In the past we've explored British supermarkets, but today we're searching for British foods in American grocery stores. We’ll take you around to a few stores, see what we can find, and see how the variety and prices compare. We found a really cool store full of seasonal British goods like Easter eggs, so you'll want to stick around to the end to see everything we found and tried.

Mint sauce is traditionally meant to be served with a lamb roast dinner but I love it drizzled all over any sort of roast dinner 🤤

Mint sauce - with Lamb. Salad cream - on salads, in sandwiches and I personally love it on boiled potatoes or mixed through mashed potatoes.

The prices for the British goods here in the Chicsgo area are pretty much the same. sometimes, World Market has some items for a little less. I can hardly wait for you to go back to the UK !🎉 I would love to see you go to some of the more remote places like Shetland or Ise of Man if possible with doggie 🐕

As someone said Mint with lamb, salad cream is a more acidic version of mayo I much prefer the sharpness I find mayo too much like cream not for me xx Brandon pickle in a sandwich with ham or cheese lovely xx Heinz beans are not good anymore much prefer supermarket own brands and they are way cheaper xx

A Brit here, yeah, the Soreen malt loaf is usually squishy and dense. Makes for a lovely "elevenses" mid morning snack 😊

Hello. Soreen should really be toasted & dripping in butter. There are a few different flavours of Soreen too like apple & a banana one amongst others.

Wow! Nearly £5 for a packet of biscuits! God, I'd be bankrupt if we paid that! But our prices keep going up so maybe it won't be too long before we do...🙁

As a lucky American to have the honor of living in Cambridge, grocery shopping was interesting. We used Tesco, Sainsburys and the coop. They were all local. We bussed it one day to supertesco was closest to Walmart than the others. I was floored when I saw that the checkers were sitting. I agree it can't be that hard to do,why can't they do it in the u.s... very interesting to say the least. Ummm I saw the mcvitties digestive tasty stuff.

I use the Co-op when desperate as it's only down the road but I find their prices are extortionate. I do have a Co-op loyalty card which gives a bit of discount on their own brand things. Don't know if you've ever tried them but having been sadly disappointed by all other pies from Tesco, Sainsbury etc. I chanced a Co-op Chicken and ham pie when it was on special offer and was surprised how good it was. Have since had the steak one and just as good. Pastry's lovely and there's actually a good amount of meat in them unlike all the others including Pukka Pies.

The way you described the Soreen sounds just like it is here in the UK. It is chewy, malty and sweet with a stickiness to it so it sticks to your teeth.

Make sure to follow really carefully the procedure for getting a british pet health certificate before taking Dogo to the UK - I don't think the UK accepts US Pet health passports and if any of the documents are filled out incorrectly, the pet can end up in quarantine for up to 4 months.

I once went to New York and of course took a small jar of Marmite with me. When I got it out to put it on my morning toast the waitress told me her grandmother who had come from Hong Kong loved it but could not get it (this was over 20 years ago). I of course gifted the Marmite to her and did without for the rest of my trip. For the rest of my stay I got the best service possible from my new best friend.

Tbh our condiments go with whatever you want them to go with. I love salad cream with salad, chicken and pasta.. it kind of has a honey mustard vibe. As for mint sauce it goes well with lamb roast, chicken roast, peas, boiled new potatoes! Sauce up anything you like with whatever you like!!! If I was to move to a new country, I’d have to bring sage & onion Paxo stuffing mix & Bisto gravy! 😅

The one thing I would miss living outside the UK is crumbly white cheese. Cheshire, Lancashire, Caerphilly, Wensleydale, etc.

Brit here too and usually butter bread for any sandwich except a Bacon or Sausage one as I like the bread to soak up the fat.

When I was in the hospital in Canada the kitchen didn’t butter the bread in sandwiches needless to say the sandwiches were gross.

I really enjoyed this video. I am from the UK and I recommend trying a cheese and onion crisp and salad cream sandwich. An effective restorative after returning home from the pub.

