Hech writes briefly on the federal judge. It appears the judge asked for more. This is the only avenue for change, a federal lawsuit. The Maryland court won't satisfy on their own. Give the federal court a tight case including precedence.

my sister (who is barely a legal adult) went thru the foster system and recently had to go to court for legal charges against her, which thankfully were dropped. she spent 1 night in an rcmp holding cell and despite her charges being dropped, was treated as tho she was guilty by everyone she met including shelter workers. my sister is pregnant and was told by a shelter staff 'maybe ur baby will b born in a prison hospital' as they laughed. my sisters charges were dropped. if u say a thing like that maybe u r the one who is unsafe for the community n should b locked away from everyone u know and care for.

Brilliant, Fiona -- this was so well stated. Thank you! Jails and Prisons do not want the public to know what goes on there, and the more you know, the more you realize our impression of justice is just so different than the actual business that takes place there. The way municipalities govern pretrial detention tells you so much about the true spirit of a community.

Fiona, you're right...the system is very broken 💔. It's just the sad truth that people just don't care and everything revolves around money and if you don't have it you're screwed. What you are doing is the right thing! Would love to talk to you and explore your thoughts and ideas! You are amazing! Much love 💕

Wow. This really helps. I have a friend who’s dealing with a court trial. I sent this to his wife so she can have some idea. Her lawyer didn’t reach out. He’s in jail without evidence of the “crime he committed”, although he did nothing. This truly helps out. So thank you Fiona. My friend needs to come back out and be relieved of this bullshit.

I work as a social worker with kids that are in between extreme charges and waiting for court cases and sentencing, pre trial screws these kids every time, and even when they are brought on trial something is missing somethings not done right and it’s rescheduled again and again the system dosent want people to get out of it espically kids all these homes they put these sentences kids in the company’s get thousands a day such a small portion of it goes to bettering the kids life it’s so important that people with platforms speak up, thank you for doing so we’re trying our best to pull people across Canada right now for statements on the systems professionals etc it’s an oubliette of a hell hole they put these people at the lowest point give them nothing take away their strength and inspiration and say have fun climbing and then leave you there. All of the kids right now are really obsessed with you because car rides mean good music, thank you for being such a loud inspiring voice❤️

Thank you for speaking on this important issue, Fiona! Beyond being a majorly talented singer/songwriter/musician, you are an empathetic person with a good heart! Keep speaking truth to power and fighting for what's right. Our country's justice system and the prison industrial complex is beyond cruel, unfair, and inhumane. ❤

First thought about the importance of overseeing the courts is the necessity of people for people, some of whom are in the courts following arrest. The blocking of Zoom for court watch and the inferiority of the audio deserves immediate attention. It’s 2023 what is the language of the right to observe the court? If it’s not specific to the district in which the court lay, or specific to physical presence in a court by the observer, then this would be interference with the right to observe the court. Only a federal court could rule to impose clear guidelines, a federal lawsuit should be made. The idea of the press being the means for a broad audience who have the right to observe but cannot logistically be in a limited space only adds to the necessity of modernization for court observation. At a time that was the only available means of disseminating, press in court, now that is not the case. The court running interference on Zoom observers today is akin to physically blocking their courtroom from the people and the press.

And yeah, I know what it is to live years without the opportunity to live freely, being treated as less than human, no people to support or even listen to the absolute truth of my situation, repeatedly leading to houselessness. It's good that your attention will help others in this. No, I was never in jail nor falsely arrested.

I’m not familiar with everything you’re talking about, but I do know that waiting the weekend to see a judge violates the constitutional guarantee of due process by further violating the ‘similarly situated’ clause. All aspects the same except the intangible day of the week. Also, from a ‘public hearing’ perspective, with the evolving technology, supposed to be considered in our ‘evolving’ constitution, court tv should be standard. Not only is it a way for family to support their loved ones, but it is also a way for voters to assess their elected officials as well as give us the ability to gauge our government’s operations. I’d be interested in hearing more about ‘pre-trial’ services. Really good conversation.

Major 'blast zone' effect in my life almost 6 years later. Then, again, 2-1/2 years ago. I was a court watcher, in person, while the other person, never showed up .... Never showing up. A tired, indifferent, court appointed lawyer. I feel this sense of collapse. Never an apology. Never a "we were wrong," but I knew it was wrong. Not even 2 nights in jail! And we were all just packed into a cell, on a Friday, moving from cell to cell, for their convenience. Every once in a while they threw these gross bologna or peanut butter sandwiches into the stall. Like we were animals. And this is jail. Just jail. Maybe 30 or more of us packed into this freezing cell, some people used to it. I was off my medication and I was shaking, crying because so much happened... a guy assumed I was coming off heroin. While the person(s) that instigated and opportunized on my compromised state, in order to bait me and call the police on me. These people were laughing all the way to hell. People, watching, smirking. "Limp" and "Under the Table" have been on repeat in my mind. You have been with me, from Tidal to now. I was 13-14 when that came out. 🙏🌻🌈 Thank you, thank you. Just... Thank you.

I think there should be separate holding facilities and support systems for non-violent offenders. Obviously, someone’s life shouldn’t be ruined if they’re not a danger to the community. Now, if you’re that guy who pushed someone in front of the subway train for no reason and it was caught on video? Yeah, you should be held. The whole pre-trial services thing is very scary either way. Holding someone for 4-5 weeks is beyond unreasonable.

The people she's talking about can't even officially be considered offenders - they haven't been convicted, haven't been tried.

Zoom is free for people tuning in to court, if they at least have a smartphone. It expands access; the courtroom is open but very problematic for people who have jobs, or who have to take care of children, or who have trouble affording transportation, or who are handicapped or sick.

I wonder what our rights are to have citizen owned equipment on public property like a court house. A dedicated internet connection, few web cams w/ mics wouldn't be expensive. Sadly not versed enough in the law to know if forcing the matter this way would be possible. I have other outlandish nerd ideas but I'll stick to the simple one above. Quick 2nd one is if court houses have public wifi; maybe someone present at the hearing could live stream for the rest of your group. Although I'm in the MD region I'm lacking the time to provide any substantial assistance in person. Please update us if any remote internet people can help.

How do you court watch I've always wanted to know
@BillHaines37
@BillHaines37 Жыл бұрын
Find a group - near you for courtwatching in person, or anywhere for courtwatching on line. In my group, we get the information for the afternoon's cases from the court that morning (online), and watch together taking all the notes we can, then compare notes to make sure we're getting it right, then put it into our records, and then we report the worst things we saw to people empowered to correct them and/or make sure that sort of thing doesn't happen again. There's been real change over time. Also we do lots of other related things.

If there is a risk, for example, of a person absconding, then the least intrusive measures possible should be applied. A range of non-custodial measures are available, including bail, confiscation of travel documents, reporting to police or other authorities and submitting to electronic monitoring or curfews. Alternatives are less expensive, and savings made could be better invested in creating a just and effective criminal justice system, with more thorough investigations, more judges, quicker procedures and improved prison conditions. However, in many countries pre-trial detention continues to be imposed systematically on those suspected of a criminal offence without considering whether it is necessary or proportionate, or if less intrusive measures could be applied. We advocate for pre-trial detention to be used only in exceptional circumstances, in line with international human rights standards. We will help to develop and promote alternatives. In addition, we will promote access to legal aid and ensure places of pre-trial detention are effectively monitored by independent monitoring bodies.
