In my opinion that was the Attitude Era... New Generation Era wasn't long. From mid 1993-Fall 1996. Enter Attitude Era very late 1996-Mid 2002. Ruthless Aggression Era Mid 2002-2008

Reason why I say the Attitude Era started in late 96 is because WCW and ECW were basically already in the Attitude Era. As they were more for adults, less cartoony and more realistic. In late 96 on Raw, Austin broke into Brian Pillmans home where Pillman pulled a gun out to shoot Austin. If that's not Attitude Era like, I don't know what is.. Eventually Stone Cold and The Rock would become the Attitude Era themselves. And once they both left in mid 2002 along with several other reasons, then it was the beginning of a brand new era.

I'm going to cover some amazing No Mercy mods soon that may be the closest ting we get to a remaster or sequel but the real thing will never happen. I think the Day of Reckoning games on GC are the closest thing to a spiritual sequel to No Mercy or at least mechanics wise.

I know No Mercy's praises have been sung enough but it's still frustrating that no wrestling game since has come close to putting out a game that casual/non wrestling gamers can pick up and play with minimal instruction (A is grapple, B is strike - tap for weak moves, hold for heavy moves - R blocks and reverses) while serious wrestling gamers can enjoy its depth and put together satisfying matches. The Smackdown vs Raw/2k series is grossly underrated in its potential for working amazing matches with though and I think that stems from only being good if you're playing against someone else who treats it as a platform for working entertaining matches rather than trying to win by any means. No Mercy couldn't be exploited in that way while SvR/2k is pathetically imbalanced with some moves being way shorter than others without being weaker to compensate, as just one example. When I was at my height, I 'worked' the most impressive wrestling matches I've seen in any game outside Fire Pro (equalling Fire Pro in many cases) - and by worked I mean trying ultimately to win but doing so by building to an entertaining contest with ebbs and flows. You can't do this without a dance partner who shares your philosophy though, and that pretty much required joining a clan. I had so much fun doing that though, it's just maddening that the games never became all that they could and were always marred by braindead design flaws that wouldn't be addressed because making a flashy looking trailer was top priority. I stopped buying those games after three years out of disgust at how little was improved each year - they don't deserve to still exist after so many cash-grab iterations but too many people will buy them anyway (or have their parents buy them).
