In the ninth and final episode in this series, I trim and adhere the new turn-ins. Then I adhere the original leather turn-ins over them. I also trim and install the original leather spine piece on this 1890s oversized family Bible by Holman & Co., Philadelphia.
"Finishing Touches! Laying Down Turn-ins/Adhering Antique Spine Leather. Before & After Comparison" is episode 9 in this series on repairing an oversized book.

Really enjoyed your work, I know what it takes to restore 100 year old books. When you started I thought you were going to replace the entire cover with brand new leather. I am glad you managed to keep the original. I have just rescued a 1916 Masonic Bible with similar damages, only that my Bible has half of the spine missing. So, I will have to figure that one out. Thank you for sharing.

In other words, you're making it "User Proof" as much as possible. 00:33 I mean, I would have got some clear adhesive film and covered the book .... ONLY JOKING ! 😋 "Measure Twice, Cut Once" is the woodworking and metal trades mantra. 07:26 A masterclass in book conservation, Amanda. What you started out with, was a collection of loose signatures slid into leather covers. Now a beautiful, discrete restoration that all looks like it was always there from new. It gives me encouragement for a mathematics book from 1928. It's looking a bit sad right now and I will take it to a restorer in Adelaide. Thank you for sharing your skills and insights.

I have a question about the endpapers... I learned to build case bindings with a French Groove. We would tip the endpapers onto the textblock before casing in, then adhere the paste-down to the inside of the board after casing in... in this case, I see the endpaper was attached to the board prior to reassembly. Does the endpaper end up being attached to the textblock at all? Did I miss it in the videos? Thanks

Excellent! Fascinating Restoration! I recently purchased on eBay 3 1889 Swedish "Dore" Leather Family Bibles for My Pastor, whose Grandfather was the president of the Swedish Lutheran Church. They are in very similar condition to the Bible featured in your video. How many hours did this restoration take? Can you actually make $$$ or these projects "Labors of Love"? Approximately how much should I expect to pay for a comparable restoration? Are you part of a professional organization that you could recommend someone in Michigan? Your insight would be appreciated.

Hey Scott, you'll probably get a variety of responses to that question. The cost varies by condition, construction, and materials the book is made of. You can use AIC's "find a conservator" page to find some folks near you! www.culturalheritage.org/about-conservation/find-a-conservator

Again, very much appreciate your expertise. Your videos are actually very high quality. Definitely inspiring. I am an amateur woodworker so this is new territory for me. Bear with me. Not quite ready to tackle a project such as this but I have some old books (not valuable) that I could try. Regarding the materials you utilized in this project if you could provide me some additional info that would be awesome. I would like to follow your example as closely as possible. Interested in specs/weights for: -thin long fiber tissue for the page repair -'blotter' paper for page repair -Tengucho(?sp) for first spine repair layer -where do you get your linen and is there different weights/thicknesses? -how/where do I order the 'release' material -paper spine after linen (80 lb?) -Specs for the thicker long fiber for the hollow tube construction Also did you buy your machinist press from the manufacturer (Kurt)? Also unrelated question. On books that have red rot but otherwise in good shape I have applied the Klucel G and thin coat of wax (SC6000) but seems some areas are so thin that even then if you look at them they want to chip a bit. Anything you can do to provide an extra bit or layer of protection? Again these are sentimental books of no significant monetary value. Can't thank you enough.
@SouthernBookAndPaper
@SouthernBookAndPaper 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, please do not dabble with valuable books! Here's a more detailed list. Let me know if you have any questions! -Page repair and first spine layer: store.hiromipaper.com/collections/tengucho-papers/products/tengucho-roll-9g (this is a whole roll. Hiromi also sells by the sheet) -Linen: hollanders.com/products/irish-linen-30-x-30?variant=30340499865654 100% linen. Unbleached, undyed, preferably unstarched. -I think this is the release material you're interested in? It's what I use on the book spines with an Ace bandage or diving weights to hold the spine linings while they dry: geni.us/rBhojA (Amazon affiliate link). - If not, then it's this (this is what I use with the blotter paper between pages. It's the release layer: geni.us/Kioy1 (Amazon affiliate link). -Blotter paper: www.talasonline.com/Cotton-Blotting-Paper?quantity=1&thickness=29 I looked on Amazon and didn't see any. I use 100% cotton. -I ordered oversized sheets of Mohawk 80# cover weight. Here's a comparable product (I think only the color is different). According to their site, it's grain long, which matters when selecting which way to orient it to the spine: geni.us/tvS8VM (Amazon affiliate link) -Hollow tube long fiber paper: store.hiromipaper.com/products/hm-37-senka-shi-thick?_pos=1&_sid=0e154e87e&_ss=r The machinist's press I use was a gift from a friend. Regarding the red rot, I'd probably have to see what's going on in person. You can email me photos - maybe I can tell from those.

Ms Wright, you applied product to consolidate on cover? Can you apply oil also or is one or other? What kind of oil would you recommend?
@SouthernBookAndPaper
@SouthernBookAndPaper 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Scott! I don't typically apply oils, although many conservators do. I'm concerned about how the oils can negatively interact with the leather in the long term. One exception I make is for leather with salvage-level damage. I had successfully used Obenauf's Leather Preservative (not named such in the context of "archival preservation"): www.obenaufs.com/heavy-duty-lp-p/leather-preservative-paste.htm I've used this successfully in a final effort on severely damaged leather after trying standard conservation consolidants and solvents. Basically, if the book is sentimental to the owner and it's still too grimy to handle or store with other books after I try more conventional options. The consolidate in this video is Klucel-G: www.talasonline.com/Klucel-G

Do you know any Preventive means that strengthen the pages to pevent more tears from showing up.

Hey, sorry it took me a minute to reply. Some books are just brittle and there's nothing that can be done to fix that. It sounds like this is the case, especially if tape is too strong. I usually never say never, but I tend to never put tape on the original document. Adhesive tape discolors the original material as it ages and it's a pain to remove: cool.culturalheritage.org/coolaic/sg/bpg/annual/v02/bp02-13.html If I can't repair a book due to brittle paper, I offer to digitize it for the client (or at least the pages that are important to them) so that they can still view the information while leaving the book as untouched as possible. My own family bible is actually made of brittle paper 🙃 There's really not much I can do to fix it! It's sitting in a drawer in a custom box I made for it.
