When I went career (in 1979) we were on a 56 on 112 off, with 3 hours off during the shift. This was an attempt to comply with FLSA. We loved that shift. Every 3 months the shifts would rotate around and one shift would have 9 days off with pay. I'll agree that the FF schedule is something that the average civilian can't really grasp...but it is the most flexible schedule(s) you can have.....and it is the best job on the planet.

What you call the Cali swing we call the modified Kelly. Our department ran a 50 hour week and over the course of the year the modified Kelly shift averaged 56 hours per week, so we were paid 6 hours overtime each week. The department encouraged trades and would pay out unused vacation in November of each year since it was cheaper than paying overtime. You did not have to sell it back, but it made for a nice Christmas bonus. I retired in 2012 and a few years later they went to a 48/96 and have since gone back to the modified Kelly due to too much fatigue.

Are you sitting down for this? A few caveats, we're a quiet house (700 calls annually, no EMS), we are allowed meal breaks, so our days are actually 22 and 21 hours shifts, but we can get recalled for OT if called off our meal break. It works for us. I got to work Friday at 1700. I work until Monday at 0700. I get 3 meal breaks Saturday and 3 on Sunday. Monday Off, Tuesday On (only two meals on weekday shifts), Wednesday Off, Thursday On, Friday-Sunday Off, Monday On, Tuesday Off, Wednesday On, Thursday Off Friday on until 1700. Off for 7 days until it repeats. A 21 day cycle.

@@johnellwoodtaylor4769 many FDs here were already running 4 platoons anyway on 10hr day shift 14hr night shift, 4 days on/4 days off schedule. So when the unions started asking for 24hr shifts instead, the municipalities had to keep the same staffing numbers and just deliver a different schedule. That's how we get away with 4 platoons.

One thing I like about the firefighter work schedule is I can have a definite answer to when I'll be home. The 2 jobs I have right now, concrete and snow plowing, doesn't allow for that. So while it's a weird work schedule to most, to me it's a lot more structured. Thanks for the videos, I am a new volunteer, considering going full time after I get my training done, and have some calls under my belt to know for sure that's what I wanna do.

You left off FLSA. Work cycle. To determine if the Firefighter is untitled to overtime. If they choice a 28 day cycle you only get overtime after working 212 hours in the 28 days. The Kelly day can be used to reduce the over time the department pays out. And also 48/96 is becoming way more popular... I have worked all 3 shifts you talked about. There also are departments that have 4 shift's or work 10 and 14 hours shift in rotation..

Love the videos. I do have a long question (sorry). I am going through EMT now and plan to go through Fire, and become a firefighter. I just finished my first Fire Station clinical. I stayed professional, cleaned up, pitched in for dinner, stayed off the recliners, and stayed busy by looking through and getting familiar with the engine and truck. What are some good questions to ask the firefighters? I have two more 8 hour clinical shifts at a station by me this weekend, 3/20 and 3/21, and I really want to try and get as much information out as possible. Thank you for the hep!

Hi Aidan1753. From what you've stated it seems like you have a good grasp on the things you should and shouldn't be doing at the fire house. Every station visit will be different, some people will test you to try and find out what type of person you are (trying to find out if your a person they want to work with for the next 20+ years). Now I'm definitely not an expert on this topic but some good things to ask is: 1.) What are somethings you expect from a new probationary firefighter? 2.)What qualifications Is the department looking for?(this might make you standout from others if you have additional training or experience). 3.)Ask to do a mock interview(Practice makes perfect, plus they get to know you). 4.)What type of community service events does the department do?(Mostly try and learn everything about the department and the community they serve). 5.)Try and find a firefighter on or just finished probation(ask about the academy, and overall experience, how can you prepare yourself for this?) 6.)Ask able daily duties that need to be accomplished? Every department is different but find out what needs to get done around the station and do it! This also helps with interview questions about how you prepared. I'm sure there are way more and people may have better questions but keep up the good work and hope it works out.

As an Air Force firefighter, I worked a straight 24 on/24 off. You were assigned a Kelly day which could be any day, Sunday through Saturday. There were no options to work your K-day, you must be off that day, including the civilians. The idea was to keep you from working more than 72 hours per week. However if your K-day was Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, the following week was a Sun/Tues/Thurs/Sat in which you wound up working 96 hours that week. It didn’t matter to me as it was just another Fine Air Force Day.

