Also in the category of ‘old artists’ this year: Skinny Puppy did their final tour, killed it at every show, and then official called it day. An absolutely integral band in the history of Industrial Music. They never compromised on their vision and gave theatrical & memorable performances. While they do have a few ‘low points’ in their discography, they have an impressive and influential amount of work that holds up to this day for (again) their unique vision and style. Well done, Skinny Puppy. Absolute legends.

If those guys actually got passed that and gave it a real listen, they would notice it’s very well written pieces of Art Music with deceptively simple parts. It’s all one guy that writes the stuff and bounces it all with a very talented drummer… Maybe the 3 million people who follow them on Spotify also use Tik Tok ( 2 truly evil inventions ). Ok. It's comforting to me that 2014 is a decade ago, but I'm into immortal stuff so I enjoy being further away from years that felt futuristic and advanced at the time. I grew my hair out to anticipate the indie-rock comeback, hoping more metal accompanies it like before. Also, the 2011 nostalgia is bubbling in the midwest. Sometimes the Red Line is looking more like a Blue Line train from late 2010. There are definitely smaller cycles within the 20 year cycle. I was dressing like I did in 2009 during 2020 myself. I think it's not 2023 per se but rather the post covid era that reinvigorated so many people around the world, including musicians and artists in general. Being able to leave the house again and go on tours has been almost as reinvigorating to musicians as it is for gay when they come out of the closet. This massive burst of energy got everyone's creative juices flowing again. Whether it's the classic bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, etc, releasing new albums that are actually good again to new wave of 'modern metal' it's a good time for everyone involved. Almost like a post war baby boom situation.

Because it's not even worth mentioning. I was the biggest A7X fan from 8th grade to 1st year of college. I seen them on thier Nightmare Tour and Hail To The King tour. After 6 agonizing years of waiting. I was genuinely upset at how lackluster and disappointing the new album turned out. I was hoping so bad for a return to form of something like a mixture of Hail To The King and Nightmare albums. Shoot I'd have been happy as hell with a Waking The Fallen or City Of Evil sound. They clearly tried to be innovative and experimental. And some bands can pull it off and even move the needle so to speak. Like Bring Me The Horizon has done. But this was not that at all. And finn forgot about mentioning it because let's be honest. It's the kind of album you would easily forget about when none of it is worth remembering outside of MAYBE The song Nobody which was halfway decent. I think The Rev truly might have been the secret sauce of Avenged Sevenfold. His last album was Nightmare which he practically finished before dying. Since A7X basically did a tribute album to the greatest bands making songs that sound similar to already huge songs like Sad But True. Then they did The Stage which was mediocre with a couple good hits but compared to the new album its GOD TIER. This band has more talent then most every will between Syn, M, Shadows, Thier Drummer and the rhythm guitarist. Way too much talent to waste it making songs like they did.

