AK's actually exist, in Fallout 1 and 2 the assault rifle is Called in the description ''AK-112'' which was considered outdated by the great war
@tsarfox3462

Lies and deception. AKs are and will never be outdated. On a more serious note, Bethesda did some retconning with the lore so they might not exist as of Fallout 3 or NV. It's also possible, albeit unlikely, that the gun just never made it to the US and only exists in Russia. However, the "hand-made rifle" in FO4 Nukaworld is definitely an AK so it's back.

BR55/BR85 = XM8+FAMAS M6 Magnum = It's like we adopted Desert Eagle as primary sidearm instead of 9mm/.45 pistol. SRS99 = Very NTW20 South African but in semi-auto and 14.5x114mm is overkill but its the only way to stop enemy with energy shield. Plasma Rifle = At first I thought it was plasma machine pistol/smg. That seems to be the intent, as Miss Brown directly mentions it to you the first or second time you talk to her. The problem is you need to buy the plans off her and at that stage of the game you don't have enough caps. By the time you do come back from jolly adventures with your bag of caps you are starting to be fully decked out with all the 'real' guns. So... yeah. I think they stuffed up. The Junk-Jet in F4? Same problem. You find it doing the Brotherhood story line but at a stage where you are probably about level 10 and again starting to get your own cool weapons. From my understanding the divergence occurred right after world war II and significantly impacted the creation of transistors among other things I believe towards the beginning of the Great war that led to fallout vacuum tubes barely became a thing and as well as the divergence being a thing there's evidence pointing that it goes further back even to Lincoln's era as there is a recording of Lincoln's voice. There is evidence of multiple divergent points in fallout universe making it more on par with a parallel universe with slight changes here and there rather than a completely different universe happening at one point

If taking into account Mothership zeta the divergence goes back a very long way, with the Zetans having taken people for centuries. I wonder if the combat shotgun could work if you thought of the magazine as being a device that feeds into what would effectively be the tube magazine beneath the barrel of your typical semi-auto shotgun. If you had a gas piston that served to cycle the drum as well as to ram cartridges into the under-barrel portion of the magazine and then also had the mainspring in the stock, it could theoretically work if the ejection port was a little larger and if there was a place for the bolt to go. It'd be a weapon that you'd probably have to clean/repair often, but that fits with how it is in the game.

The divergence is mostly based on the later development of transistors and a parallel path of atomic power/weapons. The closer you get to the point of that divergence (about just after WW2) the less noticeable the changes. Butterfly effect and such. The further forward you go, the more those various differences compound and snowball into further and further differences through different circumstances creating different chances/opportunities and thus moving along further divergent paths.

It probably worth pointing out that the MIRVed Fat Man launcher is not MIRVed but rather IST MRVed. MRVed missiles (simply standing for Multiple Reentry Vehicles) like the Polaris A3 or UR-100K simply scatter there multiple warheads in a pattern, hopefully bracketing a single target with multiple warheads. MIRVed missiles, like the Poseidon C3 or the Minuteman III have a 4th stage or Post-Boost Vehicle/Warhead Bus, essentially a small spacecraft, which carries the guidance system and warheads, and maneuvers and ejects said warheads one-by-one onto different independent trajectories, providing the ability to hit multiple targets with the same missile (depending on cross-range footprint, with Poseidon with a full load of 14 warheads having a range of 1800nm essentially zero cross-range footprint, a range of 2500nm at a cross-range footprint of 150nm with 12 warhead, or a range of 3000nm and cross-range footprint of 300nm with 6 warheads) and/or the ability to hit the same target from multiple directions at once. It should be noted that this capability was fairly revolutionary, enabling the inclusion of many "marginal" targets in SIOP which would previously have been untargeted due to lower warhead numbers and the inability of multiple-warhead missiles to hit multiple targets simultaneously.