Hi guys, someone else may have already commented on this…Violet Crumble is Australian (as you mentioned), the other similar chocolate bar you were talking about which they have in the UK is the Crunchie Bar, which you filmed in the UK Corner Store 😊 - both are chocolate coated honeycomb which I don’t think is common in the US when I’ve been there. Also, would love to see you guys do a vlog on the Aussie Bakery place as an Aussie myself would love to see it and should try the sausage rolls! I know you’re in the UK again now and you’ve done Gregg’s but ours are slightly differ as made with beef not pork usually in Aus. Great video, I’m currently in the UK so found it super interesting with the comparisons too. Thanks!

I'm from the UK, but I lived in Italy for a while. It's such a cliché, but the one thing I had to have from home was teabags. Other tea just isn't the same. I also missed bacon - proper thick cut smoked back bacon. But I just had to do without.

Yes Yorkshire Tea. On trains going to the North on Yorkshire Day you get a free sachet of Yorkshire Tea.

But Lancashire tea is very good. I don't know how widely available it is, but here in Cheshire (or what I still insist is Cheshire, whatever the government says) it certainly is. If there were a Cheshire tea, I'd drink that, but there isn't, so we stick to Lancashire tea.

When coming to the UK again, try finding the discount shops such as home bargains, jack Fulton's, herons, bargain madness etc. If you wish to buy a Gaul of pot noodles, chocolate bars, snacks etc at prices way under what you will pay in places like Tesco etc then I would recommend searching out these places. For example chicolate hobnobs are 69p in home bargains . Most chocolate bars are between half and 2 thirds the price of supermarket prices, which goes for must products. Pot noodles are also about 69p on average in these places I would recommend you buy yourself a huge amount of stuff, and pay postage to send it to yourself back home, and you can then pick up from your local post office when you return home. Even with postage you would be saving a lot of money on UK supermarket prices. You will be saving even more money on the US UK food prices!

I experienced this back in the 90s, I was a serviceman's wife and we shopped at the Naafi when we lived overseas - the Naafi is excellent but at the time there were a few things we couldn't buy... from memory they were British Bread, Tea Bags, clotted cream and cheddar cheese. We used to give our families a shopping list of things to bring over when they visit. Of course we loved seeing our families, but we also couldn't wait to get our hands on the treats from home.

Same here for many years! I suppose the bread was British in one way as Naafi always made its own, certainly still in the mid to late 80s. Prior to that, it had its own industrial scale bakery in Krefeld but then withdrew to the UK (Wiltshire I believe) and distributed it to all European NAAFIs. I'm trying to recall one thing we always asked visitors to bring, but can't bring anything to mind. However it was incredibly good to be able to buy things like Atora suet right off the shelf wherever you were in the world. And I think the brand of bread in Hong Kong was from the local Garden Bakery?

Same here my dad was in the army so I was born into the life of moving every couple of years or so. I miss those days of shopping in the Naafi and when aboard you could just live entirely on the base, with everything provided for entertainment or you could venture outside if you like.

In U.K. We normally have mint sauce with lamb Apple sauce with pork horseradish sauce goes with beef Salad cream normally goes with a salad ( lettuce tomato cucumber ect)

My mother loved salad cream but I was well into my teens before I’d even heard of mayonnaise.. then I read somewhere that salad cream is actually a fake substitute for mayo, created during the war when sourcing eggs was a big problem. War ended, but a lot of Brits had developed a taste for salad cream, and so it’s still a thing. But pretty much anything you’d think of putting Mayo into or onto you can use salad cream.

It was interesting seeing the products in Publix. The packaging had weights in ounces with metric in brackets after, which indicates it was never made for sale in the UK. My guess is that these are products specifically made for export to the US to comply with different labelling regulations, but it could also mean that the recipes themselves are different from what we would get in the UK.

Salad cream is good pretty much everywhere you'd use mayo. I like it with boiled eggs in a sandwich. Mint sauce - with roast lamb. I'd miss Henderson's relish, cunninghams picallili, cadbury's and galaxy chocolate, and the cheeses such as Wensleydale, white cheshire, red leicester. Soreen is supposed to be the consistency you described.

If you're going back to the UK and love Cadbury, then visit the Cadbury World factory in Birmingham. Most production is elsewhere but they do make some chocolate there (plus lots of tastings around the tour!)

I've just returned from Tesco. They had the same Mini Eggs Easter egg for £3. Or the smallest Mini Egg Easter egg for £1. It was also available with a mug for £5.

