Impressive work, man. Most techs don't even attempt to repair transformers. By the way, the skinny heat shrink tubing works well for that. Don't get the cheap stuff because it gets hard when you shrink it. The clear colored stuff made by NTE is actually more pliable after you shrink it. Excellent work once again. Cheers!

I normally cut away damaged components then desolder the remaining pins. The risk of damaging the board is greatly reduced. However in this case repairing the transformer made more sense. Nice job well done.

Try a Weller or similar heat gun, makes removing transformers a lot easier & a Heavy duty solder sucker helps. A fibreglass pencil is really useful for cleaning crap off boards.EmeritusE, your spot on: I use 90% acetone for cleaning flux residue from pcb's.

Surely armed with this video, the guy could approach the company again and perhaps get a new amp out of them. If they have any integrity and honour at all they would. PS. Try occasionally re-stretching the spring in your solder sucker, it improves the extraction.

Thanks I was searching for a video to see a design detail for scratch building. That 27khz is pretty high for what appears to be some pretty large gauge wire on them transformers. The power supply transformers are the section I'm racking my brain trying to learn. I would guess many get built improperly (freq to skin depth to current handling).

Nice Job! Intermittent shorts like that can be a nightmare to find sometimes. When comes to cleaning the board of flux and other nastiness, have you ever tried acetone? It seems to work quite well at dissolving rosin and doesn't leave the residue typical with alcohol strippers.

My sound stream reference class a was DOA when I got it. One of the large copper coils had detached from the board. Soldered it back on and voilà.

This is not uncommon when polyurethane coated (self fluxing) copper wire is used as it's not nearly as robust as enamel coated copper wire. There are often interwinding shorts when toroids are wound like this. The manufacturers use this crappy wire because it's fast and easy to tin with a hot soldering iron. Unfortunately enamel coated wire can't be burned off with a soldering iron and has to be cleaned with a blade which is time consuming in manufacture. They really should dispense with a toroid and use a bobbin and a split core but it's too expensive I suppose. I wonder what control IC they use for the PSU? Probably an ancient TL494. These amps are so poorly designed and made that I suspect you'll never be out of work. I've spent my career designing and manufacturing switch mode power supplies so I can tell a lemon when I see it.

Have you tried using solder braid? I use it daily and it is far easier to use than a solder sucker, and also removes all of the solder. The stuff from RS is good

You mentioned you would use some at the solder joints on the board but what about over all the wires themselves is that cool to do ? Sounds like my problem with my Kicker ZX S1500.1. That protection light “flashing”. Then sometimes amp will power on and play, but soon as I pump up the juice it goes into protect “flashing”.

Thermal camera will never have visible and IR image aligned on short distances, since those two sensors can be only so close together, that does not change no matter in what price range you will buy. I think your camera works as was intended

Contact cleaner and a brass brush should remove most of the embedded carbon.

Good Day. I Must say, your videos are very educational and have helped me a lot in repairs of my personal equipment. So thank you for that as alot of "technicians" in my country are scams and cost me alot of money in the past. They is only one question I'd like to ask. I've recently repaired a 4 channel amplifier I own which had burnt power mosfets. Along one bank, the pcb was burnt and sort of opening in layers. I scrapped all burnt off parts and cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Then used epoxy resin to make the board solid once again before putting in new mosfets. However after installing new mosfets, I got voltage readings with just B+ and B- connected at the gates of the mosfets on that said burnt side of the pcb (Approximately 1.61V while all of the other 3 banks read 0 V). I wasn't sure if it was defective mosfets from the company. Anyway, I switch out the mosfets of that bank with new ones. Now The amp powers on and works perfectly. After watching this video however, I'm concerned about the pcb being carbonised. My question to you is, how do you know if the pcb has been carbonised and should be cut out like you did in this video? Is it advisable to tear this amp back down and remove those parts of the board between the gate and drain legs of the mosfets in the bank that were burnt? Note. Due to my engineering background, I have a relatively fair idea of the theory but with practical, I haven't had much practice. Thank you in advance for your time and response.

You sir is a genius. Thanks for giving newbie a good understanding of this. A question though: if you have the Protect LED light on right after starting powering a car amp. Amp is unconnected to any speaker or input and there is power and ground. What would be the possible causes of the light to go on? I measured all the transistors and found two of the same types and one of the two was 0 across all three leads. would this be the only possibility or it can also be something else? I just desoldered the transformer, and the short is gone. all the windings of the transformer have resistance except one has a short to ground. Is there any way to ID it to find a replacement?

Hi recently picked up a quality amplifier it does switch on no sound out of speakers I did have a look inside and there is 6 glass fuses so one of them was blown replaced it and it blew when I switched it back any help will be fantastic

Is the power supply trying to up the voltage from 12v to sm higher?

Curious about the Tesa tape. Tesa makes a lot of different tapes. Are you using their tape used for bundling automotive wire harnesses or is this their pvc tape used for electrical insulation? Does your tape have a fleece surface? If so that is the wire loom tape which doesn't actually have a rating for electrical insulation resistance according to their data sheets. (that doesn't mean there is no electrical insulation value in your application) Their electrical insulation tape is a soft pvc tape similar to traditional 3M super 33 black electrical tape and is only rated up to 90 C before it unravels and becomes a gooey mess. (in my experience the adhesive will eventually fail and start unwinding even in summer temperatures of 30c. Tesa's wire harness tapes however are rated from 150 to 300 C which is great for your application. I'm not saying your use is wrong by any means. At voltages less than 100v their should be no problem as long as you use a couple of layers as insulation since most of those loom tapes are usually somewhat thin. I'm really enjoying your videos! any ideas about why such trafo often has some kind of loop on pins. I mean they turn wire back to make loop and next as a pin it going into PCB. Why do they need to make this silly loop yet? Rdc and Ls for sure could be higher, so looks like they like lower efficiency and high EMI?

I love your videos but one thing I wish you could go into more detail is how to test or check the mosfet gate switching transistors, I know they fail sometimes when a mosfet blows and you always insist on changing them but never tell how to check to see if they are still good. thanks

I sadly had to give up my old Hifonics TXi 1500D, was running nicely, then after i didnt need it for a day or two, suddenly no sound from the sub. Or rather, intermittent. I wanted to look at it and sort it out but didnt have time. A couple days later, i ended up smelling that nice burnt smell. Took the amp apart and found all 4 transformers shorted and every single damn transistor blown... Not worth fixing it, so i ended up gutting it and am now searching for a good cheap amp in the same price range. Does seem like the previous owner already had their fair share at damaging the amp, it always smelled a bit funny. Too bad though.

I received an Audiobahn A2150HC that someone stripped the threads on the speaker output set screws for bridging the amplifier. The amplifier works fine so I'd like to be able to repair it. I had thought perhaps that I could use a helicoil. Any thoughts or ideas ?

Will you be able to detect the short in the transformer (at least on the secondary windings), by checking the rectifier arrays? I have had a case where one rectifier array seems to be shorted while on the board but looked perfectly okay off the board.
