@Arthur Brown Japanese swords were usually defined by length. Below 1尺(30.3cm) would be a 短刀(tantou) which literally translates to short blade and below 2尺above1尺would be a 脇差(wakizashi) etc etc. both katana and tachi(太刀) are above 2尺 but tachis have deeper bends, as well as some being completely straight. But there really isn’t a definitive line between them. However katanas are sheathed with the bend facing upwards, whereas tachis are sheathed bend facing downwards. So when you unsheathe a katana your palm is on the inside but when you unsheathe a tachi your palm is on the outside. Unlike Europe where all swords were just called a sword or a long sword or a short sword until the 17th-ish century in Japan people did have different names for each type. Sorry for my bad English

I believe the 1st view of modification to rifles used by snipers was during the Crimean War. Rifle technology for that time was leaps and bounds and someone called D.Davidson managed to take an optical sight and stuck it to the Enfield rifles and were given to marksmen but because it was fixed and being in the 1850s, it was unreliable in spotting anything far as it offers just a slight magnification and that's it. It works in sniping someone beyond normal visual range but not ranges that we'll see later on during the Boer War. Speaking of the Boer War... What many people don't realize that the art of sniping in the modern stage isn't from WWI but it actually predates WWI and that's the Boer War. Both sides had excellent rifles with the new-age smokeless powder with the Boers being supplied by the Germans with the new Mauser 1895 whereas the British were using the Lee-Metfords. Rifles aside, the British actually had an upper hand as they had a bunch of amazing scouts (Which would later be the reason why most scouts would be trained exclusively as marksmen or snipers being lumped as "Scouts" too) which would be formed into a unit called the "Lovat Scouts" which was under command of Lord Lovat Simon Joseph Fraser himself with the assistance of American adventurer Major Fredrick Russell Burnham. They countered the Boer's scouts and even became the 1st unit ever to don ghillie suits into battle which was later broadcasted by war correspondents that were there thus the usage of ghillie suits as a cloaking device was invented there. That's not all. Because of all these sniping and countersniping activity was going on during the Boer War, many nations took notice and the Germans themselves took notice and placed sharpshooters with precise weaponry as their primary. When WWI happened, these German snipers wrecked havoc on the French and Commonwealth troops. Even the British were not thinking straight that the Germans were using snipers to great effect when they saw men falling by accurate shots, thinking it was pure misfortune that a guy was getting drilled by a well-placed headshot till they found scoped rifles in captured German trenches and forward positions. That sent panic across the French and British lines till someone called Hesketh Prichard who has been a correspondent for the Boer War petitioned up to the British High Command for him to start a sniper school and teach the marksman the skill he had learnt and also the techniques he saw being used by both sides during that said conflict and boy, what a job he did. He revolutionized how snipers will be fighting and even taught the British snipers of using tricks like the "paper mache" technique, mirror trick and the "shooter & spotter" combo. After the war, he published his book, "Sniping in France" in 1920 and it became the backbone of all sniper schools to come during WWII and it's still being used today.

there were the whitworth rifle using confederate snipers in the american civil war, who reportedly used their rifles to kill union generals from across the battlefield
@MrLolx2u
@MrLolx2u 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcusborderlands6177 The Whitworth rifle did have scopes but as mentioned, the 1st usage of such scoped weapons was during the Crimean War and the Whitworth succeeded it. It is regarded by many as the 1st actual sniper rifle being purposefully built to be a sharpshooting rifle with precise accuracy. Despite all that being said, the Civil War was still not a place where we see the modern snipers being born from. With the Confederates having the Whitworth and the Union having their already accurate Sharps, both sides have amazing sharpshooters like the Union with the Berdan Sharpshooters led by Hiram Berdan. Scopes were placed on rifles during these period already but with it being poorly made and highly obtrusive and waaay overpriced for a poor army like the Confederate, many of theses said rifles used iron sights as their basis for sniping and it still works well enough. It wasn't until the Boer War where telescopic sight technology really improved and saw usage on both sides for the British and Boers into great effect that was later adopted by the Germans who was keeping watch on the conflict all along and used what they had learnt from the Boers and British alike into great effect against their adversary during WWI when their enemies wern't prepared for it. Boer War was the one that taught everyone the techniques of sniping while WWI was the one that spawned the modern variant of sniping while polishing the practices from the Boer War.

@@lemons1559 an assault rifle is purely a gun with a select fire mechanism which is a government term not a military term(not exactly highly specific either), I think it’s fair to say that from a military perspective assault rifle is slang for a machine gun and not a technical term. Assault scope is 100% not a real term and reflex sight is just shorthand or slang for reflector sight, a battle rifle is a rifle that is semi auto and typically fires a larger caliber while also being longer than modern service rifles an example being the Mk 14 EBR. Battle rifle is a proper term used to differentiate between modern service rifles and service rifles that wouldn’t be out of place in the 40s

i like how enlisted has no scope glint. of course the camera will show you the general direction but really the most effective way to deal with snipers in enlisted is to use a sniper unit of your own, get a good position and watch the direction you were killed from and wait for movement.

I took a role in a game as a full time camper sniper where i would lay a trap on the road in a form of a vehicle and nobody can resist taking a unattended vehicle because they are very rare. I will be sometimes laying in one spot for 1,2,3 and sometimes 4 hours waiting for a victim or victims. Im usually located far away 200-300m deep into the woods with ghillie suit and Barrett M82. I never shoot unless target is standing and im forcing them to stand by locking my car which forces them to lockpick and while lockpicking they need to stand still. Thats when i shoot the lockpicker. If he have a friend,i wait for his friend to get behind the wheel in their vehicle (if they have it) and then kill him once he is behind the wheel because it takes 3-4 seconds to start up and get moving which is more than enough for 2-3 shots but its usually one shot in the brains. After that i check my surroundings and if everything is clear i go out and loot whatever i can and steal their car.

I'm very happy to see this video. It's exactly the kind of content I was hoping I would get with the series - using games as a jumping off point to talk more about the real world and history. Then again, I'm the kind of person who enjoys Shadiversity's video game castles series, so that probably tells you something.

I think that the first true designated snipers coming about during the First World War is certainly true regarding combat on land. However, in the age of sail, the very best marksmen among Marine units would be given specialist training to mark out and shoot officers aboard enemy ships, and would be issued with long rifles rather than the typical musket and bayonet. I think they make a pretty good case.

Sniping in Hunt:Showdown is the perfect balance between patience and arcady style gameplay - standing 300m away waiting for the perfect shot is shockingly viable with only needing to account for bullet velocity. 11/10 reccomend Hunt:Showdown

I think it would be interesting to watch Jonathan react to a better video of arma 3. The video he previously reacted to poorly reflects how most people who are interested in military simulation play the game. I think Arma nails Military simulation in many ways. The huge map for example makes for a great platform to simulate sniping, logistics, air strikes, transport, and firefights. The distances are realistic. And I haven’t even mentioned game mechanics like weight, fatigue, injuries, and ammo management yet. I’d really want to see Jonathan take another look at it, I love his commentary on these videos. :D
