Test of an older Simplex 4208 system that has since been upgraded to a 4100 U. System is set to walk-test zero which means the horns sound 2 quick bursts when a zone is tripped.

Amazing those old horns are still there

Pretty neat! At the school I went to for kindergarten, they just tied a smaller newer panel into their old 4208 panel. The newer panel (which was a Simplex 4010, but I think they had a 4002 when I was there) was for duct detectors and basic controls, and the 4208 was for the old pull stations (break-glass 4251-30s) and heat sensors. They also had Simplex 4051 horns, but they were on 4050-80 light plates. Unfortunately early last year, the old 4208 was failing, and they just upgraded to a cheap new Fire-Lite system...
@GaryBeltz8 жыл бұрын
Do you know what devices were installed on Fire-Lite system or were all the old horns, pull stations, etc kept?
@ZakWolf8 жыл бұрын
They kept the existing pulls, but all the old alarms got replaced with SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes on adapter plates.

I'm afraid so. They seem to dominate the fire alarm market these days...

+Gary Beltz they've been installed all over my district starting last spring (2015) my middle school (replacing 9838+4903-9101s and U-MMTs) my elementary school (replacing 9833s on 2903-9101s) and another elementary (replacing MT 24 LSMs). Lucky for me, the alarms at my upcoming high school I'm going to aren't being replaced. They've kept the wheelock ns horn strobes but in addition added new Wheelock Exceders, but like the other schools, the initiating devices had been replaced with notifier NBG-12LXs and addressable smokes (and most recently, CO detectors).

Nice, the elementary school where I attended 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade had these horns, except on these RARE light plates (think of jtd321's Faraday plate, only flipped upside down without fire lettering on the sides of the plate only on the lenses). However, some of the plates had Wheelock MT-WM horn/strobes , one Wheelock AS horn/strobe in building 10, and one Gentex GOS horn/strobe slapped onto the plate w/ the horns disconnected (assumingely to replace dead horns). There were also Federal Signal 450D horns outside and in building 12 (w/ VALS strobes), Gentex Commander 2s in one room, and two in the cafeteria mounted WAY up high, and a mix of Wheelock MT-WMs (some on 2903 plates to replace broken horns) and one Gentex GOS outside. Pulls were FCI MS-2s replacing old Faraday pulls. When I was attending I think the panel was an Autocall AutoCommand II replacing an old Faraday panel (the school was built in the late 1970s early 1980s and was expanded around 1988), but that panel was replaced when they put the new building in (which was finished in 2007) with a Notifier NFS-3030. The new building has Gentex Commander 2s and NBG-12LX pulls. The whole system is due to replaced soon.

Those light plates you mentioned probably WERE the Faraday light plates, with the lens flipped upside-down. They could be installed that way.

What is the name of your job? Also, do you wear sound proof headphones? And, How did you become interested in your job?

I think they get used to it after a while. When Twoplyboy still had his videos public he said that he never used earplugs and got used to the sounds of the alarms. When doing a test like this however you're not subjected to the noise for long enough that it would cause ear problems.

I work as a field inspector for Simplex. My intrest in alarms and electronic systems is what sparked my interest early on.
@safetech8 жыл бұрын
Not always but some places I go like large loud factories I wear ear plugs. Not because of the alarms rather the high level of ambient noise in the facility. As for the alarms I'm used to them for the most part.

Now i know in the video the 4208 was still there. But when they upgraded to the 4100 U did they replaced the old horns or did they ended up keeping them?
@safetech8 жыл бұрын
This video was after the 4100 U was already in place. Yes all the horns are from the old system.
@GaryBeltz8 жыл бұрын
I'm actually surprised they are allowed to keep the old horns since the system upgrade would be considered a building upgrade and usually if you upgrade one part of the system the rest has to be brought up to code as well. None of those horns looked like they had strobes nor did it look like any remote strobes were placed by them. Wouldn't that be considered an ADA violation?
@safetech8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Beltz There are grandfathering clauses in place for pre-existing construction with functioning equipment therefore no further upgrades were nessecary being the old stuff worked. Same concept applies to your question about the strobes.

***** only problem is what if there are deaf people attending this school?
@safetech8 жыл бұрын
+Gary Beltz I agree with what your saying however being these devices are grandfathered the facility isn't required to pay the expense to change them.

just one question... what's the purpose of a walk test?
@GaryBeltz8 жыл бұрын
Basically it allows the technicians to "Walk" around the whole system making sure the notification appliances horns, speakers, bells, etc sound but without causing a huge disturbance. It's typically done when places are busy but they still need to make sure the devices sound or if the tech is there by him or herself otherwise they have one tech at the panel while another one or more techs go around the whole system testing each pull station, smoke detector, heat detector, and so on.
@ZakWolf8 жыл бұрын
I remember when they did a walk test at the school I went to for kindergarten (when I had a summer program there before starting middle school), a pull station (mostly Simplex 4251-30s) or duct detector test station (2098-9806) would be activated via key, the alarms in that zone would go off for a second, then silence, and the initiating device would be reset. Most of the alarms were 4051+4050-80 horn/lights, and they were LOUD (I remember the technician putting his clipboard over the alarms in a few hallways to try and muffle the sound.) At that time, they had a Simplex 4004 system tied into an old 4208 panel. I'm not sure if 4208s were capable of a walk test, so I'm betting it was the 4004 handling that.
