For drop/fold down sides that Way the chickens could range underneath it also. It would be a combination of the Chickasaw and Joel Salatins chicken tractor.

Great job Eric! I love the Chickshaws. To me they just make sense. I absolutely LOVE the double duty of the handle bar on back. Yes, electric poultry net will keep predators out but what if it fails or you forget to turn it on, etc. I just think having that extra bit of protection is a smart idea. Especially for those with a lot of predator pressure. Brilliant job by two great farmers!!!!!! TFS Blessings always ~Lisa

Awesome, I must have watched hundreds of KZfaq videos and got lots of good insights over the years on how to make a chicken coop. I have been raising chicks for a long time but consistently for last 5 years. I raise two separate batch, one for eggs and another for meat. During this I Lost chick to the predators and made many different coops, again thanks to all the KZfaqrs. I even use electric fence. But your video was the best. I think making chicken cart with a awesome design as yours and adding a portable snap on run could give birds protection and access to the new grass.

Trevor Andrews That may be true, if he stated that I missed it, I think though that his overall build can be greatly improved especially when you consider that his budget was fairly large. Until I endeavor to build a chichshaw I will hold off on further criticism of JR's design. I'm just fairly certain that anyone that will build one will substantially alter those plans he's offering for "free"!

Looks great man! Makes me want to build one. Lol. One thing with handle for moving, one thing came to mind are those weldable stake pockets, i know their usually made for 2x4 width, but i think it would be snug enough to not move around much and that way it wouldnt fall out. You would just need to drill a few holes in it and screw it to the underside of the 2x4. Nicely done though

I'm really impressed! You used your noodle and built a better mouse trap. You're very clever! I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you pick it up and move it. That is ALOT of weight there! I think you did the right thing in choosing wheelchair wheels. I could be wrong, but, I don't think aluminum wheels with spokes would have held up under the weight. Looking forward to seeing more videos on how this works out for you. When you take your chickens out in their new fancy ride, do you bring them back in to a more permanent house at night? Eric, I think this looks nice and works well. If you want to allow the chickens to have access to the ground, check out the simple one built by Al on Lumnah Acres. It's a thirty minute build and takes much less materials. I might use something other than the tarp he uses for coverage, but otherwise like the chickens being able to eat from the ground in addition to the feed.
@jecriggs
@jecriggs 5 жыл бұрын
The chickens *do* have access to the ground when you flip down the door; it serves double duty as a ramp. You can protect their area by setting up a portable electric poultry fence.

I've read some of the other comments and I think the best change Justin made on his 2.0 is moving the handle supports inwards from 6' to 4' apart to reduce the span. Seems like it would also work to put the handle on the opposite side and push it downwards to move it around like a wheelbarrow instead of lifting up? Yours is turning out pretty great though. Thanks for sharing!

Another thought on how to reinforce the handles to support the pipe crossbar: Just add a piece of 2x4 rotated 90 degrees so the grain is crossing the grain in the handle. Put the hole through the two layers and the pipe won't blow out the end grain because the reinforcement is cross grain.
@peterellis5626
@peterellis5626 5 жыл бұрын
For reinforcing that handle - a couple of black iron pipe flanges would probably do nicely.

Hey really like the concept, re: the wheels and the long term potential for twisting, looking back on it would you have made an all metal chassis system for the wheels? It seems that it would take all the stress off the axles and the 2x4’s next to it.

I saw you’ve got the same wheel chair wheels as me as the UK doesn’t have Marathon wheels and shipping is too expensive. I had a problem with the axle rod on the item list (m12 and m10) not fitting through the bearing of the wheels. M10 being too small and m12 too big. I will try your idea with the metal bracket on the side with the original 4 inch rods they came with. Good thinking on it!! What’s the bracket called that you used? Thanks.

Wow, your chickshaw looks like it's going to work out nicely. I'm wondering if you've been watching Justin's chickshaw ver 2.0 series of vlogs over the past few days? Maybe your vloging is delayed from when you shoot the video to your posting it but his ver 2.0 is still kinda flawed with things that are pretty simple. The concept is fantastic but Justin could use a few carpentry lessons. For example I keep wanting to talk to the screen and say "GLUE" !!! With the concern over weight you and he are using 2x4 ripped to 2x2, great for weight but you sacrifice so much strength, then the size screws that get used further compromise the strength. In yours the way that you mount the axel box tubing with 4 lag bolts is highly likely to split/Crack the 2x2. Sorry, but retired shop teacher on this end! Hope that yours works out, but I have a feeling you'll be making updates to the design to fix the shortfalls. I'm not trying to be a jerk, just find it hard not to offer suggestions to improve the dedign.....

