Just a word of advice, once you go to double wall vent you have to continue double wall until the termination as per code. The reason being is if you go back to single wall it creates a spot where condensation forms inside the pipe and will create corrosion holes which will cause a bad carbon monoxide issue. I would also advise building a chase around the vent pipe, double wall or not, because it will get hot and you don’t want the little one getting burned on the vent.
@PatrickKniesler
@PatrickKniesler Жыл бұрын
Was going to say the same thing about protecting the hole. Might be good to make it about 10" from the outside of the pipe to the outside of the cage to give the little one time to learn what hot means before they can reach it. While I'm here I'd like to add: please also carry a weapon on your property but you don't need to tell us what it is or that you do & I think a plexiglass window looking down through the half wall might be fun for dogs and children.

Hello fellow North Idahoans! 🌲 Our guess on the fallen deer is… a mountain lion probably took it down, but was likely ran off by a pack of coyotes.

My wife and I were doing some volunteer work yesterday and she was stuck with Caulking. She told me she would rather caulk than have to do the things she does; so much less thinking about what you are doing. She has been on me about flipping a house and I am hesitant to do it, but its a dream of hers and we might have to take the plunge; its her life too and I don't want to ever say I didn't let her do something. Anyways, its calming watching you tape and bed. Riley you slapped that floor down pretty quick. Things are shaping up around Casa Casey!!

We had black bear on our property in So. Oregon. There is absolutely no mistaking the tracks. 4 big tough guys looked down at the tracks, and all 4 of us immediately started yelling "Hey bear!" It was pretty funny. A sign I saw in British Columbia said something like this: __________ This is back and brown bear country. Campers should wear warning bell on their clothing, and carry bear spray. It's important to know the difference between black and brown bear scat. Black bear scat has remnants of berries and grass in it. Brown bear scat has little bells in it, and smells like pepper. _______________ The only problem we had was with our hot tub. This was in the 70's and the few fiberglass tubs on the market were very expensive. We purchased a large used wine barrel from a winery and after having to use some ingenuity, we finally got it back up to our property. We cut it in half and had two very large tubs. One was soon operational with a used swimming pool heater on propane. Very cool. The only problem was a momma bear and her cubs liked it as much as we did. We had to make a bear proof cover for it to avoid scheduling conflicts. That and 400 gallons of water take quite a while to change out (bears stink) and reheat.

Looks great! I hope you guys are enjoying this time with Oliver. We thought about you guys yesterday when we were in Spokane Valley picking up our new to us 1950 O'Keefe and Merritt gas cook stove. We don't make it that far south very often but when we do we think of you. Well you certainly had a lot of foot prints in the snow but without a closeup it's impossible to tell who the original culprit is. But I think you had many opportunists getting a free meal. With dog/coyote/wolf prints you will always see the claw prints. Big cat cougar/Bob cat/lynx you will not see a claw mark with the foot print. We definitely have all of the above listed. I always find it fascinating to investigate what is on the property too. Blessings to you, being a parent is such a joy.

Having a big cat in the area is about as worse as it can get because they can climb better than a bear and have likely visited the deck already as well as check out everything it can smell. The night especially belongs to them, and you'll have to put a chain link top of on the dog run plus close of its door during those hours till its done. Indeed any activity at night needs to be more vigilant and monitoring around the house hopefully with a thermal camera since it and others will stand out like a neon sign.

So you have a cougar, that is awesome. As long as it has the deer, it will prefer them over your dogs. I spotted cougar tracks in your video as you were scanning the ground. If you learn to read sign. It can tell you the story what happened and identify the animal that did the killing. Coyotes rarely take down a healthy deer, but the cougar can do it easily. Coyotes are not pack animals like wolves are. So it is harder for them to kill healthy adult deer.

Definitely cougar. They leave their kills and come back for them. I would encourage you to do some invisible fence training with your dogs and develop a trail cam perimeter around the main house. This will bring a lot more sense of security down the road when the little one is outside. If it were me, with all the trees, I'd have a close perimeter of cams, and a second one further out. A good way to do that is develop a trail that you can walk with the dogs, they'll mark it for you. Riley could add his own markings too. ;-) You have loads of time to establish that and probably work it into your content!

For Riley, to confirm a cougar or mountain lion is simply look at what part of the animal was eaten first. Cougars usually start off by eating the stomach allowing them to get at the internal organs easier. At least that is what I have found in the back woods of British Columbia. Again thanks you guys enjoy your videos very much.

