Motorhead in terms of no-nonsense rock are one of the best, Lemmy stuck to what he knew and it worked, but yeah you can't really say they're any greater than that because of the lack of musical progression/innovation. One of the funniest Fantano reviews I've ever seen was his Knocked Loose one, where he kept comparing them to Converge because you know that's the only metalcore band he can bring himself to acknowledge is good and would probably rather die than acknowledge he likes something that's clearly influenced by deathcore or 00s metalcore.
@EclecticoIconoclasta

I have agreed with both actually. Still Finn actually likes pop punk (US pop punk in particular is terrible, very annoying and something I did not even like as a teenager) and near butt rock metalcore from the 2000s. Someone said it well that Finn sometimes seems to have the taste of a teenager from 2008. His criteria for "good" seems to be very bipolar of either getting annoyed at music that is not for moshing or just going very stupid and liking very pop crap or mall pop punk with their annoying whiny voices and complaining about life in the suburbs in the US. Nevertheless I do agree that Radiohead is not cool anymore now although I did enjoy some of the tracks from The Smile album. In general I do respect Fantano more than Finn´s taste but of course Finn´s videos are ones to go if you are a metalhead or into hardcore (although Banger seems to me are really deep metalheads while Finn just gets stuck with mallcore crap from the 2000s). Now if you really like innovative or great underground stuff go to the UK website The Quietus where you will get in their best albums of the year lists very avant garde or underground stuff. They seem to have no commercial interests at all and so they really just champion what they really like no matter how unpopular it is while Fantano and Finn have to do videos for a profit that often come very stupid and even Pitchfork often gets very pop stupid and now particularly with their new owners

The thing with Death Grips is that they came out in a very specific era. While their sound may not be as fresh now, keep in mind that The Money Store came out in 2012, where basically nothing sounded like it, it was a pretty unique sound at the time and even today, and in many ways, predictive of the next 10 years of internet culture and music. And I really don't think I agree with them being "fake weird" when they released things like Fellas On The Moon, Steroids, Gmail and the Restraining Order and Year Of The Snitch, albums that are legimitely bizarre and weird.

Thinking Radiohead isn't great is pretty much not an option if you appreciate music. There's a reason musicians love Radiohead. They are great for the exact reason you don't like them. You think they're fake weird. People who understand songwriting and experimentation realise they're walking a fine line that everyone else hopes to walk. They can fuck with time signatures, use syncopation, use instruments and effects in creative ways, use unexpected chord progressions, delve into different genres, while still writing catchy songs that still sound like Radiohead. And have you heard their production on some of their records? I know this sounds super condescending, and maybe I'm totally wrong, but most musicians I bet would agree Radiohead is hard to not at least appreciate. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but your take is just weird because being avant-garde while being mainstream is the hardest thing to pull off. And why is weird necessarily better? Don't get me wrong, I love some experimental music, but I appreciate sophisticated song writing that carves out a catchy song even more. Why is being into "weird" music gatekeeping if it's easier to make weird non-catchy music? Stop trying to outhipster hipsters. Hipsters suck, but they have pretty good taste.

My opinion on weird music is that if you're going to be weird, you don't need to go fully off the deep end. For example, Radiohead. In the wide landscape of Avant-Garde music, Radiohead is not that weird. That doesn't mean their music isn't good. I think the members of Radiohead would agree that they do not make the weirdest music possible. Titles like that should go to bands such as Throbbing Gristle and The Gerogerigegege. But just because their music is more accessible than Avant-Garde, it doesn't mean they make bad music. Of course music is subjective, but calling an artist bad because they aren't 'weird enough' is a pretty lame justification. Also, Radiohead making Avant-Garde accessible probably got a lot of people into the Experimental music scene, and that's a win in my eyes. Also, just because it came up, Sepultura and the Circle Jerks would not have existed if not for The Stooges and Television. (Also, you're tripping Finn. Aphex Twin was MAD influential. Here's a list of people influenced by him: Korn, Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Doja Cat, Daft Punk, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Skrillex, Radiohead, Bjork, Deadmau5, A$AP Rocky, Nine Inch Nails, JPEGMAFIA, Death Grips, Pharrell Williams, Flying Lotus, Nirvana/Dave Grohl, Calvin Harris, DJ Shadow, Arca, Vegyn, Iglooghost, Slowthai, Billie Eilish).

