Finding Out How Much Firewood is in a Tree

In the last video we started figuring out how much firewood was in this one tree. In this video we actually find out how many cords of firewood was in the tree. I am comparing how much this tree would be worth selling the logs to a sawmill. Versus how much I will get out of it in firewood. Versus how much I would get out of milling it into lumber and timbers on my Woodmizer LT15 sawmill. And we get to see some animals that I got on my trail camera. After we watched a fire helicopter fly over.

Your videography gets better and better. You are still thinking about it and not stuck in a rut. The smoke is gone today so this video has inspired me to go split. I think I thank you for this inspiration?

Thanks, it sometimes takes some thinking to stay out of the rut. Especially when doing similar things all the time. Good that your smoke is finally gone. Sounds like there’s going to be some improvement for the next few days.

Those critters looked hungry. If we don't see you again, we'll know why. Nah, you would probably be too tough for them to want to eat. Another good video. Oh yah, that sure was a big dragon fly that flew over. Thanks for taking us all out into the woods with you. Also, I don't blame you for heading over to the coast. This smoke is getting old. Medford.

Did you recover your work-shirt trapped in the face of the trailer? (4:35 mark) So, how much wood would Wilson split, when a Wilson would split wood...? Love the Trail cam pics -- that little Cinnamon bear, (Ursus Americanus Cinnamomum) was a great catch. Hurrah for wildlife! Cheers from a (drizzly/damp) Linn County
@WilsonForestLands

That shirt is more of a rag/license plate cover. I did recover it. There was supposed to be more wildlife footage on that video. A hairy woodpecker going after the bugs in the bark that came off the wood I was splitting. It was only about 8 feet away from me. I shot the video but somehow the camera forgot to turn on. Drizzly/damp sounds a whole lot better than smoky.

@bruceking5173
@bruceking5173 9 ай бұрын
your time is worth something. if you figured your time at $16/hour, which is an example of what you might pay someone else to do the work, you could come up with a better breakdown of what your net profit is for marketed logs, your own sawmill logs and firewood. i've been wresting with this for 100 acres of alder ive got, that would market at $450/m but to get that $450 I'd have to give 40% to 60% of that to the logging company and the trucking company, so my net would be somewhere around $200/m Green alder firewood is $250 a cord or more, but I think that I'd net more that way even hiring out the labor to run it through a firewood processor and deliver it. I guess I should cut down a few and calculate the amount of wood and run the numbers again as you do here. Thanks for the food for thought.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 9 ай бұрын
Yeah adding in the labor and other factors would be interesting and a good idea. In my case, firewood is a clear winner because setting up to temporarily be in the firewood business is as simple as showing up with my dump trailer and splitter. Bringing in equipment, repairing roads to get a log truck in here for this small blow down I am dealing with would bring profit close to zero. Hauling my sawmill in from out of the area and setting up a temporary lumber business in this area for the few weeks I will be here takes away from the practicality of milling lumber here. Instead of figuring out the numbers of the labor and everything, one just pops out as being practical and the others just aren’t. But if we wanted to we could have all kinds of fun with all kinds of numbers. Thanks, good comment.

I can never remember if ive commented this on one of your videos before, so excuse me if this is a repeat comment. But a safe bet on loose wood equaling a cord is 180 cu/ft 10'x4.5'x4'. Its defined as split wood bucked at 12-16" thrown loosely together.
@WilsonForestLands
@WilsonForestLands 9 ай бұрын
I have had a few people comment that it is 180. I did a video about a year ago comparing tightly stacked to loosely thrown. It came out in the 180 to 190 range. On my trailer I stack the back row. The trailer is also a little less than 180 cf. So I heap it and arrange the pieces on top somewhat orderly so they don’t fall out. So some of it ends up being more tight then loosely thrown.