I paid £3 in Tesco today for the Mini eggs Easter egg you paid $12.99 for. Yes, in the UK we spread a thin layer of butter on the bread in a sandwich. The salad cream can also be spread in a thin layer on top of the butter in your sandwich along with the fillings. ( Meats, Salad & eggs ) a substitute for mayonnaise.

I would recommend Derbyshire and the Peak District to you. It is one of our National Parks and contains some wonderful scenery. Don't miss the Crooked Spire in my home town of Chesterfield, the inland seaside resort of Matlock Bath, Chatsworth House and park and also Bakewell where you can try a Bakewell Pudding!

I'd agree about the Peak District. The Blue John mines are very good, among other places. I'm just across the border is what I still consider Cheshire. Nearby, is Lyme Park, which is definitely worth a visit. It features in the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, as the exterior of Pemberley. There are other old houses in Cheshire too; Tatton Park, Dunham Massey, Little Moreton Hall and several others. A more recent option is Jodrell Bank radio telescope. Well worth a look if you have any interest in astronomy. It's a local landmark; visible from many miles away.

Another thumbs up for the Peak District! Nice traditionally English vibes and very friendly. Also the exact opposite of the lake district; more workaday people and you're surrounded by local people who live and work there as opposed to the retired judges and southern Nimbys that tend to populate places in the lakes. Also recommend the Cotswolds, very friendly spot. Had one of my best holidays stopping in Chadlington a few years ago.

as someone from Stoke on Trent, The Peak District is one of the best places in the UK, i think i've spent more leisure time there than anywhere else, walking, biking and wild camping around the roaches and surrounding area

Chocolate HobNobs are under £2 in the UK, not £3 like apple sauce with pork, mint sauce (often mixed with malt vinegar) goes over roast lamb.

The violet crumble is the equivalent to the UK’s crunchie. I’m a Brit living here in the US and I miss all the Gregg’s foods, but the one product I miss is their walker flavor crisps. Also Campbells pork and beans is the closet thing to Heinz I buy here without breaking the bank lol

Iceland started selling frozen Greggs pasties a while back. If you cook them right, they can taste almost the same as from the shop. I think they do Chicken Bake, Steak Bake and Sausage, Bean and Cheese Bakes.

Amazing your coming back to the UK again. Depending on your schedule, I’d recommend coming to Rochester in Kent. Particularly for either Dickens festival (usually around June) or Sweeps festival which is between 30th April to 2nd May this year. It’s a celebration of Morris dancing but there’s lots of other things on too 😊

Marmite is the 1 thing I couldn't live without. Salad cream, I love it on sandwiches. Mint sauce goes well with roast lamb 😋 Soreen under the grill makes it go crispy around the edges mmm.

As a Brit I can confirm that we almost always have butter in sandwiches when you buy them from a shop or cafe. One exception might be the cafe where you may get away with asking for no butter when ordering, but otherwise they pretty much always come with butter as default 😅 (I personally don't have butter, but that's just because I'm not a butter-fan anway 😂)

I've never seen Bachelor's beans before, I've bought their peas though. I would like Warburton's bread if I was travelling. You're correct, salad cream is poured sparingly over salad, mint sauce is served with lamb on a roast dinner although my husband eats with any roast meat.

Soreen does have a unique sticky consistency and in quite popular in the Manchester area, where is originated 100+ years ago. Fun Fact: Tayto invented the first flavoured crisp production process and the first seasoned crisps produced were Cheese & Onion!!! But it is great to see that there was Rice Pudding, Lemon Curd and a full range of Barry's Tea. Salad Cream was originally for salad, but these days it is mostly used in sandwiches. At one point Heinz planned to remane it Sandwich Cream but realized the error of their ways. Eventhough most kids will have made a sandwich at some point with Salad Cream as the only ingredient.

I remember when you got Smith's Crisps in a bag with a little blue twist containing the salt to sprinkle on them. I believe they made a come-back some years ago as a sort of gimmick but with the huge choice of ready salted and flavoured crips nowadays I don't think the novelty value lasted long.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who loves parma violets!! (they're not super well liked over here in the UK, and are often considered an "old person's sweet"). Also, if you can make it to Birmingham on your next UK visit, that's a fairly central location for most people to get to if you were doing a meet up.

