Fire Truck Crashes At House Fire

Yesterday at 2:36 pm PBCFR and PBGFR (C shift) Responded to reports of a residential structure fire. When Engine 14 and tender 14 arrived, they confirmed a small fire in the garage. However, when engine 14 was pulling into the drive way, the engine took too tight of a turn and crashed into the drainage canal. All 3 of the crew members on board reported no injuries. The fire was quickly knocked down using a line from the tender. After the fire was completely put out, an integrated tow truck was successfully able to pull the engine out. (Sorry for the lack of clips of the tow truck pulling the engine out my phone was about to die) Thank you to the crews for being extremely nice as usual!
Full Dispatch: Battalion Chief 19, Battalion Chief 61, Engine 14, Engine 18, EMS 19 (EMS captain) Ladder 61, Rescue 18, Rescue 65, Special Operations 19 (spare) Squad 19, Tender 14, Tender 22 (Canceled before arrived) After the fire was put out, Dispatch added Apparatus technicians 17 and 18.

@@85square It's just what happens when a rig is involved in any kind of accident. Driver gets tested for drugs/alcohol. Standard operating procedure pretty much.

I drove a ladder truck for 10 of 26 years on the job, saw this happen twice in my time. You have to swing those babies out to get in those narrow driveways. Looks like the Engine will survive. No sense in beating the driver up, I'm sure he/she is already sick about it. They will certainly go on to be a better operator because of this experience.

On this style of cab-over apparatus, the front axle is actually a little bit *behind* the driver. This means it is very easy to start the turn too soon-you need to learn to pull well into the intersection before you start your turn, and in this case, make the turn very sharply. Sounds like a new operator... they'll get it right from now on.

That's not a crash. That's what happens when turning in to a small gate. My propane delivery turn did this twice. I'll widen the gate now. Glad that house was close enough for the other trucks to take care of the fire.

That siren and the LEDs on the rear of that Tahoe are clearly meant to be installed on either and ambulance or fire truck. They are both noticeably too big on an SUV, and look out of place. The battalion Chief clearly had experience as an engineer and can't get enough of Q siren and equipment typically installed on larger vehicles

Oops! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Seriously, my oldest son is a volunteer firefighter (21 years). We live in the rural south and while they are a well equipped station….I’m sure that he would be envious of some of those trucks. He would probably love to operate them too. 👍🏼👍🏼

Ya more than likely or they knew a lot were coming so they tried to scoot the big butt and behind into the driveway help them out if anyone was in there and get them out then spray it down with water even though u shouldn't because water can actually spread it but u can do a fire out outside your house and pour grease in it when it's not hot but it's going slowly and u can actually stop it.

Love the use of he rotator on the 60 ton wrecker. Pulled the engine right out of the ditch. The engine is repairable as the frame can be straightened. Seen much worse brought back into service. Engineer/driver didn't swing it either.

Diggin that squad! The truck can be fixed/replaced. That’s why you have insurance. As long as nobody gets hurt and you hold the motto “everyone goes home.” It’s a good tour! Knowing your first due is key. I can say stuff all day, but at the end of it, none of us were there. We don’t know why it happened, but it happened and everyone walked away.

I just found this video today. I didn't thoroughly read all of the comments about this incident, but I noticed something that really stood out as a major problem. In the first part of the video, I saw many of the fire apparatus responding with emergency lights but no siren. Most states require the use of both to lawfully be an emergency vehicle. How do you expect drivers to yield when you are not properly using all of your emergency equipment to warn them? As a police officer for over 30 years, I saw more than my share of crashes involving emergency vehicles where the emergency equipment wasn't properly used. This also creates a major liability problem for the department and the county if this causes a traffic crash since they would not be designated as an emergency vehicle. Most new fire apparatus have cameras onboard to record their negligent actions. It is not an excuse when there is light traffic in the area. Regardless of the traffic conditions, properly use your equipment!

I kept wondering why some many units when you don't see even a hint of smoke until 7:30 into it. Seems like they would have wanted to dump the water out of the tank before lifting to save torque on the frame. Also, them are some mighty clean turnouts those guys are wearing. They all look brand new.

