Performing a fault finding exercise on a fire alarm system in central London today. Half of the tenants were not in that day which proved a massive problem since I had to get into their flats to test each of their smoke heads.
Besides, my hire van needed a serious clean up as it was turning into a total mess.

Stumbled across your channel while searching for 'Fire Alarms', then subscribed. Thoroughly enjoying it. I'm retired now (living in Thailand), but from 1983 through to 1998 I worked primarily with fire alarm systems. It was a fascinating job with regard to the places I visited and areas of well known buildings the general public never get to see, plus stacks of overtime. One of my most memorable times was working for Honeywell, from 1990-94, installing and commissioning the fire systems at One Canada Square, Canary Wharf. I had the pleasure of demonstrating and handing-over the whole thing to the district surveyor too. The smoke detectors at the top of the lift shafts made for some fun memories. Good job, Thomas! 😎

I noticed that you were testing each zone on its own. On those Fike panels, if you set zone '00' into test it will put all zones on test. May save you accidentally setting the fire alarm off properly in the future ;)

Interesting foray into British fire alarm maintenance. Interesting that you need a tool to remove those smokes. I like your philosophy on sounders, too. Back in the day here in the US (up until about the 1970's), each floor would only have one or two horns, but they would be super loud. If you were close enough, it would make you jump, but if you were too far, you'd only hear it as a loud hum.

You should always use a vacuum (or a 'Hoover' if you prefer) to clean the detectors. You won't blow dust in to the detectors labyrinth that way. Thanks for a great channel.

Did the F.I.A alarm course a few years ago did parts 1 & 5 and found it very interesting, also did the B.A.F.E extinguisher course ... wow who'd have thought there was that much to where to put extinguishers, and how to test them and recharge them and everything in between. 10 on the course I was on 6 passed.

Greetings, I do the same work here in Pennsylvania, USA. We have Fike over here, but it is really more for the suppression market here and no conventional fire alarm like you've got there. Worked on some Cybercat and Cheetah systems. Always good to see another competent alarm troubleshooter.

Used to be an alarm engineer, get a second hand kit on ebay just looked there's a few good ones for about 3-500 quid, no need to buy brand new especially if not your primary work. The solo heat detector batteries are very good still got an old school one about 15 years old that works fine and holds charge although you can be standing there a while waiting for it to heat but you mainly use the smokes anyway and the ones on there look much newer. Used to have a hairdryer in the bag just in case.

here in Ontario Canada, as long as the maintenance person has provided 24-hours notice, the landlord or his authorised contractor can enter the unit whether the tenant is home or not. The landlord would just simply give his contractor a key to the unit

Agree with plenty of sounders. When I was an alarm supplier I did a school and obviously much cheaper cabling/installation to have less sounders. Unfortunately the kiddywinkies cried when the alarm was tested so had to go back! More importantly if one fails you are more likely to have another nearby to maintain dB spec.

The idea behind the fire exit signage is because people panic in fire situations and don't tend to think straight, plus the running man and direction arrow are designed to quickly indicate the direction of the fire exit especially for none English speakers/readers. This was due to research done into previous fires.

Senco do some very small compressors. I've seen several installed inside Sustainer toolboxes for portability and protection when they're in the van. Might be worth looking into and putting into one of your Milwaukee connecting boxes. Alternatively, Bambi compressors are a little larger, but a lot, lot quieter, but with a price to match.

In response to the need for a mini compressor, u should just buy the leaf blower for what ever battery tool platform u r currently using , i bought a dewalt one for blowing of my patio n have found so many using for from blowing wood chips into a pile after drilling out studs to blowing dust out of dirty area where I need to work n dozens more .... think its worth a try n they are very compact n fit into a small tool bag

I like your channel Thomas. Keep it going. I just wonder. Here in the Netherlands we must have slow whoops as a sound for fire alarms and also in sync of them all. Cause the sound you have can be confused with burglar alarms and people don't know what to do or they stay still in there houses. Strange that regulation are so different per country. Also I we must have battery powered lighted signs like you put up as a sticker. The lighted signs must show the way where to go. You are doing battery lights and separate signs. Don't know if that's regulation. Like the show.

I totally agree with you about lower Sound Levels but more off the sounders. Some people don't understand that when there is a fire then the best thing to do is to remain calm but when you have sounders trying to make your eardrums implode, it actually causes more panic. Its a mind over matter thing. For example remember when you was a kid and your parents used to yell, You used to thing OMG now im in shit... Now if your parents spoke to you calmly for a bollocking then you wouldn't panic. Its the same with the alarm sounders. The louder they are, the more disorientated you become as the panic has already kicked in.