I don't really get the argument that an artist/band isn't good because they aren't "weird" enough? Like, sure, dg or radiohead aren't the most abstract or weird, but they can still be good. @@ghost_mall There are a lot of bands whose most popular music isn't an accurate representation of their quality. For example, Weezer with Beverly Hills being one of their biggest hits, or for a more extreme example, The Beach Boys, who, at the peak of their creativity, were ignored by critics and fans. Telling someone that Kokomo isn't as good a starting point as Pet Sounds doesn't make Brian Wilson a hack. And to be honest I don't even think Death Grips have that issue, if you listen to say, Guillotine or Takyon you have a decent understanding of about 75% of their music's overall aesthetic, but if you refuse to listen to anything beyond the first song or album when it isn't a group's best work, you're missing out on a lot of amazing music.

I think if you read a lot about a band before actually hearing them, it's definitely hard to jump into their music objectively. And that goes both ways. On the flip, I remember thinking that I'd never like The Grateful Dead because they're the "antithesis of punk" (i ended up like a fair bit of them), or thinking I'd hate all Pink floyd because "Johnny Rotten wore a shirt that said "I Hate Pink Floyd!". When you're kid and having an identity is important, it's easy to jump on those bandwagons until you become an adult and it's just ingrained in you to dislike certain bands for absolutely no reason. On the flipside: I remember being so excited to finally hear the Replacements, then later on, Turbonegro. I've read so many amazing things about those bands and the way they were described, they seemed to line up perfectly with my tastes. To this day, I can name about a handful of songs by both bands that I actually enjoy, and I find the rest of them really boring. Now comes my objective point: When I first heard the Ramones, I had no idea what I was listening to. Absolutely no clue. They just counted "1-2-3-4" and went right into the song on the radio. I decided about 20 seconds in that it was the greatest thing I ever heard. They instantly became my favourite band of all time and that was 28 years ago now. So, when I hear anyone say "the Ramones are overrated", all I think is "no, you just got sick of reading about how great they were before you actually heard them". Bands like the Ramones deserve every ounce of credibility and respect they get. (PS: I'm aware the Ramones weren't included in your list, but I heard many people say the Ramones are overrated). Guess my point is that what constitutes "overrated" or "underrated" depends on a variety of things, including where you grew up, what kind of books/zines/magazines you randomly decided to read, what albums you decided to take a chance on, the attitudes of people you were surrounded by, etc.
@richardarnold5279
@richardarnold5279 Жыл бұрын
@@bozhno Fair enough. To me the Ramones were like an amalgamation of rock'n'roll's earliest traits up to the point they formed. which would include everything from the earlier rockabilly 50s stuff (Elvis), the vocal girl groups (Ronettes), the British Invasion groups (Beatles), the bubblegum groups (Ohio Express), the harder-edge/louder groups (Sabbath), glam groups (Dolls, Sweet, etc).... then condensed all those influences (based on their own amateur musicianship) to basic barre chords and a 4/4 beat. I remember Tommy said in an interview that they just missed hearing those old short and simple pop songs and they wanted to bring that back and combine with a hard rock sound. It came out weird because they themselves were weird. Of course, I only really understood these things well after I heard them. I think I just heard them at a time in my life where music was only finally becoming upbeat and fun again after Grunge started dying off (I'm 39 btw), so it was nice to hear something that not only sounded fast and loud, but upbeat and fun. I guess that's why Dookie did so well too; kids were craving to hear something like that after the death of Kurt Cobain. As for the Pistols, I was blown away by that record the first time I heard it. I feel your way about the Buzzcocks actually. Another band I thought i'd love, but only care for slightly. Then I heard the Undertones and thought "oh! THIS is what I wanted the Buzzcocks to sound like!" lol. But to each their own!

Some wild opinions in here lmao. Radiohead is actually a legendary band lol. Wouldn't call my self a huge fan, But they really have had a huge impact on most modern alternative rock since the early 90s. And then to say Aphex Twin trash lmfao. Aphex Twin is to date still one of the most unique and influential artists of modern times. Even legendary bands outside of electronic music like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails or Radiohead it self claimed to be heavily inspired by Aphex Twin. I honestly could not come up with a more impactful artist for me personally. I get that if you're main genre of music is generic Emo and Metalcore then it might not be the most accessible music out there for you. But really then stick to that instead of bashing on other styles you got no clue about lol. Also the whole IDM is nothing what the guy him self ever agreed on, in the 90s overal electronic dance music was quite basic and primitive. vs IDM what actually was pushing a lot of it's limits by using a lot of complexity and deep synthetic designs for its time. Fact that there are big professional orchestras out there covering some of Aphex Twins early work says enough about his composition skills. Widowlicker was simply a test to see how big of a mainstream hit he could create by mostly using his voice. I think it's a banger, but for sure not nearly close to his best stuff out there.

