I encountered systems with single stroke bells in my teenage years in middle and high school. I don't remember what the middle school coding was (I think March Time), but my high school was code 3. My Vo-Tech I think was also code 3. I think this type of bell sounds better on continuous or code 3, while code 3 or march time is good for single stroke. My post secondary tech school was really interesting too, it was a horn strobe system, but the building was very large (dormitories, dining, recreation, and classrooms in the same building). It was effectively an electronic version of what a coded pull did. Each zone had a code and the instructions were...if the code is for your zone you were to evacuate...otherwise you wait further instructions or general alarm. We had a general alarm once, but it was a PA announcement, not on the alarm system. We evacuated to the farthest area from the fire.

Even without the bells, the strikers are noisy.

I bet your parents grew up with fire bells when they were young. Fire bells are uncommon in the United States since the modernization of Horn Strobes from the 1990s. But they’re common in Canada.