Funny how every time metal gets popular again it’s by bands making completely different genres of music and then putting a drop of metal in it just so they can claim it’s metal and use the aesthetic, people talking about how great it is for the metal community when sleep token is the most popular while they can barely even claim they are a metal band 😂 I always grew up in the scene being told that authentic metal is more important than mainstream validation but it seems like the new age tik tok metalheads are the exact opposite, talking about how great it is for the scene that they are getting mainstream validation and that popularity matter more than authentic good quality metal, it’s definitely getting big but at what cost? The top bands barely even being metal and instead being other genres just so they can get industry attention, like atleast nu metal still had a core base of metal in it, these new bands barely even sound metal and instead sound like completely different genre with maybe a riff thrown in at the end, am I going crazy or does this seem like a bad direction metal is heading?
@DrewCheech
@DrewCheech 8 ай бұрын
If I may humbly submit a reply - No, I don't think you're going crazy. AND, at the same time - I think you're getting very hung up on this "being metal" concept, to the point you've got more comments on this post than any other (that's not me throwing shade at you either, respectfully, it actually helps add context to your feelings.) This whole authentic metal vs. mainstream validation, in the humble opinion of an absolute nobody over the internet, is at best unnecessary and at worst, toxic. You obviously love metal, the bands and songs in your rotation are not just music to you, but a part of your identity. The downside to that - is that as fans we tend to become territorial. It's the only possible explanation if we have an issue with something we love becoming popular. You ask the question, but at what cost? Then the only cost listed is YOU don't like the sound, and feels it's not "metal at it's core." From what I gather, you're an "OG" when it comes to metal. And if I'm even remotely right on that, the metal you grew up with and loved was not the popular metal, it was not the stuff plaguing the airwaves. Times have not changed. What's popular and trending may not be your cup of tea, that's no different than me loving Lamb of God when everyone else talked about Limp Bizkit. Or when I wanted to listen to Megadeth while what trended was Motley Crue. The arguments will never end when it comes to what something is SUPPOSED to sound like, especially when we're talking about music that's so ingrained into our lives it's become a part of it. So no, you're not crazy. You're more normal than you think. And, I also don't think metal is heading in a bad direction. Because at the same time we see the popularity of bands like Sleep Token and others, we got AMAZING metal releases from bands like Suffocation, Tomb Mold, Ahab, etc. And bands like Sleep Token, or Bad Omens, even Spiritbox, can be stepping stones to those heavier, more traditional sounding metal bands. There really is something for everyone now. I hope I didn't come off like a jerk in this reply, and I'd be curious to hear from you what newer metal releases this year worked for you? :)

Someone on my Snapchat took a selfie with her and Steve Harwall at the bar a couple weeks after the scandal a couple years back. It was just sad to see the man lost his career to alcohol and was still going out to the bar.

I feel like the "tiktok pop punk" revival has helped warm up casual music listeners to listening to music with loud distorted guitars and drums...it wasn't the right trend at the right time because it didn't last more than three or so years...that's just how things are nowadays though with popular music and music in popular culture...trends cycle faster in today's social and cultural climate with social media becoming this hype cycle rumor-mill bandwagon...i think there will be something that comes out soon with some type of rock element in it's music that becomes a new trend and it will be bigger than "tiktok pop punk"

Man Finn really has zeroed in on that TikTok line in "The American Dream Is Killing Me". Like it's not like they made a whole song about the issues of social media (which is a genuine worry) in a cringe way, they just said like 3 words and kept going with the rest of the song.

I have checked out several Sleep Token songs and I have yet to hear anything in their music that's metal. They sound more R&B/Boy band then metal. I watched one reviewer who listened to the full album and he said he added up all the moments that might be metal, and he said he was being very liberal with what he allowed to be considered metal, and it total 16 minutes on an album that's 63 minutes long. For a band to be metal then metal should be the dominant genre in the music. 16 minutes of generously being called metal on a 63 minute long album doesn't make you a metal band anymore than Celtic Frost adding some symphonic elements to Into The Pandemonium makes Celtic Frost classical musicians. A lot of people argue Ghost isn't a metal band, but Ghost is a lot more metal then Sleep Token.

How is Ghost more of a metal band than Sleep Token? Almost all of their music is just dark pop rock. They have little to no metal riffs, no intricate metal drumming, etc.... Sleep Token obviously takes elements from pop and r&b, but they also are clearly heavily influenced by heavy rock/metal. Their drumming and guitar playing is much closer to metal than anything you find in Sleep Token. They have groove. They have riffs. They have guitar solos.

Ghost's entire first album is 100% a doom metal album. I would even argue Ghost's 3rd album is a metal album. Ghost has more metal riffs then Sleep Token. I have yet to hear a single thing I would consider metal from Sleep Token. But then again I also can't make it through a single song because I hate R&B @@justsomerandomguyman

Except only bad "metal" got popular this year, theres literally no guitar on Sleep Token's latest album, and Bad Omens is the lowest denominator sugarcoat metalcore that everybody always hated otherwise, but now that theyre big its somehow noteworthy, shit the bar is so low for this genre sometimes.
