FILIPINO SWORDS, CALLED BOLO OR SUNDANG, COME IN MANY FORMS.
And I went on a quest to find one in Cotabato City's "Super" Market.
The craftsmanship is on full display here - even a sublime kris costing 15,000 pesos or $300!
From Barira to Upi, two very different highland towns - Upi is famous for its tri-people culture - the indigenous Teduray/Tiruray, the Moros, and the settlers; and its cool mountain climate is home to wonders like the Ranao Pilayan Falls.
Back on the lowland plains and the regional centre of Cotabato City, I wanted to immerse further - and there is no better way than in their market, which they call "Super". And Super it was, with a huge selection of handicrafts in one section - local swords (bolos), and even some attached to wooden boats and birds!
I am really coming to appreciate the soul of this region more and more with every visit.

You've done it again, kumander. Starting us with lush, green mountain roads, giving us a taste of history with the story of the two brothers, then showing us the superb craftsmanship of these blades. Truly awesome vlog. I did laugh a little when you said the market has rows of things you may or may not want to buy. 😂

Those were some beautiful bolos that you were looking at. Really nice carving on those more elaborate and decorative ones, too. Looks like you could lose yourself in the Cotabato market while enjoying all the wonderful things that were there for sale. I think that one ate took a liking to you. Seemed like she was following you to give you Maguindanaoan lessons. Who knows? Maybe she has a daughter she was looking to introduce you to.😂

Am from northeastern Luzon but frequented Mindanao in the 80s and loved it. The people there Tausog, Maranao, Belaan, Bagobo, etc. are very nice people. They are Pilipino like the indiginous people in the north. We are all Pilipinos, brown malay race mixed with other race throughout history. All descendant of Lapu lapu and Diego Silang, a maharlikan race.

Love this vlog so much! Thank you for featuring Cotabato City. Really would like to go there someday. Didn’t know that it gets cold down there in Cotabato area. And I’m impressed that you managed to get down to the falls in those slippers! 😳😂 The food in the south looks delicious. Mama Ping’s noodles look good. Take care and God bless. 🥰

Yum, bugs! Powerful waterfall, makes it's own wind storm! What a huge market--if you can't find what you need there, you probably don't need it... except perhaps, a parking spot. 😅 Mama Ping's food looks great. Sure beats bugs! What a beautiful area. Good to see you're surviving the deluge of rain and flooding. Stay safe.

We remember Martin and Gracie Burnham; Held hostage for 376 days by an Islamic terrorist group in the Philippines, Gracia Burnham doesn't tire of recounting the time she and her husband spent in the Mindanao jungle with their kidnappers. It was the last year of her husband's life, as he perished from three gunshot wounds to his chest. We would all like to believe the Islamic people of this region have turned from war to peace, but the military presence reveals the truth. Many would like to see peace and progress, but hidden away in the deep jungles remain dark hearts, patiently waiting....... I thank you Kumander, for showing the beauty of this region and its culture. KZfaq videos are still the only safe way for westerners to visit.

Im sorry if this may seem like a political comment but I would never really accept for Mindanao to be not part of the Philippines, we may not know much of most of them but they are Filipinos with their own unique culture and they are part of what the Philippines is.
