Hey, good vid man - really clear cut. I've moved on to a 30" axle to axle from 33.5. I'm now having trouble with touching my nose to the string. I've moved my anchor and started using a thumb release. I'm sure I'll get it, but man the draw length - I'm bouncing between 29.5 and 30 trying to get it where I don't have to bend so far to get my nose on the string. Part of the fun I guess.

I realize you came out with this video 5 years ago and it may be a long gone thought, but another great idea to solidify your anchor point is taking a little knot of serving string and tying it to the string where it touches somewhere on your face (ie. tip of nose, corner of mouth like a kisser button, etc) gives a 3rd anchor point and guarantees you will have the exact same anchor point every time. Good muscle memory activity for beginners. I've been shooting for 20 years and I still have it on my bow. I would Rather feel redundant than accidentally mess up on a hunting trip out of excitement and adrenaline!!! Great informative video!

Complicated and takes time.. Peep position, draw length, anchor points, some bows sight position. I ended up anchoring in the exact same spot as you to get the string on the tip of my nose without tipping my head. If you close your eyes, draw, anchor your draw hand, touch the string with your nose without any contortions, open your eyes and your peep and sight housing are right on, you got it.

About to start shooting again after years of being away, but switching to a compound Diamond SB1 instead of my old Olympic Style Hoyt setup I used to shoot exclusively. The reason is I didn't have $2000 to give Hoyt, as much as I love them. I don't ever recall having to mess with draw length with my old Hoyt takedown Medalist, of course you were stuck with that riser and those limbs, everything else was optional on the riser, rests, stabilizers, etc. I'm assuming this was because those risers and limbs were pre-selected for youth archers or something? My old club always had people who knew how to adjust these things and do string work, though they didn't have a full shop on site, which was a bit odd--they'd set your nocking points, whatever, so I never worried about all that. I was even trained in how to repair and re-fletch arrows, which was really cool! Just need a brace or table clamp and some nocking and fletching cement. This was before carbon and screw-in points came along. Now of course I'm faced with a bow that can adjust draw weight and length any way you like. I found I didn't even have the 1/4" allen key (for some ridiculous reason, wasn't on my otherwise fully-loaded allen key set!) you need for adjusting draw weight, though I see how easy it is to do. It would have been better, however, if Diamond had been able to put the incremental values on the limbs so you can see the precise draw weight you are adjusting to. I like precision. Adjusting Draw length is a bit trickier, you have to take down and loosen the cams or whatever to do that. I'm taking the whole thing to the range and getting them to set it all up, without a doubt. Anyway, this video was enormously helpful. I always was trained to use the clicker release, a kisser button to anchor every single time, and a plunger button thing on the rest, along with a steel wire arrow drop off rest. But again, this was recurve competition shooting. I never used a peep sight though I knew what one was, just never needed one, given I used the old CheckIT target sight! Just adjust and shoot. Anyway, thanks and I'm looking forward to being on the line again!

does the length of a release aid have an effect? should i aim to have the release only come out to the tip of my finger? for me personally, i feel like i loose strength on my draw when i use a wrist mounted release vs just drawing the same weight with my fingers. i haven't found any videos talking about how a release aid could make drawing a bow harder, is that something that actually happens, or am i only experiencing that because im new to archery?
@roythearcher
@roythearcher 5 жыл бұрын
YES! The differences in the lengths of release aid do make a difference in your draw length as you will either be drawing the bow further or less far depending on the type and size of the trigger you use. Having a release that has a longer length means that you will have to draw a little further to get the string to the stops and you may find that this is awkward and uncomfortable to do regularly. You may have to adjust your bow's draw stops a little to suit the kind of release you want to use. You will know when its right as it will feel right and, more importantly, be repeatable!

I'm trying to get my son into bow before moving into rifle (bolt action), currently he is 10, 11 by summer and my question is, should we go into a bow packaged for teens or something cheap and change as he grows? For instance, I believe he could pull 30+ lbs as well being tall for his age, as he grows, he'll be on the top chart for age and could work up poundage? No I don't own one myself nor shot one, but it's time for both of us to grow together ? Thanks for any input on this subject. Obviously accessories and high end attachments can wait until he earns it

Draw length for a compound bow and anchor location are very user-specific. Guys anchor in a variety of different ways. The behind the ear method I show is a very solid spot to anchor because your can't contort the position of your ear. Haha! Draw to whatever length is comfortable and ensure that your bow arm (left arm for right handed shooter) is bent just slightly. If it's straight out you risk a lot of string contact and those bruises and welts will hurt like the Dickens.