13:21 and 13:26 are definitely shots of a cougar walking around your trucks....and the most likely character to be your deer predator (bear tracks would've been more evident). So as your kid starts to get big enough to be with you outside, be sure you get him wearing hoods/beanies/tooks that have "eyes" on the back. Cats attack from behind, are very drawn to smaller prey and are not so shy they wouldn't stalk your home area during the day, just waiting for that moment when you turn your back. I've seen several vids of that occurring the last few years. Big cats have always been a part of this area and they get less and less afraid of us as we move up into their home grounds. So it's good to just be aware that this is their home too, even if you don't see them. Great drywall job, by the way! Lynn

Keep the dogs in and safe during dawn and dusk hours, when most hunting is done. The good news is the kill was made down the road, not on your doorstep. I will never forget visiting my Uncle up in Colorado. He lived North West of Ft Collins up near the Red Feather Lakes. The house was up at 8300 feet. One night we heard a commotion out in the garage. My uncle went to check out the noise. He walked around the front of the truck to look between the vehicles only to find a black bear. He then proceeded to yell, cuss and kick at the bear to chase it out of the garage. The bear runs out and he closes the garage door and comes back inside and sits back down in the living room and picks his beer up. Acting like he had just shooed a fly off a picnic table.

Hi guys, We live in the S.Western area of Oregon and more than likely the deer was probably taken down by a cougar. Bears can be fast, but a cougar is MUCH faster. One early evening, my wife and I were sitting in the living-room watching the news on TV and a herd of 5 or 6 deer went blazing across the yard 10 feet from the picture windows in a full tilt run. Two seconds later a very large cougar went flying past hot on their tails. As soon as the deer went down the embankment and hit the driveway, they split up and went in all different directions. The cougar must have been chasing them for a while because when it got to the driveway it just stopped, out of breath, stood there for 5 or 10 seconds panting and then just walked on into the woods. Yeah, when I go hiking in the area, I take an old retired ski-pole, without the basket on it, as first line of protection (very sharp pointy hardened steel tip) as a walking stick, backed-up with a sheath knife and a .357 in case of a bear that might not take a repeated shouted "GO AWAY" as a warning. Usually they are more afraid of us and will avoid us, but sometimes not.

(After 8 plus test = it was not Covid) But I could hardly breathe and I was in and out of the hospital. My lungs will never be the same. Please take the extra steps to protect your lungs. BTW - I wish I could make the mudding look as easy as you did. All the best to you both and the new addition. Grin

If the snow has turned more to ice, esp at night, it’s quite possible a mountain lions wide paw wouldn’t crush into it and therefore leave no noticeable tracks.

Riley's a lucky man having Courtney as a mate. I lost mine a few years ago, RIP. Time for me and Yinny, my dog - best friend, to be alone.

The black tip tail..it's a mountain lion. Most likely the what took down the deer. Seems like you have quite a few deer in your immediate area, so would avoid being outdoors between dusk and dawn when they are hunting.

Now you know why we carry a side arms while working in the woods. Mountain lion by the truck. You are in its' home range. You could also have bobcat and Lynx. Coyote, and wolf as well as bear, black and brown. Traction tape for the top of stairs and all treads.

I love that you prerecorded a few weeks of videos to catch us up but also so that you have some much needed time with the baby. Riley, I hope you get a few more trail cams so you can monitor things. The office looks great. 💕

You need to carry a 10mm, and it can take out just about anything out there. I'm happy that you 2 are about to become 3. ; )

mountain liones have a 50 mile radius once they establish their home territory. They could visit the area weekly. Unless they expand their area looking for food. If they are watching or stalking you, you might not even know. Such beautiful powerful animals.

Hey guys. Word of advise: Keep a charger on your batteries in your machines. It saves your batteries a long way and you don't have to buy new once all the time. And I guess your Solar storage should be able to supply the little energy need for this. Of cause you will need to buy many chargers and wires for them, but I think it would be worth the while. Warm greetings from Denmark and the electrical engineer with a lot of battery knowledge.

Boy Scout motto. Be Prepared. Get a Chest Holster and carry a 44 magnum revolver. You can shoot 44 Special for two-legged predators and 44 magnum for four legged adversaries. Keep ammunition in a lockable safe when you are not using it.

I don't know how you two (three) + doggo's manage to get so much stuff done in a weeks times, it really just amazes me. Your videos are the highlight of my week. Waiting to see the next adventure of ambition strikes.

Something you guys should look at is installing trickle chargers on everything with a battery all the equipment and toys $50-$100 for each one. They will pay for themselves with a couple battery replacements from things freezing. As well things always start, which is convenient.

Very nice. With Riley's fab skills go prowl a building salvage yard or a Habitat Re-Store and round up a bunch of sliding windows. Daddy could probably fab a set of triple bypass panels that could be "open" for warm days but yet be staggered into an an overlapping pattern and keep the heat inside the work area. pretty much pt "mom" in a display case.

I know it's going to be a while before the baby is mobile but I think you should box in the stove pipe at least a few feet high so there's no fried baby fingers. Nobody wants that. The space looks great

That's video of a mountain lion walking behind the truck at night. It's probably what got the deer. It probably was also up a tree watching Riley as they generally stay near kills.