I find Malt Loaf is pretty similar to Marmite in that you either hate it or love it. I'm not a fan either haha. The consistency is how you describe in the video. Recommendations for a place to visit would deffo be Derbyshire - especially Matlock and Matlock Bath. They're full of history, super quirky and there's a Harry Potter themed shop in Matlock called Punny Dukes which is fab.

Salad cream with boiled eggs and salad. It's a thick dressing. Can also be used as a dip for celery sticks or spring onions. Branston pickle, ham sandwiches, cheese sandwiches. Mint sauce with roast lamb, not too much on the side of you plate, just a little.

@@TheMagicGeekdom A quick word of warning about bringing your pet dog to the UK. The UK has very strict stipulations about bringing in pets as we do not have rabies in the UK. Your dog must have a microchip, also must have a recent rabies vaccine, then a blood test before arrival. Your dog must also have tapeworm treatment within 5 days before arriving in the UK. You may already be aware of this but if not please check it out as your dog could face a long period in quarantine.

Yeah the soreen malt loaf is very dense and squishy even fresh, its often sold in a multipack of snack bars sizes and I think comes in different flavours as well, sometimes used like energy bars for hikers. You'll need to keep your eyes open when you are in the UK, as there are also parma-violet creams but they are hard to find, its a parma-violet fondant with a chocolate shell around it, sold in a box. They also do violet creams, in Ross's in Edinburgh.

Mint sauce with lamb, also salad cream is made pretty much the same way as mayonnaise, difference being no raw eggs, it's made with hard boiled egg yolks, and yes we'd have it on salad, maybe as a cousin did a salad cream sandwich 😁 but myself being a chef for 40-ish years we eat some strange combinations, I'd eat chips with salad cream, we also have a sandwich spread

You might already know this but until the 1990's every single village in England had a few corner shops which were exactly like this one. They have pretty much died out apart from in rural areas now but they were were everyone's mum sent them to get sweets or something she had forgotten to get.

I remember going to the corner shop when I was a kid to get my Gran's ciggies. 10 Black Cat ... lol. We still have what we describe as "corner shops" even though they're not on a corner. Usually run by Asian families who stay open all hours so probably more acurately described as convenience stores. I think most places have them situated away from the main town area as they are very handy when you don't want to get the car out for a pint of milk, etc.

Good video and thank you for liking and trying British food. I'm from the UK and the one thing I couldn't do without is a bar of Cadburys Dairy Milk Chocolate. There is literally nothing else in the world as nice ( including Belgian chocolate). Dont get me wrong there are much higher qualities of chocolate available but there is just something magical about Cadburys Diary milk chocolate.

Velvet crumble is equivalent to the British crunchie. Mint sauce is usually served with lamb, and Branston pickle is usually put in sandwiches with ham or cheese. Love this video

Mint sauce traditionally is with roast lamb. Delicious! Soreen is that consistency - quite claggy in the mouth. Tayto is a famous Irish crisp I believe. Double decker is the best chocolate bar from Cadbury but I’m biased haha

Mince sauces for roast lamb, but we generally put it on any roast dinner, vegetables. Salad cream is specifically for salads as a dressing.

The uk definitely has its own regional variations of shops too. For example up north we have a lot off Mcolls which is owned by Morrisons and we also have a few Londis which are all owned by Tesco :)

Salad Cream is effectively mayonnaise with a slightly different taste, so sandwiches, salad accompaniment. Branston Pickle goes on cheddar cheese in a sandwich. Mint Sauce goes on Roast Lamb, like Cranberry Jelly goes on Roast Turkey and Apple Sauce goes on Roast Chicken.

Salad cream is eaten with tuna fish or even better with tinned salmon. It’s something you dip a sandwich into with salad on the side. Branston pickle is eaten with cheese on a ploughman’s lunch which is a large salad with thick soft buttered bread.