I noticed you pressing the string a lot into your cheek. Doesn't this affect the strings path? I guess you tune for that and as long as you're consistent it shouldn't matter, right? I ask this because i purposely lowered my peep a bit so that i now touch the SIDE of my nose, which brings the string a bit off center of my face, which in turn keeps me from pressing it too far into my cheek. I do have to tilt my head a bit though, now. Thoughts and feelings please

Great video, as always. I’m a newbie to archery. I haven’t shot since I was a teen. 47yrs old now and have just shot a recurve a few times recently. I’ve purchased a Diamond Edge SB1, as that’s a perfect beginner bow, with literally no bow press adjustments required. I bought it online from a shop and have done the arrow rest alignment from videos. The question I have is...I have to install the peep sight and I’m not sure if that can be done, without having to loosen and separate the string? FYI: The peep sight string is already strung through the bow string via a fine peep sight string to a thicker one. I hope that doesn’t sound complicated. And I think I have the description correct. Namaste and thanks from Vancouver Island, BC. 🇨🇦🙏🏼
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 5 жыл бұрын
There are products made that can split the string without using a press, but as you can imagine they can put a hurting on a string under tension trying to pry them open with the tool. Licking for you though, if you want to go that route, your bow can be lowered to a VERY light poundage. That will allow a lot less stress on the string, and you could split it more easily. Then you can simply turn your poundage back up to your desired weight once the peep in is.

Please, any advice on compensating for the release loop? I would think that if it adds 3/4'', or so, one would shorten the draw length by that much?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 6 жыл бұрын
32DorBust The short answer is you don't account for a dloop length. If your draw is 30" then you shoot 30" with a dloop as well. The dloop allows you to anchor with your hand away from right in front of your face and allows the use of a peep sight.

there's a lot of folks that would disagree. I shoot exactly the same anchors at a 29". been told I'm a 27", been told I'm 28", but both of those are uncomfortable. feels like I'm shooting in the fetal position. my bow arm isn't extended either, still got the string avoidance bend in it. Pretty sure I'm doing it right too since it's comfortable to me and my groups aren't open or loose, and are very repeatable. most of them folks look at my height. I ain't particularly tall. actually 5'8", but I've got gorilla arms. been a few folks that found out the hard way that when they hit me, I can reach out and touch them back. they at a double disadvantage, they got to swing low, and if they can hit me, I can hit them. thanks for the confirmation that I'm not shooting willy nilly.

Why is it that I am more accurate with an older bow ie: I Robinhood my arrows more often than not and with a newer bow I'm all over the target? Both bows are set at 28 inches draw length, or should I go to a pro shop and have them watch me shoot both bows?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different factors (half of them are internal) factors that go into how accurately we shoot a bow. So don't be alarmed! A pro shop is definitely best to help you out as a second (or third) pair of eyes can really be beneficial in determining what needs to be adjusted to get you into tip top shape.

Like your videos, subbed. Have gotten interested in bowing and bow hunting. So what are your thoughts on a PSE stinger x for a first bow? Secondly, doesent the release system shorten the drawlenght? Could you do a more detailed video on arrows, arent they poundage and drawlenght dependent?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 7 жыл бұрын
John Desolator Glad you enjoy the content! I have shot the original Stinger 3G and that was a really nice entry bow. I'm really a fan of single cam bows for those starting out. I would also recommend you watch Archerytalk's latest video in their 5 entry-level bow comparison. Really a great video from a very reliable resource, and the Stinger X is one of the bows they shoot! To answer on your draw length question, yes, it can shorten it. However, with a release that's set to the proper length and form that's correctly set up, it shouldn't. A TON of people use a release that's way too long when they start out, and it's just bad form and uncomfortable to shoot! So just keep that in mind. I have been wanting to talk about arrows for forever now, but I just haven't had the time to talk about arrow spine, weight, length, FOC, etc. For now, watch John Dudley and his nock-on series here on KZfaq about arrow spine and the different kinds of arrows. Good guy with some good teaching skills! Hope this helps!

This is an old video but I’ve got a question, if I cannot physically draw my bow across my chest like you do here, and I have to kind of push/pull starting high then coming down, is my draw weight too high? It’s only 60lbs but it’s an older Barnett dual cam bow, my buddies single cam PSE at 70lbs I can draw no problem.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 4 жыл бұрын
Old video but I still see your comment! :) Push/pull is definitely a fine way to draw your bow if that's what's comfortable. But if you find yourself having to go high and low and really fighting for each draw of the bow, then yes I'd say the weight might be too high with that bow for you. Like you said, some bows are easier and smoother than others, and that might be the case with your Barnett. Hope this helps!

