FILIPINO SWORDS, CALLED BOLO OR SUNDANG, COME IN MANY FORMS.
And I went on a quest to find one in Cotabato City's "Super" Market.
The craftsmanship is on full display here - even a sublime kris costing 15,000 pesos or $300!
From Barira to Upi, two very different highland towns - Upi is famous for its tri-people culture - the indigenous Teduray/Tiruray, the Moros, and the settlers; and its cool mountain climate is home to wonders like the Ranao Pilayan Falls.
Back on the lowland plains and the regional centre of Cotabato City, I wanted to immerse further - and there is no better way than in their market, which they call "Super". And Super it was, with a huge selection of handicrafts in one section - local swords (bolos), and even some attached to wooden boats and birds!
I am really coming to appreciate the soul of this region more and more with every visit.
