to stop the pesticides it will affect the whole food chain once these birds and insects are gone there’s no bringing them back! Rant over but no apology for it xxx great video 👏🏻👏🏻