Just like doesn't make any sense comparing Morton Subotnick or Wendy Carlos to the "weirdness" of the Residents, Captain Beefheart or Frank Zappa. Your edgy dichotomy didn't exist in real life, even more because those "edgy" jazz musicians where often intrigued by pop music. Miles Davis was fascinated by james brown, the talking heads and Michael Jackson, Ornette Coleman praised an alternative band like The Violent Femmes, Philip Glass (one of the 4 fathers of minimalism) collaborated with Aphex Twin, Morricone with pet shop boys and I can continue for ages. This group A vs group B just lives in your mind, not in the mind of the artists you elevate as "real edgy".

Every point that's ever been made about Mr. Bungle is both incorrect and correct at the same time because the music changes every ten seconds, yeah the beginning of squeeze me macaroni can be pretty difficult for some people but it changes to something different in 13 seconds and then it changes again and again and always has something fresh for you. also my ass is on fire has one of my favorite sections in music starting at 1 minute and 40 seconds and ending at 2 minutes 26 seconds in the song starting with just guitar moving into a chorus like thing and then a percussion instrument that sounds really cool but I don't know what it is and then record scratching. Its hard for a band to be overrated when so few people listen to them, also California is a great album. its funny because I agree the self-titled is my least favorite of their original 3 (even though I still love it). This video is clearly only made to make people angry, don't do that. People like you make people feel invalid about their own taste and make them feel like shit for liking something weird or different. Bungle fans don't act like they invented music, we act like they are geniuses that always make something new. I would know I was raised listening to Mr. Bungle because that's what my mother played for me as I grew up and I became accustomed to that weirdness, if you don't like it that is fine just don't go trying to invalidate people for liking them. Also the Radiohead placement is criminal, I guess we're pretending that 2007 never happened.

As a wrestling fan I'll always give Motorhead props for writing the best wrestling tune in history, The Evolution Song. I think the official title is "Line In The Sand" but I haven't listened to much of their stuff to have an actual opinion.

I dunno, these hot takes are coming from someone who ardently defends Nu Metal and Pop Punk. I understand that Finn thinks being aggressively unpretentious ad basic is punk af but c'mon, I'm not even a radiohead fan but How are you gonna tell me Blink 182 and Linkin Park are better bands than Radiohead when they are clearly not. The dude just hates music that's assertively artsy and pretentious. The dude bases his identity on being punk rock but like doesn't like Stooges? If you don't like the stooges, you have no taste, period. The dude has sheltered ass suburban middle schooler ears.

*PRMBA speaks the truth to power that Fantano won't.* I once had a friend who was COMPLETELY into Aphex Twin, Mike Patton, Radiohead, and all manner of weirdo circlejerk fodder; and we spent days riding around and getting high, me desperately trying to get my head around Skinny Puppy's goth-ambient-jackhammering with a system full of 90's weed and other things. I tried, I really did, but alas - Dead Can Dance was my palette cleanser between servings of Film OST's.

I don't know how Finn can say Death Grips is not good with a straight face considering all of the other music he likes or thinks is groundbreaking. I almost can't think of a more groundbreaking and interesting group than Death Grips in the past 10+ years. And I'm not even a Death Grips stan, I just think you can't deny how sick they are. I can not disagree more with his take lolol like it genuinely upset me even though I'm not even a massive fan of them. Also, Aphex Twin is fantastic. Utterly brilliant and groundbreaking artist. Like, a producer's producer. Calling him trash is just a fat fucking L lol...pure ignorance. If you have ever had a shred of experience in music production, sound design, or programming drums, his music will blow your fucking mind. Not to mention Aphex Twin has been producing NUMEROUS different variations of electronic music since the early 80's, and even has a new EP set to drop next month. He's got tons of longevity. I'm genuinely a massive fan of Aphex Twin, he's far more interesting, influential, and groundbreaking than 90% of other electronic music producers, and that's not even a hot take.

It's music. It's subjective. Finn has pretty varied musical interests. Just because something is technically great or groundbreaking, it doesn't mean he has to like it. He has talked about this countless times.