12m mos in the airforce is possible??? if so how do i start the process and expedite it?? i was trying to be an army firefighter but all the recruiters brushed me off
@sjp35productions6
@sjp35productions6 9 ай бұрын
@@sevitaral Not sure what you mean by “12m mos in the AF. If you mean just a 12 month enlistment, no, there is no such thing. As far as Army recruiters go, it could be an issue of too many enlisted before you and were able to get a guaranteed MOS as a firefighter. When I signed up, my recruiter tried to get me to be AF Law Enforcement (sky cop) or Security Police. I told him I wanted to be a firefighter and would wait until an opening was available. I had to wait 5 months, but it was worth it. If your ASVAB scores are high enough for the AF, find your local recruiter and sign with them. Don’t let them put you somewhere you don’t want with a vague promise of ‘cross training’ at a later date. Make sure you have AF Specialty Code 3E7X1 on your paperwork. Finally, take a serious look at The Air Force. Everything about it is far and away better than the other services. Quality of life, food, and even when deployed, life is pretty good (I’ve got stories). Best of luck to you.

I find 24\48 superior to the cali swing. I have some surrounding departments around me that work the swing schedule and if they get mandatoried then they are working 72 hours straight, no ifs ands or buts about it. Also some of those guys are going to paramedic school while working for the department so you have to do clinicals and in class days in between the swing schedule and it BLOWS. Also since I work the 24\48, if I take 1 vacation day off, sick day or just a shift trade day off I have 5 days off in a row to myself. To do go on vacation or just rest. With the California swing schedule also if you're running calls all night you're going to be a zombie the next day and then the day right after that you're going back to work so it can be a pretty vicious cycle. With the 2448 at least you have two days off to recover

I worked 37 yrs in the California Fire Service.... the California swing schedule is more commonly called a 3/4 schedule. Our department worked 4/4-4/6 schedule. I selfishly looked at it as the best working conditions for this reason.... taking 4 shifts off (be it vacation, holiday or comp-time) you then got 17 consecutive days off. To utilize 4 shifts off with the 3/4 schedule, only got you 11 consecutive days off. But as you know with unlimited trades, call backs and mandates... it wasn't uncommon to spend 8-10 shifts straight on duty, then have 23-30 consecutive days off.

You didn't cover the schedule that a lot of departments here in Canada follow. 4 Platoons work 24hr shifts - usually 7am to 7am. In a 4 week cycle you work one of each day of the week. i.e. you work one Sunday, one Monday, one Tuesday etc. every month. If you work Sunday you'll work Wednesday. If you work Monday you'll work Thursday. If you work Friday you'll work Sunday and if you work Tuesday that's it for the week. The cycle repeats every 4 weeks.

You dont have 24/72? IMO it's the best schedule for firefighters. 42h/week. Good recovery time and not too long shifts. Used by almost every department in Finland.

It is a popular schedule in the North Eadt (US) Most department's that use this schedule previously worked 10/14's with 4 platoons. Vast majority of fire departments in the US, still ise 3 platoons or less.
@johnellwoodtaylor4769
@johnellwoodtaylor4769 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinscanlonsr1593 that schedule works great for busy stations. The problem is overtime… You have two shift changes every 24 hours that could have overtime as opposed to only one with a 24 hour shift. I know Pittsburgh shifted from 10/14 to 24/72 Because of overtime at shift changes.

24/48 is similar to 3 day duty section. you show up monday morning and you work until the end of the work day on tuesday. its about 34 hours... then you work a normal day wednesday and Thursday is a Duty day just like monday... and you get off work at the end of the day friday. Weekends are not work days ( unless your duty day falls on it ) so a friday duty day would end first thing in the morning saturday. a sunday duty day would mean your working an extra day that week.

So when you work 24 hours straight, what are you actually doing for those 24 hours? Do you have your own private dorm room/sleep quarters? I'd love to fight fires and I would actually enjoy job that is physically strenuous, but I'm not a particularly social person. And I feel like fire departments are very close knit or even cliquish?

Philadelphia has none of the scheduling you've explained which sounds awful (sorry). As far as working over 40 hours and it causing an overtime condition is not true in Philly. It's a 48hr work week with no overtime unless you volunteer. There are 4 shifts (A,B,C, and D platoons). Slang for the scheduling is referred to as "10s & 14s". Firefighters work 2 10hr. days (8am-6pm) with a 24hr. break and then work 2 14hr. nights (6pm-8am) after which they are off for 4 days. As an example, if one was to begin work on a Monday, your next shift would begin the following Tuesday of the next week, the next shift on Wednesday of the following week and so on. You are able to work overtime as long as it does not exceed 24hrs. Overtime may also be worked on the platoons' 4 days off.
