I’m headed into another busy week at House of Bohn with my amazing team of interior designers and there is one thing that has been at the top of my mind lately. Work/Life Balance. When you run your own business and are working on projects as well, your days, weeks and months become all about work and less about you. If there is one thing I believe is absolutely crucial to becoming successful at anything you do, it’s your health. I’m curious to know what you do to keep a healthy work/life balance? Are you taking any steps to keep your mental and physical health in check? I’m so curious! Let me know in the comments below!

Right now I would say my life is 4/10 balanced. Trying to juggle design school, home life, wedding planning and prep, summer farm work with my parents and everything social in my life has left next to no room for personal care. I need to find a way to prioritize and get my butt in gear to take case of myself more than others. I completely understand keeping your designs/clients/projects confidential, however I was wondering if there is any room in your series for seeing what your junior and intermediate designers do on a daily basis! It would be nice to see kind of the stuff us students might be doing once we complete our studies! Keep up the good work, I love feeling motivated after watching your content; you're such an inspiration!

I think I'm at a 6 for self-care. I work full time (assistant buyer for a manufacturing company) and my husband is disabled (we are in our late 50's) so I've had to take over a lot of what he used to do (long story). I'm so afraid of letting the house get behind that I come home from work, eat supper and swing into taking care of the house, by the time I'm done that, I'm pooched (especially now with the yard work, which used to be his domain) so I'm not fitting in my exercise routine. And although I'm glad I've gotten other things taken care of, I'm not fitting in that piece of self-care so I really need to factor that into the day because I feel so much better when I exercise! Love your videos Karin, I'm always learning something and I so respect your whole attitude and go-get-it way of being! ~Dawne

Hello Karin, I am currently seeking help from a great team of doctors who are helping me with my ongoing mental illnesses. I have taken some BIG steps in the past couple of months to better myself and improve my life balance. Medication has been an incredible help to me and I am glad that I decided to start this self-care journey for myself despite being skeptical about medication and other forms of treatment in the past. Like many others however, I do enjoy the occasional pampering whether it be buying myself something nice like a box of chocolates or doing a sheet mask. Although my life balance has not been great in the past--nor is it ideal now--I feel that I have made significant improvements to my life balance in the past month. I would rate my current life balance at a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. I also hope to move up on this scale as the upcoming months pass. :) I am also excited to complete my AS-T degree in Business Administration in the fall as well as begin my certificate in Interior Design! It is still one of my personal goals to operate some form of my own business involving Interior Design someday. Although the goal seems far away, I am glad that I am near one of its milestones! You are such an inspiration to me, Karin, and I thank you and your team for sharing your passions with me.

Hi Karin! I totally agree with your vision about working too much.. If you don't have a balance in your life, so what are you working for? Work to live, don't live to work. It's good to hear those ideas from you. I love to do what I do, but at the same time I don't want to spend 12 hours a day in front of a computer. I want to have a great design firm, but also I want to be near my family, want to travel, to work out and to be happy. By the way, I'm loving that map on the ceiling! I can't wait to see it finished!

Hi Karin and the amazing HOB team #bohngirls Absolutely love the content and it's so exciting to see 2 videos a week. It is really interesting to see DITL content as you can see the diversity of what can happen. Finding balance and sustaining that balance is crucial towards self-care and is part of achieving success. I am glad that you are taking time to focus on your health and personal time. I like that you included the aspect career/goal/dream development as part of finding that balance. Everything is related to each other and it's finding out what connects or influences what in our lives and how can we ensure we have it all in balance to be on our A-Game. Fabulous! Have a great week! :-)

Hey Karin! I took the plunge a couple weeks ago and now I am working for myself. I am slammed with work, but I have a plan to keep self care in the mix. A massage and pedicure once a month. Working out 3-4x per week is so important for me too. And I am now making time to have lunch with a friend every week. LOVE seeing the day in the life videos! I would love to see your entire design process or your client process. LOVE all you and the House of Bohn team do!!

Back to you, Karin, because this is a receiving and giving thing I want to deliver, as well, by answering one of you question on that scale mine is on 4, the “why?” though is a long long story, dear...

the most life changing thing for me to self care and de stress after work is magnesium salt baths with lavender and peppermint oils. I run a bath and put a generous amount of salts in half a cup or less or more depending on how you feel, then a couple of drops of essentials oil. I pare this with a calming tea, good book or movie to watch in the bath, it takes a while to get comfortable and adjust in the moment, yet once you do its amazing and you feel so rejuvenated. don't forget to turn off the lights and light some candles!

Hi Karin, So nice to watch your videos. I stumbled upon your channel, I watched 6 videos and I'm hooked! I have just subscribed to your channel as well even though I am not in the design industry. I do appreciate you and your contents as well as your attitude towards people that shows on all your vlogs :) I like that you keep it short as well. Karin, my best tip on how to create balance is first to allow yourself to think that it is totally OK to have balance and to say 'no' to things/ people that you normally would say yes to. As you know, Gary V's and Tim Ferris' of this world teach us on how to say yes to everything and then figure it out later? Honestly saying yes to yourself first and figuring out how to give that attention to yourself with the same intensity as you pay attention to your projects and to your clients is how to start to play this balancing act girl. I've done a lot or research and from my experiences and those of my clients I know the price that you may pay if you don't sort out self-compassion time. Message me if you would like to know more. I'm always happy to chat. The second tip I would give is to create systems for everything that you normally do. There are elements of your day that are repetitive and those are the elements that you should systematize. It is not only good for gaining more time but also it is to create space for you to invest that time in getting physical with yourself or do some creative brain work. We as humans are the only species in the world that have developed that part of the brain that is responsible for creativity, compassion and logical thinking, but we also have the reptile part of the brain that is solely responsible for keeping us safe. When it switches on it usually 'shuts down' the creative, compassionate, logical part of the brain and it narrows down our abilities to the very basic ones. That part of the brain kicks in when we are in danger. It is very important part of the brain but it is designed to be switched on only for a very short split second of the time. The same fight and flight response switches on when we are under prolonged period of stress. And as a result we start feeling tired, less focused, aggregated, sad/ depressed. Our ability to think straight and to use the creative part of brain is very limited. So if I was to summaries, as business owner and entrepreneur you must wear all different hats. It is not a 'nice to have' but it is a 'must' . And for this you MUST be logical, empathetic and creative to make right decisions and to move forward with our goals. 1. systems 2. self-compassion 3. getting physical with yourself Lots of love from London, UK. x Karo PS. let me know if it was useful at all please.

