Every kid who grew up wanting to be a paleontologist has to love this. This fossil find is an adventure story, both intellectual and physical, of the highest order. Thank you, Neil Shubin, and all those involved, for your hard work.

Even as a space, computer nerd, I still love biology documentaries like this one. It's awesome. Neil Shubin makes this exciting. He has an awesome personality.

I loved this lecture, for all kinds of reasons. It's simple, it's complex, it fires the imagination, stretches the neurons trying to understand. I will watch it intently again, and pay special attention to Dr. Shubin's explanation of how the development of structures *anticipates* (or seems to) the next level of evolution to follow - how the engineering of the anterior limbs in Tiktaalik allowed us to play the violin, I guess. So much to marvel about. Thank you for making this video lecture available. Thank you for filling our dreams with the creatures of ancient seabeds and river shallows, and with how the genes are the miraculous building blocks.

It's beautiful how all the creatures over time are physiologically similar with the same genetic relationships. One is lead to assume they are made from the same source even over time. The moment you default to evolution is the same as defaulting to intelligent design. There is something missing from this extraordinary complex system where evident is often wrong.

I disagree - intelligent design requires some kind of supernatural /magical creator in order to be internally consistent - evolution merely requires natural processes. Defaulting to natural processes and defaulting to magic are most definitely not the same thing

@aerycksmusic If god has a plan then you're praying for something thats going to happen anyways or not going to happen because its not part of his plan. Are you saying god has no plan, that he does not know what is going to happen?

@Sickopath333 Why it's relevant, is because of the logical consistency between the early development of reproductive molecules and the development of a brain. They both share the same base mechanics and principles. There's no need to make a leap from the early molecules to a brain, because it's perfectly linked chain. Or maybe I misunderstood you. What part of the development of the brain do you find so extraordinary, and not explained by the ToE?

@Sickopath333 The question is not whether they rule out the possibility for dualism, but whether we can gather evidence for this claim. Thus far, all evidence points towards "minds" being the direct, contingent result of the interactions inside brains. Extraordinary, in this case, means exactly that: Beyond ordinary. If you claim properties exists (non-materially contingent phenomena: dualistic minds), then this is an extraordinary claim, no-matter who poses it. It's not a matter of POV.

@Sickopath333 1) You might find it extraordinary, but it's in line with all other observations we've seen so far with regards to other issues. But more than that, your questions have been answered. Split brain; general brain damage, and brain death - with remaining organs kept artificially alive - all testifies to the fact that what we perceive as "me"/"my mind" arises from functions within the brain. Having established this, to claim otherwise requires some hefty evidence.

I don't know who you are talking to or how old you are, but you really don't have to be so rude. Trying speaking with civility, people will respect you much more, not only for your character but for the objectivity and intelligence that comes from someone with greater self-control. Being the opposite may get you the thumbs up from a few on youtube, but since youtube is notorious for some of the worlds stupidest people, it's not exactly something to be sought after.

@Sickopath333 1) The first. Because as it stands, "god" is a unfalsifiable hypothesis, making the 2nd meaningless. 2) The Harry Potter books gives evidence of Voldermort in the same way the Bible does of God, so... no. 3) What I meant: even if you give sound and valid evidence and reasons for the existence of a god, this doesn't mean that evolution isn't still the best and most grounded explanation for the diversity of life (which is the subject of this video).

@Sickopath333 1) "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". I think this explains enough. 2) The validity of the claims in the Bible are the same as those in the Koran or the Bhagavad Gita. To lend more credence to it, you need reliable external sources (and Josephus just won't cut it). Considering that the claim regards an omniscient, omnipotent god, evidence ought to be readily available... but it isn't. One wonders why :)

looks like it could be an alligator or crocodile fossil. A species of such.Possible? The skeletal structure also fits the croc structure more closely than that of fish.

Jim, no it doesn't. You have no idea what you are talking about. It has features akin to a blend between a salamander, sarcopterygii, and teolost fish. Did you not watch the video in its entirety? It does not have any modern Reptilian features.

Jim, alligators did not exist at the time in which this fossil would have been alive. This predates literally every land mammal and reptile.

@Sickopath333 I don't think it's extraordinary, because it's not quite what the ToE (theory of evolution) states. These aren't separate cell finding others and then join. It was only recently I learn just how basic and fundamental this thing is. It's simply self-replicating molecules (yes, at THAT basic a level) where it starts. The molecules that replicate the most will "win". I don't want to make this about semantics, because I've seen enough arguments devolve into nonsense this way.

But don't make out that I was rude to you by pretending that I said even one word of what you mentioned, that is further rudeness on your part. And one other thing, if you are going to advice/criticize people about "Love you enemy" and "Turn the other cheek" maybe you should do it yourself, otherwise you are just a hypocrite.

So before you comment and cry "hypocrisy", get a sense of perspective and context before running your mouth, The"Honest"Theist. Me telling him to "turn the other cheek" is me reminding him of what HE believes, not necessarily I, and hence not hypocrisy. With regards to ridicule, I'm with Jefferson here.

@Sickopath333 1) I think a bit more research on your part is needed here. There's no "greater than" going on here. Your "mind" is directly contingent on your brain, as in your brain (cells and all) = your mind. Give me evidence to support otherwise. 2) I know what you mean, but that's not the issue. We know the descriptions and claims of the Bible, but it still lacks validation, just like Hogwarts lacks validation in Harry Potter.

THIS IS REAL! Pay attention atheists!! Satan sent a demon to my house. The demon wanted to buy my soul and offered me riches. I was weak and I sold him my soul and the demon gave me riches,more than enough. I felt horrible and asked for Jesus to save me, and Jesus did save me. I ask Jesus to destroy the demon and Jesus did just that!! I asked Jesus if I could keep the riches and Jesus said yes. I love my lord Jesus, thanks for the money.

my dog understand sit down, he doesn't understand go make me a tea. what we understand now about how we may have gotten here. we would not have understood 5000 year or so ago. But we would have understood the garden and seven day story as how we got here. Before you kick out God you may wish to think of how backward were were 5000 years ago. How mans most greatness is Gods foolness. I'm just saying if we can turn on eye cell all over the places may be God did a long time ago.