Justin designed his to be able to be built with minimal experience by anyone who wants to ( no angle cuts) and he is a permaculture guy. glue for the most part is a no no besides little details like the door latch location is chosen from experience with the previous model
@littlewhitedory1
@littlewhitedory1 6 жыл бұрын
Trevor Andrews Believe me I think that there are many people that are not carpenters that have cringed during JR's Chickshaw 2.0 build. Eric's design is not 100% JR's design and for good reasons. As for the glue, really, a "No, no", why, I'm a retired shop teacher, if I had a dollar for every time a student ate Elmer's Glue All, I would have been able to retire a year early! There is absolutely nothing wrong with basic wood glue, it's non-toxic and works so well with wood that your more likely to have a failure from a knot or Crack in the wood than the glue giving out. Word of advice, if you were to go to a middle school bridge building contest the overwhelmingly most popular glue is Elmer's Glue All...not paper glue, not wood glue, not gorilla glue, not crazy glue....but the "Glue All" product. It's truly an amazing product that so many have tried to out perform but unless you want to spend 2-5 times the money can't be beat. Try it sometime you'll see for yourself. Other things that Justin (IMHO) could have improved on would be his axel system. I believe he added two extra sections of wood to the undercarriage for mounting the short threadall. For the life of my I don't know why he didn't just use a long perhaps hollow tube/pipe with thread on each end and wouldn't have needed the 2 extra sections of wood. I think he made them full length, not even just a short section just to mount the conduit hangers. Before anyone jumps all over me for being critical of JR, know that I greatly respect his knowledge about chickens and perhaps permaculture, however his carpentry skills are horrendous! Most things I've seen him build work for his purposes but man...even Jesus Christ (a humble carpenter) would say a prayer for some of his builds! He doesn't exactly portray the most competent person when it comes to mechanical abilities, did you see his GAFT, he frequently just didn't have any idea what to do and called in assistance. He's a smart guy for admitting his shortcomings but where he gets the idea to put together a "how to" instructional plan for his Chickshaw baffles me. Maybe it's a spill over from the "Just Plant" montra and he's in "Just Build" mode....not a bad thought when you consider how many people would never try to build a chicken coop let alone a portable one! HAVE A GREAT 4TH OF JULY 2018 TO ALL.

Hi can you desin plans on how to make this chickshaw design well. I'm sure Justin would love the input and the fact that we all like the concept enough to perfect it. Iv bought most of the materials but stuck on how to redesign joints and components. Ie legs as part of main structure not add-ons or possibly adjustable feet to lift when moving and to cater for uneven ground. Wheels and how they atach. I got some old bike wheels but don't know how to atach them. Where the best balance position would be. I thought a trailer dolly would help me pull without lifting etc most will be young enough that that's not a problem. But ataching to towe slowly to other parts of property with a lawnmower or sum such. weight verses not blown away in the wind. How to atach a preordered auto chicken door. Or make one the chickens can open and shut them selves. Perdesign attachments such as shade cloth for hot climates and shutters for winter. All these ideas need the right structure to start with. Your experience would be very helpful to us.

I'm watching you building your Chickshaw at the same time as Justin building the Chickshaw 2.0 with young Jonah. I think you're gonna seriously need to step up to stay the game....they've added a built in dust bath and mineral feeder. How about some racing stripes, lightning bolts or flames down the side, that oughtta be cool? Maybe you could turn the handle into a big rear-end spoiler for downward pressure :) Oooh Oooh... I got it.... some fully sic under body RGB led lighting! It'd be like the chicken's own little rave party palace!! If you really wanna impress and blow them away, add blue tooth... everyone knows everything is better with bluetooth! ROFLMAO. I wish I was kidding, but the ultimate would be some kind of water slide or even an auto feeder which the chickens can trigger and make it shoot into the air and..... raining grain ..... BOOYEAH!!! sweeeeeet :D
