Lest I unintentionally mislead people on what the 'M' stands for in M1, M16 etc, it literally stands for 'Model', not 'Military'. They are 'military models' by default but the letter = Model just as it did pre-1930s i.e. Model of 1928, Model of 1911 etc.

To give an idea of how desperate Sony was to fix The Order 1886 at the last minute, they literally had everyone at SCEA HQ in San Mateo (including call center mooks like me) provide input, one-by-one, on what we thought they could do to make The Order a more "complete" experience for the consumer. This was just a few months before release, so none of our input was actually feasible, but they were DESPERATE for ideas to avoid the backlash they ultimately received.

Honestly I would’ve played it at a discounted price if it didn’t end on a cliffhanger that’ll never be resolved. It was compared to Ryse Son of Rome at the time, which was an Xbone game that also had a reputation for being just a graphical showcase with shallow gameplay and short length, but I enjoyed it for what it was because I like the Rome aesthetic and it actually concluded its story (which I also thought was decent, even if absurdly historically inaccurate). I would enjoy The Order 1886 as well for similar reasons since I also do love the Steampunk meets Gothic Horror aesthetic, but the game’s story not being complete will forever keep me away from it.

Some of this is because we've moved to live reaction rather than me pausing all the time - it's easier to miss stuff. Dave's knowledge is absolutely increasing all the time though and he notices stuff more as a result :) As for me getting less formal, it's a case of audience expectation. Most 'expert reaction' stuff is intended to expose a serious scholar type to something not at all serious to see how they react. Doing this every single week for two years means I know what people want/like and feel like I've earned the right to be less formal :)

Thanks for mentioning the trigger discipline thing. Most people dont know the '4 rules of gun safety' were codified AFTER WWII. Just look at any training film or real footage from before then, boogerfingers on bang hooks galore! It takes me out of historical films/media when characters are doing the low-ready sling and have their fingers laid on the side like theyre holding an AR. You can tell immediately that a modern weapons instructor did the consulting and training.

My pet theory is that Korea and Vietnam introduced it due to the rising value on individual human life and the use of conscripts (probably following the experience of loss of life outside of combat in WW2). I haven't done any serious research on it but we know that by Vietnam it was being drilled into recruits.
@sergeantbigmac
@sergeantbigmac 5 ай бұрын
@@jonathanferguson1211 Thank you for your insights and confirmation on this, ive noticed the same. Definitely the norm in most militaries by the Vietnam war era, but I have a suspicion that experiences during WWII or even before led to adoption of new training even right after WWII when there was finally time to analyze doctrine by military leaders. But doctrine takes time to test and adopt. People have gotten strangely hostile when Ive broached this topic before. I think any criticism of people in the past no matter how valid or academic really irks some folks. Makes productive discussion more difficult than it needs to be.

@peterclarke7240
@peterclarke7240 5 ай бұрын
Apparently not. Just been doing a bit of digging, and "straight finger" trigger discipline wasn't officially taught until the early 80s (commonly attributed to Jeff Cooper, as was the 4 rules. I'm actually guessing that the militarie never bothered because drill sgts were there to scream at anyone who messed up. But the changes in the 80s were due, I suspect, to the explosion in popularity of military-style weapons in both law enforcement and, most importantly, civilian hands. Suddenly you had loads of people with full-auto rifles who had no formal training, and no-one watching them, so gun safety and trigger discipline suddenly became VERY important. That's just my little hypothesis, though.

I was researching late 19th/early twentieth century sporting weapons for an RPG, and though I'm not working from memory I seem to recall there were a number of three-barreled hunting weapons. But none of them were just shotguns - they were either two shotgun barrels and a rifle, or two rifles and a shotgun. The theory being that sometimes you'd find a target of opportunity and/or an angry predator and need a quick shot with the other type of weapon.

That M85 Automatisch looks more like the PPD 34/38 than the MP-35 since it has a cutout for the bolt and charging handle on the left side and a drum mag too. It also had a tubular reciever and similar barrel shroud.

I would not say "more like". The band around the receiver at the front is there and the stock shape is definitely more MP-35. They may well have taken inspiration from it, but the drum being entirely different and games' penchant for left-side cocking handles means they could be coincidental. I'm inclined to believe that you have a point though and it's more of a mashup of both.

Plus there's tonnes of codec/radio calls regarding the weapons in MGS2/3 respectively & it'd be interesting to hear how accurate they are with their information. If you did wanna go through all of the calls it'd definitely be a longer episode I imagine but I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to see what Jonathan would make of them, especially considering they're early-mid 2000's games in comparison to a lot of the more recent titles you tend to check out. 👍

The Order 1886 is an enjoyable game, shame it never came with settings in order to disable the letterboxing or film grain because graphically it holds up really well I'd say.

Here I have a suggestion: The weapons of Timeshift. There's also concept art of the weapons that you can view in the main menu after you finish the game so he should get a look at that too since it offers some explanation on the weapon designs.

I remember when I first saw the trailer for this game and thought I was the coolest game ever. The storyline is just so flipping cool! After having played it multiple times it really is an amazing game. I wish we got a second one and Jonathan you truly are in for a treat. I wish I could play it again for the first time!

Everything about that game from the atmosphere and lore, the steampunk tech and worldbuilding, the grounded approach to monsters and alt-history Victorian era. Its biggest crime was it was basically a tech demo for the start of the last console generation and not a fully fleshed out game. But it was just plain cool and its been stuck in my mind more than it has any right to.

I haven't played the game, but design and atmosphere have always looked appealing to me. I like Gears of War for its gameplay and this game seems to share some of it. I think I'd be able to find it at dirt cheap nowadays. Would you recommend a playthrough?

21:01 Probably talking about the Carl Gustaf Recoilless Rifle, which is a Modern Shoulder-Fired Weapon, sort-of akin to a Rocket Launcher. The main difference is the fact that the projectile is Not self-propelled. It's loaded from the back, with the Backblast Cone rotating around the Longitudinal Axis of the Tube.