At the moment, I just found a job and am starting summer classes in a month. Therefore, I dont have a good estimate on how balanced my life is because of my long break off of both. My goal in life tho is to do good in my job and continue developing in it while also focusing and caring about myself. During this time, I might also have kids, and caring for myself and having low stress I think is key since most mothers dont do that. This is an ideal life for me. It takes a lot of planning and hardwork to start and even continue carrying for yourself, but maybe one day I'll achieve it. Even for a day. 🤞 P.s. morning routine in the new house would be so much fun to watch 😄

It can get hard though because thoughts of what needs to get done still cross my mind! Also, I really like to take a warm bath and play relaxing music! There are different ways to take care of ourselves. For me, what I do to take care of me is what makes me feel god and happy and be motivated again. It is simple, it’s all about pampering myself. I am very self conscious about my face, I don’t like when people stare at me because that makes me think that they are looking at all the mess going on on my face. When I do a scrub, a face mask, I feel my skin fresh and new even though breakouts are still here but by doing these kind of things it makes me gaign a little confident to get out and do what I have to do. But, In a scale of 10, I would put myself a 6. I have a very imbalance life, relationship with friends, my diet, my career, my life. It’s a mess and I don’t know how to get out of this, how to get out of my comfort zone to finally live my life.. Sharone from Mauritius 🇲🇺 Love you😘

It is hard to find balance as an entrepreneur especially in the start-up period. We become so entangle with our business that it is hard to fit anything else such as our kids, partner, parents, friends... Even though we know that balance is a crucial part of managing our business and life, it is so easy to find excuse to let our business taking over most of the other aspects of our lives.

I’ve said this before, sorry to be boring🙄I think it’s more my culture that makes me consider age. I’m 36 and I am definitely in transition in my life. I am applying for new roles in my field as an assistant. I tend to look after CEO’s and managing directors, who are often men. One of my things is to study how they lead. I definitely feel I will have my own business one day. I am not sure what in, be it fashion or whatever but I am trying to explore avenues. As I have been on my own ie no partner etc for most of my life, I have made it a thing to practice self care. I have been dressing up and going on dates on my own all around the world. I love to travel, which I do usually alone. I love to read, to go to the cinema, set up dinner dates with friends but by myself also. Many of these things I deliberately do by myself. Generally I know that some things I do are considered taboo to do by yourself and I simply like to challenge and dispel myths and to challenge myself. I once went clubbing by myself in Abu Dhabi. It sounds like a ‘so what’ thing but I have found that concept a little weird, going clubbing by yourself. However I had the best time. As soon as I went to the club a guy saw me and we instantly started dancing. It wasn’t sleazy he didn’t come on to me or anything it was just a great night. I hate the gym with a vengeance. Being older definitely proves that one has to work harder however it’s just non negotiable not to go. So I factor the gym in 3/4 times a week. I’m a perpetual thinker which can be exhausting. Going to the gym defo relieves that trait in me. Mind power I need more of that for sure. Food is also LIFE for me, I have to work to eat healthily but it also is a must. Has to go hand in hand with all the work I’m putting in at the gym. Cleaning I love to do as there is a beginning middle and end, love to see the results. I really enjoy shopping, which I have limited to the discipline of window shopping as I’m saving lol. I also avoid notifications unless it’s important for my calendar aka what I need to do for the day. I noted that notifications on apps etc are ways of distraction, therefore All notifications are off! Praying for me is huge! I was up at around 04:30 this morning in London, England. It’s now nearly 05:30 and I’m watching you for inspo. 6.5/10

for me balance on 10 ; ... probably 3 (for personnal life) and 7 (for work) , my work is more important because more exciting compared my personnal life who is really empthy now , cause first i live in coutry middle of mountains (so not too much things to do here) and also i don't want a classic life with kids and familly blabla bla , and my friends also have all kids now also (its not something bad of course i'm happy to see them happy) so 80% of my time is just in my work .

I love your channel. I wanted to recommend a channel that also does interior design that I think you would really enjoy. Studio Mcgee. Check it out when u get a moment. Their work is stunning and they also have a fantastic media crew that reminds me a lot of yours.

Yesss, definitely a morning routine video. That would be great. As a fellow entrepreneur I understand the hustle and the on-the-go from sun up to sundown. But I wouldn’t change a thing. I do motivational speaking, creative content, digital marketing, & I’m an investor. Please check out my Instagram page as I post a ton of motivational info & business info at @kareasaboyd thanks so much for being incredibly informative. You make me want to hire you next year when I purchase my new home in Seattle Wa .
