@@alexcooper3007 To give you a sense of dimension: In Germany there are about 21.000 registered ice hockey players. Playing in an club (i.e., being a registered player) is pretty much the only way to play ice hockey in Germany. There are pretty much no public rinks that allow to play hockey (only ice skating) and lakes freeze maybe once per decade for a week or two. Compare that to Canada with its over 510.000 registered ice hockey player and a population in which pretty much everybody has access to a rink that allows to play hockey. Losing to Canada in the third period after a questionable game winning goal (high sticking) is very respectable for that German team. We have beaten Canada a the Olympics before but at the World Juniors Canada brings their very best players (of that age group).

@JM-jy4wv how about the shots on goal? Does that reflect how close it was? Sorry, but Germany was scattered about way too much, to win this game.
@FredsterFotos5 ай бұрын
@@northernsnow6982 In case there is any doubt based on my previous comment: For me it is absolutely clear, that Canada deserved to win and Canada was the better team. The overall shots on goals of 20-35 reflects that. I still find it very remarkable for a German team to be tied well into the third period against Canada. And in that third period Germany even outshot Canada 12-10. So, a win for Germany would have been possible. I really don't like to complain about the refs because in general I think they did a good job and their job is tough. It just makes me even prouder of that team to think that the game winner should not have counted. Probably, Canada would have won it anyways, because they are simply the better team. But as the game against Czechia showed, one (un)lucky deflection can make the difference, despite Canada outshooting Czechia 23-32. I am so proud of the German team because of the huge respect I have for Canada. Just look at the WJC 2023, when we lost 11-2. We were not competing in that game. This year we were competing. Winning against Finnland is also huge for us. Just proud of that team and hoping that they can take away the win against Norway tomorrow.

@Tee123tee5 ай бұрын
If you ever want to see a good comedy show. just watch the IIHF refs. Seconds into the game, a 5 minute major gets called on Geekie for a absolute clean hit. Elbows low as you can go, no aiming at the head. The German player had his head down and was shorter and took it in the face. There was no way Geekie could not make head contact even if he tried. Even with video replay, slowed time x20, they still manage to mess up the call. So fine, you're gonna say head contact is automatic 5 minute major and disregard the fact that the offending player had no chance to avoid it. Then how come when the Canadian play gets dangerously rammed into the boards, its only a 2 minute minor?? The Canadian player may have turned last minute. But remember, the refs established the standard that it doesn't matter if the offending player can't avoid contact, it's still a 5 minute major. Again, another example with the inconsistency are the high sticking penalties. A Canadian player blatantly high sticked a German player when Canada was on the powerplay. This lead to a Canadian powerplay goal. But then later in the 3rd period, a Canadian player tries to shoot the puck, and the stick hits a German player gets the stick in the face. Anyone that watched one game of hockey knows that this is called a "follow through" and is NOT a penalty. But instead, the refs call it a double minor. So in other words, a blatant high stick is not a penalty, but a a follow through on a shot is a high stick? The IIHF is the only hockey organization in the world that is allowed to make up rules on the spot in the middle of games. They do this year after year. Every world juniors there is one game where the refs have to mess up the game by calling an incorrect 5 minute major. This is why the IIHF will continue to remain to be the joke of hockey refs.

It's NOT a clean hit when you see the guys in a vulnerable position and you don't ease up, but instead ACCELERATE THRU THE HIT... Or, as was the case in the game vs Sweden.... extend your arms a moment after making contact... It's 2 minutes all day every day for being a hit from behind (which falls under the auspices of needing to protect players, first and foremost, a la the major on Geekie) ... But what makes it a major, which would have been the right call imo, is the decision to accelerate thru the hit... You see the numbers, you gotta ease up, in that situation...

In the case of the hit from behind, the previous game vs Sweden, the Swede chose to extend his arms, a split second after contact... He did NOT need to do that, muscle memory, or no muscle memory... Think of boxers who twist their wrists just as they deliver a punch... OR MMA guys who straighten out the knee just as they deliver a sidekick... That Petgrave kid did that to Adam Johnson , that exact finishing move, at the last moment, which is what made it Manslaughter in my book... Do you disagree? If NOT... The Germans are producing a lot of NHL level stars in recent years. There's no reeason why, for instance, the Czech Rep with 10 million people should have more NHLers than German has with 70 million people. Germany is also a much richer country that can afford to pay for the kids to play ice hockey. The same also goes for Slovakia, Croatia, Slovania, Finland and Sweden. Doesn't make sense. Most of the countries just listed here have very small populations.

2 goals on 7 shots is actually insane, Canada needs to do something about their goalie problem

It was actually 2 goals on 4 shots at one point, but either way... Yeah they do.

Being half German, I’m so proud of the German team. To even be in that close of a game against Canada, widely regarded as the strongest hockey country in the world is very impressive.

Geekie clean would have been hit in WHL/NHL/AHL this is just more proof and germans wanting calls all the time. Euros and some leagues produce less tough players and ounce in NHL not used to physicality. Still don't think Canada roster is how it should be Divincentiis and others should be on the team.

They missed a blatant high-stick call on Canada earlier in the game, the one they show at 3:55. They're not robots

But he didn’t shoot? He tried but he missed and that is then a high stick.

so Geeki is 6'4 and Schindler (who Geeki hit) is 5'11. Probably shouldnt be having Geeki hit him based on height. Im Canadian btw but that is not alright. u cant hit a guy in the head but at the same time its a bit of a height mismatch no? What do u guys think? Should the IIHF and the NHL put height limits on who u are and arent allowed to check? Say anything more than 3 inches?

The first penalty was legit. The missed high stick on the German player was unacceptable. Calling that boarding penalty on Poitras only 2 minutes was despicable. International refereeing really is questionable at the best of times.
