The Axial SCX10 Pro is Axial's impressive new kit catering to competitive RC rock crawling. Our early testing has found it to be very good. However, some minor issues have me unsure about driving it to victory in our country's biggest RC crawling comp of 2023. Do I take it with me or do I drive my existing Performance Scale rig that we've built up on the channel recently?
I need some clarity!
Today, we pull out the 4 most competitive 'C2' (or Performance Scale) kit-build vehicles I currently have in my RC garage. The SCX10 Pro goes up against the Traxxas TRX4 Sport (kit), the GMade GS02F (kit) and my SCX10 Raw Builder's Kit with INJORA LCG chassis (custom). This might be the best way to help work out which rig is the one to enter in the upcoming high-level competition!
Let's test!

No worries! There was a guy at our last comp who had the Traxxas Long Link Kit that comes with tut bigger shocks too, but he'd kept the 1.9 wheels and 4.6" tires. Had the shock springs as light as possible and it was something of a semi-droop setup. Seemed to work alright. Been thinking of trying that myself!

Thanks for the video, real interesting to see! I'm comping with mine for the first time this weekend, so we'll see how it goes. What I've found is that you have to use the lower CG to your advantage especially when it comes to ledges like the one you got hung up on, it seems like if you came in at angle, you might could've hooked the rear right tire and pulled it over without hitting the gate. The lower CG will let you pull lines like that a little easier without flipping over. I've found the belly and such slides really well once you get it over the hump, but it can sometimes hang up in the bend on the rear links also. Everything looks different on camera, though, so maybe not. I'll be curious to hear how changing out the shocks works out for you too.

Busted the INJORA Custom rig here and then did the rear diff in the SCX10 Pro! Rough day in the office, that one. Noticed you mentioned overdrive, and though it might be worth it to do an overdrive/no overdrive A/B testing as a video idea, just like your tyre one - The biggest crawler channel on youtube has done one, and the conclusion was OD actually harmed the crawling & climbing ability, especially on low traction surfaces (dust). Would be interesting to see the same test replicated on the terrain you use under comp rules, as his was just whether it could crawl up at all. He used a VS10-4 to switch OD on and off - your SCX10 pro has underdrive on demand either manually or via servo, so you could test that out.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
Interesting, thanks for the idea! My short answer is that o/d helps on anything that needs the front to lead - turns, ledges and steps where you need to 'thread the needle' so to speak with steering and careful throttle; o/d harms on regular crawling as it hampers the rear from pushing the rig forward. Really, it depends on the terrain. I think I could make a solid demonstration of how it both helps and harms. Thanks again, I'll think on it as a video idea. Cheers

You've given yourself a tough decision there Craig. My tought with the SCX10 Pro would either be longer rear shocks to increase the breakover angle and ride height or if you can adjust the rear ride height with shock collars. The only adjustment I'd make to your Injora rig is to runn more droop, mainly as it looks less stable sidehilling than the Pro. Best of luck during the comp, keep the great videos coming please. Your channel is definately one of my favourites. Cheers buddy.

Thanks John, you're right, I could have done so. For what it's worth, at time of filming I had run 11 different vehicles through 27 courses total in the prior 5 days (I just counted!). We had a comp and I batch filmed several videos on either side of it, as I'm getting my channel prepared to run on its own for a month. This was the last of them. I drove with care but not without trying to keep the pace up - videos just get too long otherwise. For what it's worth, I was consistent with both rigs here, too fast or not, so the end result of getting a fair comparison is the same! (Or, it sounded good in theory anyway)

I'd drive the rigs in the opposite order. Start with that you think is the best and finish with the worst. This way the experience you gain from running the courses doesn't affect the performance of the better rigs. Also helps people realize that if you drive a less built car enough, you can compete with a close to stock car too and do well.

@@RCTNT thanks 👍 my curiosity was actually aimed at if the TR4 sport would get closer to the comp rigs with heavier wheels and less top weight. :) (Perhaps it wouldn't, but it would still be interesting to see how much it could improve with those simple mods. And to see the difference between a 'regular' build with minor upgrades does vs a 'true' comp rig) :)
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
The gmade GS02F may be a reasonable stand in here then. I didn't notice until I was on location that the GS02F had 440g in wheels under it - similar to giving the TRX4 the same - and we saw that it got closer to the comp rigs. The gmade has built in overdrive and is less durable but more technically proficient out of the box (or after being built, electronics being equal) than the TRX4. And for what it's worth, the gmade also was running the same electronics as the Sport in this video. In short, these rigs can get close. The more serious comp rigs leave the more regular rigs behind in that last 10 or 15% of performance. The value isn't anywhere near as good as the cheaper kits and RTR options, as your cost steeply jumps when you start getting specialised, but the distance is definitely there! Cheers :)

Ah I see! For what it's worth here, the Sport and GS02F are fully stock, no changes to either, except I didn't notice the GS02F had 440g under it in wheels until I already was at the gorge. I was filming 3 different videos that day and it was just too late to charge that. The scx10 pro was also fully stock, all three of these kits were built to specification in the manuals. That's a fair comparison from that point of view, aside from the GS02F having weighted wheels, which is regrettable. The yellow rig is built from many parts. It's not a kit, though the axles are from the raw builders kit. It's included here as a reference, after all the work recently getting it overhauled (video links in description). I do actually have a number of balanced, fair comparisons of stock rigs on the same course, such as these: Sport vs GS02F kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y9-WiZanp8Cqko0.html Sport, Ecto, Base Camp & Pioneer kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptl2ndCnt8eWfZc.html
