i wonder what Maroon 5's numbers would look like if they factored in the number of people that hear them in grocery stores

I actually never thought about this. But then you could argue that the music is then listened to by a metric ton more people who are shopping in said businesses so the actual number of people "listening on spotify" could be hugely more than we're seeing

To explain a little bit of the Arctic Monkeys popularity on Spotify, their album AM charted really high in a lot of countries when it first came out in 2013 and to this day a lot of their most streamed songs come from that album. Why exactly that is, I'm not entirely sure. But the numbers don't lie.

The problem with going by Spotify metrics is that you can't accurately gauge anything that existed before Spotify. You could have one of the biggest songs of 1991, but only 2 million plays because Spotify wouldn't exist for another 20 years.

There is a definite age/ technology acceptance bias that kicks in if you use Spotify to determine how popular a band is. I listen to a lot of music, but very little, if any is streamed. By contrast, my 18 year old listens to a lot of music also, but almost all of his listening is through streaming. Another factor to consider, which Finn pointed out also, is the power of the mega hit song. Many of the highest Spotify listened artists have high numbers because a large group (for example, teenaged boys and girls) will listen to their new favorite song on repeat, pumping numbers. Spotify is this generations radio, where the young thrive the the older generation is referenced but rarely listened to.

Japanese people still buy albums, the audience for Japanese-language music is just smaller overall, and the older people basically don't stream. There are Japanese legacy bands that sell out stadium tours and barely break maybe 150,000 monthly Spotify listeners because of this (X Japan is around 290,000 because of their largely boomer fanbase and most of their contemporaries are even lower). Bands and musicians that are more popular among a younger fanbase do a bit better, but the most streamed Japanese band/musician on Spotify currently is YOASOBI with about 8.2 million monthly listeners. Breaking a million monthly listeners on Spotify is huge for a Japanese artist.

I was actually shocked at how many streams it takes to equal one album sold. Like Metallica‘s new album had between 15.5 and 16 million people listen to the album on Spotify but that only equals like 12,000 units? What’s even more impressive about that is there albums sold just under 150,000 and only 12,000 of it was streaming so that means about 138,000 people went out and bought a physical copy of the new Metallica album
