About 20 years ago I realized 2 things about Suomi hockey: they really were our equals. And they valued the game as much as we do. Swedes and Americans have other games and sports, but Finns and Canadians really care about hockey. I have a story from World War 2: many Finns who had emigrated to Canada in the 1920s and 1930s returned to help defend the country against the Russian invaders. Some brought hockey with them. Technically, therefore, dual citizenship Canadians fought in the Winter War. My aunt kept a newspaper photo from the Winter War showing Finns with hockey sticks and equipment. Not sure they had time to play, lol. (My aunt's husband (my Father's brother) fought against the Nazis in Sicily and Italy.) The Winter War was the beginning of the War for some Canadians.

Luck is needed. Finland has had success on all levels in the past 10 years, but it feels like we’re entering a lull. I hope I’m wrong, but none of the players on this team have created any hype in Finland. And 2022 was pretty memorable as well, with the way the gold medal (Canada vs. Finland) OT went (if you'll recall, Mason McTavish just barely kept the puck out of Canada's net, literally blocking the shot on the goal line with his stick and then making sure it couldn't be pushed in afterwards, allowing Kent Johnson to score the game winner about a minute later). Truly, hockey fans have been spoiled by the last two years of _absolutely insane_ World Junior hockey. I quite enjoy the funny ref moments as I feel like while some of the criticism is deserved I do feel fans can take things a bit too far. for example when the ref called the penalty by saying "u cant do that" its funny and makes the game more enjoyable (although I think he only did that because it was during COVID so there were no fans and he wanted to add some levity to the situation)