@@nickeustace9495 seems like you have no clue what you are talking about. 🙄 They have a set response to a report of a fire. They never know what they have until they get there. Units will be released as soon as possible. Then, in this case you see what happened, so it was better to have the additional units on scene, in case they were needed.

Just my opinion…the roto ray is the most overrated piece of emergency lighting ever. Yes, it looks cool and gives the apparatus a nostalgic East Coast look, but as an attention getting device it just doesn’t cut it compared with modern high intensity LED light bars, or even a set of Federal Twin Sonics from the 70’s.

@@zyglo9826 I think they look silly and they do not add much increased warning for all the commotion. I live in Illinois and I can't think of any Department that uses them. (I am sure there are that do...I just haven't seen any.) It is mainly an east coast thang.

How many units do they normally send out to a "small fire"? I realize that they don't really know how big it is until they arrive on scene, but that response looked like massive overkill. Round here in California you would likely have gotten one engine.

"Crash" is an overblown description. It fell in a ditch. Yes, once it went in, it leaned against the pillar, but it was not a crash.

Know that this may be a strange question, but instead of having to wait for the tow truck to arrive, since they had so may of them alread on scene, couldnt they have maybe used one of the fire trucks to see if that could have pullled it out of the ditch while the tow truck was still on its way????

Firefighter and army recovery specialist here, i wouldn’t use an apparatus to try and pull that free. More than likely what would have to happen is them drain the water tank and use the crane of a heavy wrecker to lift the ass out the ditch then use a winch to put the axle back on solid ground

Reason being is you want to have a stronger lift/pull capacity, plus a safe buffer, to do a recovery operation. With the trucks weighing roughly the same, you wouldnt get the force needed to overcome pulling it out of a muddy ditch

Now that's not a real crash...I saw a pumper unit crash into a Ford Explorer about 10 years ago. I was stuck in traffic, pulled over on the shoulder (accident ahead on a state highway), and someone two cars ahead decided to turn around (extreme impatience during the evening rush hour), right as a responding fire truck came through. They T-boned the Explorer and I got to see a fire apparatus briefly get all the wheels lifted up into the air and bounce back down (!). The lady driving the Explorer was extremely lucky to not have been injured or killed. I found out later that someone I knew from church was driving the apparatus, and the accident put the unit out of service for 3 months. And the Explorer driver lost her license, after being cited for failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle (apparently she already had a bunch of points against her license 🙄).

It was most likely because it was on an open road, it may not be an easy fix, the under part of the truck got pretty damaged and the whole back side of the truck kinda shifted.

Just about every department by me is mandatory if your lights are on so is your siren. Only exception is late at night in residential with like zero traffic. But also, if you noticed one truck didn’t even have all of its lights on. Most systems won’t let turn on the siren unless all the lights are on so it’s kind of a fail safe but yea daytime, mandatory. Can be very hard to see lights during the day sirens are there for a reason. If people complain about it the deserve a delayed response next time they call. EDIT: ok I did notice later that one truck had old halogen strobes so the camera may have not caught it because of the flash rate:frame rate.

As a bus mechanic where the steer axle is behind cab, should’ve drove a tad bit further out, but then again it looks like the driver was also trying to prevent the possibility of driving over the poorly placed hose that should’ve been closer to the right of the entrance unless it was placed after

There’s a lot of flex in the frames of trucks. Too rigid and they break. Likely nothing hurt at all with the frame.

Our town has an all volunteer fire department. Fire calls are always the best opportunity to clean the tavern.

Nice video. However.. it seems that all of these trucks are in really nice shape and such.. so, I can't get past seeing the 'apparatus technician' vehicle- which I assume is basically their own mobile mechanic (I have never seen anything like this before..) ?

This is a VERY well funded department in south Florida. Very many departments have on call mechanics here in Florida. If an emergency vehicle is taken out of service it poses a danger to the public and cripples response times.

My Dad was a fire Chief in Warren Pennsylva, but the first couple years drove the firetruck, around Christmas he got a seven man tubgon? anyway he crashed into a tree, broke his leg pretty good, we we were allowed to hang around the fire station,He got alot of ribbing 😀