I recently changed the draw weight on my bow and now feel like the draw length has changed, is this possible or is it more likely that I'm just not used to the feel of it with the higher draw weight and that's why it seems different?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 4 жыл бұрын
Nope! That totally happens. Although the change is usually very small and for the vast majority of archers, it's impossible to detect. Lightening poundage will increase length, and increasing poundage will decrease length. Most likely though it feels odd because now your peak weight and letoff/holding weight are different and that'll definitely make the bow feel different in its draw. Hope this helps!

Does your nose have to touch? My head leans forward when trying to touch with my nose. Is that normal or should I increase the draw length? I'm a beginner and had my draw length set up at a local archery store. The guy seemed to know what he was doing so not sure if I should adjust the length or not.

Hi, as I'm relatively new to archery and have only so far bought off the shelf arrows I was wondering if I could shorten them myself. The arrows are 30" but my draw is 27 1/4" so I'd prefer to have 28" arrows. Can I simply cut 2" off the arrow, remove the insert and tip and re-fit? The arrows are 500 spine which at at 28"/50-55lbs draw weight would suit my bow better than at the full 30" if I've read the chart properly. Thanks for sharing and God Bless.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 7 жыл бұрын
R Mac You most certainly can do that. I would remove the insert first however, then cut the shaft to length. My guess is they'll be in with some sort super glue or fast set glue. The best way to remove them is to remove the nock from the other end, and put a drill bit or other decently heavy piece of slim metal in that end Then flick your wrist and slam the bit into the back of the insert when it runs through the shaft. Tim Gillingham did a video on this for Gold Tip a few years back. You can most likely find it if you do a KZfaq or Google search. Good luck!
@Flexaret
@Flexaret 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, maybe this is a stupid question but how do I remove the nocks? they don't have an insert so I'm guessing they're just a friction fit and should pull out? Thanks, Richard

I bought a used Bear The Truth bow. The manufacturer says 29 inch draw, whoever had it before me evidently had a longer draw than me, mine is 28 1/2. The release point lands at the front of my ear. Can I twist my string to shorten the draw length? If so how would I go about doing that, I don't have a bow press.Any help would be appreciated.

I'm interested to hear your view on how to draw a compound bow... Drawing across the chest or elbow up horizontal..?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 7 жыл бұрын
Joseph D For me, I create the least amount of excess movement going across my chest. I've seen folks with a high or parallel elbow not be able to, or really struggle to get their bow back in the heat of a hunting moment. I've never had such an issue going across my chest so I stick with it. When I shot competitively with a lighter poundage bow I did have a different draw cycle to my shot, but extraneous lateral or vertical movement isn't an issue as the paper target won't spook and run away! Thanks for the question! God bless.

Great video again, I hope my questions don't get too tiresome :) As I'm getting back into recurve shooting, could I take the wing span method to get close to my draw length and then, with some help, draw my bow to my shooting position and have someone measure it from string to rest and work out how I have my arrows from there? The times I had arrows measured out before were at a shop many years ago and I can't remember how they did it. I'm unable to make it along to one( as they're very far from where I live) so I'm opting to go online, ordering the same make as my last ones but with the right length. Hope for some great advice again :)

@averagejackarchery 7 жыл бұрын
SE FullmetalJake If you have someone to help you measure, what you said is definitely a great option. But something to keep in mind is that recurves are fickle beasts. They really like the arrows they shoot the best to be tuned the best. And you never know what those best tuned arrows are until you start playing around with arrow weights, lengths, and spines. Good luck!

Without being able to see your form and how you shoot I don't want to give you any "all out" advice and ruin your experience. But I will say a few things I've always encountered in my times helping folks (and myself) find draw weight and length. 1. 99% of people are either at or below their number. Meaning that I'm at 30.4", but shoot 30". So I doubt that you are a true 31"+ draw length. 2. If possible, shoot at all possible draw lengths with your bow (I'd go 30-31" for you) and see if you particularly group best at one draw length. 3. For us archery hunters, in particular in the North where cold weather is imminent, a shorter draw length causes that nice elbow flex which helps get a big puffy winter coat out of the way during the shot. 4. Make sure your form is really up to snuff and standing straight up. A form that's really leaning back can give the illusion of a longer draw length. Hope this helps! God bless.

@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 8 жыл бұрын
A draw length that's too long is the most likely culprit of the arm slap! I made myself gun shy and actually shot 29.5" for a while after I was fooling around shooting and royally caught my arm with a 70lb bow a few years back. Stick to good form and your proper draw length will show in both shooter comfort and accuracy down range.