I lived in Thailand between 2001 and 2003 - I begged my parents to bring as many 'decent' tea bags as they could when they visited me as at the time I could only get Liptons even in Bangkok - check how many Brits recommend those or even know they make tea bags - how much more British could I be - the other was baked beans which I found in a store that imported them from Japan for something like the ones familiar to us Brits - I paid around 5 times the UK price at the time.

Mint sauce = lamb Sunday roast. Apple sauce = pork Sunday dinner. Salad cream = salads OR can put on sandwiches that have salad on. Branston = cold meat, cold meat sandwiches, salad with cold meat on or on cheese.

Yes yes yes! Northerner here and I'm a definate convert to oatcakes! Common around Derby and Stoke. There's Derbyshire oatcakes and Staffordshire oatcakes...one is larger than the other. I make them at home as they're pretty easy to make and you can have pretty much any filling in them...sausages, bacon, chicken, strawberries. Probably THE most versatile food EVER!

I’m glad you visited a Publix as in my view they are the best Supermarket chain in the world. They have amazing choice, good quality, Deli counters to die for and always friendly helpful staff that like to have a laugh with you. I definitely miss them when in the US away from Florida & Georgia. Oh and they actually have cheese, something that’s not that easy to find in some other US supermarkets. I’m English living in England, when I go to other countries I buy the food of that country and give “The English Shop” a wide berth. Lastly try skipping Heinz Baked Beans and try Branston - you won’t switch back.

I absolutely loved this video...being a brit in New York...I'm always looking for goodies from home....we have a great store The Hamlet NY, in Mount Kisco...and in Greenwich Village NYC there is Tea and Sympathy and also Myers of Keswick. I've lived in Austria for 30 years, but I always need my bisto gravy granules, oxo cubes, sage and onion stuffing, allspice (to make Welshcakes), malt vinegar, worcester sauce and my yorkshire tea (or breakfast tea). Some things you can buy in Austria now, but most I buy from a fantastic online site - the British corner shop!! I can get amazing orders - especially for x-mas. I need my mince pies and x-mas pudding!!

Awesome video. You've chose a good way to travel to the uK.. but if your hitting London 1st.. that will be dearer than smaller towns!! There are other outlets in the UK far less costly than Tesco also. Salad Cream designed to be a side sauce for yes you guessed it... salad.. but once you get the taste for it you look for any excuse to use it.. it's more than nice on fries!! I'll think you'll love it here.. and you'll soon find the best places to shop. x

Great video - very interesting seeing what British products they have in the US. I am Canadian and have been to the UK many times and love it there. We have quite a few places that sell British products but the prices are high - I can’t bring myself to pay that much as I know what it costs in the UK. Sometimes I do treat myself to Branston Pickle, Wensleydale Cheese, PG Tips Tea and Galaxy Minstrels! Btw, we don’t put butter on a sandwich either - mayo or mustard or both.

Branston pickle in chunky cheddar cheese sandwiches Salad cream yes on salad but some people like it on cheese on toast or with mashed hard boiled eggs mashed together and in a sandwich with cress Mint sauce we put with roast lamb dinner on the side of the plate . Apple sauce goes with roast pork dinner. Marmite is lovely on thick very hot buttered toast but spread really thinly.

Mint sauce goes with lamb. Branston Pickle goes with cheese, be it together or you can make a cheese & pickle sandwich, hard sliced cheese. But can be done with soft cheese/onion type sandwich filling. Salad cream is well, you put it on salads, some may use it as a covering over chips (fries), something to dip in, breadsticks and if you want to use it as a starter for some dip by adding something else to it. Salad cream can also be used with boiled eggs if you want a salad cream egg mayo type sandwich filling but you use salad cream than mayo.

4:00 mint sauce is traditionally served with lamb. As you know, a Sunday Roast or Sunday Lunch is a big thing in the UK. Depending on what meat you use, you would use different condiments. If you're eating lamb, you would have mint sauce; if you're eating beef, you would have mustard or horseradish; if you're eating pork, you would have apple sauce; and if you're having chicken or turkey, you would have cranberry sauce.

You have mint sauce or mint jelly with roast lamb. Branston pickle goes well with cold meats and cheese. A cheese and pickle sandwich is delicious. Salad cream as you so rightly say is to drizzle on salad, it's also good to mix with chopped hard boiled egg instead of mayonnaise.
