You're a natural born teacher! Thanks so much for doing these videos, allowing bored uke strummers to break free!! Love you, man!!!

Brilliant tutorship. I am now practicing this finger picking pattern. Only been playing for a few months, but find this very inspiring instead of just strumming to everything, despite different strumming patterns. Thank you.

An excellent breakdown, Phil. It does truly sound like a lot more is going on. I look forward to working these out. Sticking these different patterns in among the others makes it sound not like a pattern at all, but an improvised accompaniment, hey! wait a minute...Wait, what? you mean I can just...?

Hi Phil. I came across your channel recently and really enjoying your lessons. I'm a bit confused though with the fingerpicking. Are we to use 4 fingers T, I, M, R or just 3 T, I, M??? I've seen people just use the T, I. I don't seem to be getting the T, I, M too well, seem to be faster with T, I, M, R. Can you give me some quick advise. I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Hi, Different players will do it different ways, but for the kind of picking in this video, thumb index and middle works best, as the thumb alternating between the G and C strings is your bedrock, your metronome. Trying to to that with the thumb and index, leaving the middle and ring to try and add melodic bits doesn't really work (and would be unnecessarily difficult. I often play wearing banjo picks, and I only ever use three, one on my thumb, one on my index and one on my middle. In fact I made a video about this! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h51khdiEvNzVeac.html

Thank you very much Phil. I will practice and practice. A bit hard at the moment as I'm trying to get into the fingerpicking but with time I'll get it right. Once again thank you for the reply and your time.

This is great, Phil. I have your book "Rags, Cakewalks & Dances" - which I highly recommend - and these tutorials will really help with some of the trickier pieces. I played one of the easier ones to some "strum-only" players and they were amazed - at your arrangement, not my playing :-) (NB Some of the techniques remind me a little of banjo rolls?)

Yes, that's a good point! I'm really pleased that you played a piece, there's nothing better than to know things you wrote are out there being performed. Yes, that forward/backward bit is stright from 5 string banjo, well spotted!
