Thanks for this one, Bill. I like seeing stuff in this price range, although I know it sort of limits what you can talk about in regard to super "interesting" examples.

Happy is the man who bought an F.P.Journe Chronomètre à Résonance before someone strapped the prices into an ejector-seat and pulled the trigger! It's a truly magnificent watch, one which will surely become a real classic in watchmaking history . But for many of us it would now be stretching the watch-collection-budget up towards breaking point to get one - alas!
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed Jay! That's why I'd rather be lucky than smart! But here's the thing: had it taken a lead life boat to Davey Jone's Locker, I'd still have a great watch because the quality of the watch will not change (...well if I don't drop it down the garbage disposal..). Those who hitch their value of a watch to the resale value; never get much horology. Take care and be safe, Bill 😷

@@watchartsci I guess the only downside to a complicated F.P.Journe. is the servicing cost? I have heard that those guys sting like hornets! I know Patek are going to take me for a grand, more or less, every 5 years for my 5296G. I can just about swallow that - especially as I'm considering selling all my Rolex and Omega, and concentrating on Patek, Blancpain, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. (The older I get, the more I favour quality over quantity!)

Great video again! I only recently discovered your channel and find your well informed and balanced views truly informative and enjoyable. I am not much of a collector like real watch collectors but I have a collection of spaces watches (the mandatory Speedmaster Professional, Fortis Official Cosmonaut, Seiko Pogue and some old Soviet watches) and dive watches. I am a recreational (not serious) diver but don't use my watches for diving (I always use the digital G Shock Frogman for that) but just like dive watches. My office watch is a Muhl Glaschutte teutonia sport ii ks on strap which exists somewhere between dress watch and tool watch in not really being either. My personal opinion is that they key is to collect watches you really like or which you have a connection with. I am not an inverse snob and love many expensive watches (though my own watches top out at the Speedmaster Professional and Tudor Pelagos which many watch people would see as not much above entry level) but I also take great pleasure from my cheap Vostok Amphibia. One of the nice things about watches is it doesn't have to be that expensive if you find your own niche and look at watches just as watches or as an extension of another hobby. Great work with all your videos!

Hi John, I would rather find an affordable watch by a talented watchmaker than an expensive watch that I and most of our subscribers could not afford. The fun of watch collection for me is to find those gems where the general herd of collectors doesn't know enough to look. The Speedy Pro and Pelagos are very cool watches; especially the hand-wound real moon watch. Take care and stay safe, Bill 😷

Thx Bill, your picks are to the point _ as usual. I often considered the Perpetual Tourbillon but never pulled the trigger. Lower end tourbillons are often large and the one by Seagull used in the Perpetual takes up about 30% of the watch, giving it right way. Which then begs the question, if the quest for buying a tourbillon is to own a piece of high end jewelry, then does such a compromise makes sense?

Thanks Bill for the great video, i think Nomos is an awesome watch for an office and everyday watch, I have the Club Campus and very happy with it. I think also Sinn should be on the list, their 104 line is one of the best value for money sports watches, over-engineered, and very clean design. I think also Fortis makes great diver and pilots watches, and they are very well priced as well. The IWC perpetual calendars are dirt cheap at the moment, the Davinci line under 5k and the golden PC pilot is for around 5k on chrono24. I also wish to get a Remontoir watch but there is no way with the current prices :D
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 4 жыл бұрын
I only had room for 1 watch per feature (2 in a few places) and while Sinn is ok, I'm not sure about Fortis, even though you're right about their price. IWC still makes it difficult to know what you're paying for ... wish they'd reveal all of the movement bases in their watches... Take care, Bill

Nice one, Bill. I always recommend Junghans Max Bill or Georg Jensen by Koppel as an alternative to Nomos. I see them as the original design as opposed to Nomos. -And I guess there's something that triggers my horological rage/pretentiousness from the sleek marketing machine by Nomos.. lol.

Hi Bill! GM here again. Great vid. I was wondering how a regulator watch would fit into the categories of level of watch collector. I would assume it's for expert watch collectors since you were looking for one. Any literature on levels of watch collecting too?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 4 жыл бұрын
Hi GM ... a Regulator simply has a separate dial for each time element. Mine was only $200, and there's not much advanced about it. Books on watch collection really don't go into the experience level of the collector-just the character of the watch. I think anyone can be advanced simply by finding out about the watch they're buying rather than grabbing the latest and/or most popular watch. "Advanced" is an attitude as much as the contents of a collection. There are watch collectors I know who have been collecting for 20 years who are not advanced: They're just a Beginner X 20. Take care, Bill 😷

Hi Bill, another video with awesome recommendations! I have bought the exact Longines annual calendar (blue dial leather strap) recently for my nephew as a college graduation gift. It is a very nice watch indeed, and there are not that many annual calendars in the market. The best price I got was $1695, not as good as you had found ($1400). Was what you found a brand new one? Hey Bill! Where would you place a used Seamaster 36MM used with an automatic movement?
@watchartsci
@watchartsci 4 жыл бұрын
The watches listed are not on tiers, but rather what different types of collectors may own. Starting off, most beginners like to get a Sports watch, and the Seamaster 36mm is a sports watch. However, so is my Roger Dubuis Easy Diver, sporting a Geneva Seal by a renowned watchmaker, but it would fit nicely into a beginner's collection as a Sports watch. Take care, Bill
