Into Alaska - Finding a Remote Cabin & Portaging into a Glacier | 10-Days Family Camping in Alaskan & BC Wild E.11
The rain won't let up and we're all soaked to the bone. Out map notes say there's a cabin in the area but we can't find it. Our notes are 30 years old so, maybe it's not there anymore we figure. I pull up on a sand bar and I get out of the canoe and walk ahead. My wife Tori think's there's no cabin to be found but I see a faint trail going up the muddy bank into thick northern rainforest vegetation. We follow it and sure enough, we find the small trapper's cabin which is nestled into a stand of giant Sitka Spruce. The cabin had a large woodstove and many hooks for hanging cloths to dry. I cut a bunch of wood and got a nice fire going while Tori cooked up a delicious medal of poutine for dinner and heavy rain continued to pelt the tin roof.
When the next morning came, the rain hadn't let up. We cooked up breakfast, cleaned up the cabin and paddled away and the rain continued. Scenery was absolutely beautiful and the rain caused mountain side creeks to rush down from the heavens, seemingly pouring out of the clouds in some places. Alpine glaciers were all around us too and we got a great look at a majestic bald eagle. After paddling 35kms we front-ferried our canoe across the strong current of the outflow of Great Glacier's outwash lake where it rushes into the Stikine and made camp at a beautiful spot surrounded by quintessential northern rainforest. The spot is a remote BC Provincial Park serviced by jet boat, and has picnic tables, an outhouse, bear safe food cache and a couple fire rings.
The next day was me and Tori's wedding anniversary and it wasn't raining so hard anymore. We gathered some basic supplies, the kids and the canoe and portaged into Great Glacier's outwash lake where we weaved out canoe through the many large, beautiful ice bergs that had calved off the massive glacier. It was a surreal experience, but you’ll have to wait until the next episode to get a closer look at the glacier and all the icebergs.
