Actually, Adam Rupp is a mighty fine tenor, too, and is most likely carrying his share of the load here. He sings in "Helplessly Hoping", & in "How Great Thou Art"....and provides the crazy high notes at the intro of "Listen to the Music". And, yes, Adam Chance's voice is as smooth a Tennessee Whiskey.😉 Those last two notes? Sound just like a pipe organ.

Tim's breathy singing represents his part in the song...a soldier dying on the battlefield. He praises the camaraderie of his brothers in arms, while lamenting the sadness and futility of war. The wind sound was the only vocal percussion/sound effect from Adam. He was singing high harmony for most of the song.

I have always been a fan of this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome along with Chance's smooth baritone & loved it when all the guys were doing 5 part harmonies. Who would believe humming could sound so good. They gave it a very solemn feeling. I love that they don't overproduce their songs. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there. Tim has a 5 octave range so he can sing high tenor right down to the deepest depths. My husband suffers with extreme allergies all year long. Just worse in the spring. Hope you feel better soon.

One of HF's masterpieces. Dire Straits (Mark Knopler) wrote this in response to the Falkland War (early 1980s). And, yes, the lyrics are quite applicable to so many situations. We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms.

Written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits in the early 80s in answer to England's Falklands war. It's the story of a soldier on the battlefield who's been mortally wounded. His Brothers in Arms won't leave him as long as he's drawing breath even though it puts them in danger. This song, Dire Straits or Home Free, has never failed to bring tears to my eyes. This video depicts this perfectly.

I’m so sorry you have been sick. I worked for three allergy doctors for 14 years spring and fall was our big seasons here in Michigan! I’m as far north as you are south! Thank you for your service as a fire fighter! My lil brother is a policeman, now a chief of police, but when he was just a patrol cop he went on a house fire call, the owners were outside freaking out as their cat was inside the home. So my brave brother ran into a burning house to find the cat! When he brought him out he was half dead from smoke, in which case my lil brother gave this animal mouth to mouth and brought him back to breathing on his own! I am, and have been so proud of him too! ❤

This song is stunning! Dire Straits did this originally. It’s guitar driven where this is voice driven. It was about the Falklands War in the 80’s. Love Tim and Chance’s solos. They looked ghost like in the windows. Love your voice too….I bet you could get close to Tim in the morning! Feel better. Try Helplessly Hoping, In the Blood, Die a Happy Man, Delta Dawn. 😄

This is a masterpiece, for the composer and for the performance. You are hearing 5 part harmony because Adam is adding his lovely tenor to the mix -- he is likely providing many of those higher riffs. The harmonies are so tight, it almost sounds like an organ playing accompaniment. Dire Straits had this song, but a European (Finnish?) Had the arrangement that Tim adapted to Acapella. This was about the Faulkins war. Tim and Chance are the two being left behind, the other three are either chorus or previously passed. There is a three level tenor chord. Adam Rupp is the highest descant voice, I believe, as he is in other songs where he doesn't beatbox.

Home Free always pays appropriate respect in their covers--especially to the content! Their talent is amazing--and I LOVE their 5-part harmony❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️ Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥

This was written in 1985 about the war over the Falkland Islands. Dire Straits recorded it, and a Finnish group named Club for Five, another a capella group, covered it. Tim heard it and asked if Home Free could use their arrangement and got their permission. Adam Rupp may be doing a high tenor line, because he’s capable of doing it.

As for this song....I consider this Home Free's masterpiece. Mark Knopler lead singer of the British band Dire Straits wrote to honor the war dead in the Falklands War in 1982 between Argentina vs the United Kingdom, which was won by Britain in just 5 or 6 weeks, and led to the demise of the Argentine government a few months later....Nice singing voice brother

Loved your heartfelt reaction to these haunting lyrics (based on the Falklands War between the UK and Argentina in the 80's; originally by Dire Straits). Home Free never disappoints and they know how to get us in the feels. BTW another great 5-part harmony song Home Free upgrades that is often missed but I would put right next to this one in terms of quality and emotion is I Can't Outrun You. Chance takes the lead on the vocals and the video was his artistry and directed by him. Just wow! Add it to your list and we will be here to hear/watch your jaw drop again. 🙂

I feel for you. This video brought tears to my eyes with the lyrics. It is a cover, but it is totally different in tone and gravitas. Hauntingly beautiful and powerful. One of their more impactful. This is so hauntingly beautiful. I enjoyed your reaction to it, as it obviously was heartfelt. The original by Dire Straits is sooooooo different from this that when I went to listen to it I thought that I'd opened the wrong video. This arrangement was created by the Finnish group Club for Five. Their version is also on You Tube and worth a look. It is quite different from this one because it has both male and female voices and instruments. Another song that showcases Home Free's 5-part harmony is How Great Thou Art. Master class in harmony.

I agree, the Club for Five version is different because of the female voices. For me the all male sound of Home Free works better for this particular song. One thing that I miss from the Club for Five version is the bass drums that I interpret as heartbeats, of a man as well as of the fate of mankind. The drums can be heard in the version from the album, in the live version its not as prominent.

This is truly a HF masterpiece. May I suggest the following: “I Can’t Outrun You”- Chance lead, pure 5 part harmony, and Chance directed the video. “ End of the Road”- Rob lead, shared with Austin. We get R&B Rob on this one. It’s stunning how well they have done this. “Blue Ain’t Your Color”- Rob lead, shared with Chance, very Temptationsesque. “Champagne Taste ( on a beer budget)”- written by Tim, he has the lead, and it’s hilarious. I could go on and on, but I’ll stop here for now. By the way, much respect to you. There are firefighters in my family.

re: Tim and his hand when he is going to sing a low note ... I call that a "bass hand" and my son, who has been wanting to be a low bass like Tim ( and Avi and Geoff - the trifecta of awesome low basses), also does that. It's almost like it helps carry their voice down. I find it happens regardless of if they are using chest voice, sub-harmonic or any other sort of low bass technique.

Great review!! You really got the essence of the song! Here is what Home Free said about it: "The meaning of “Brothers in Arms” rings true across more than just when we’re at war overseas, but when we’re fighting amongst ourselves. When political and other divisions split us, we have to take a step back and remember that we always have more in common with each other than we have that is different. And we need to see all of our fellow human beings as the brothers and sisters we are, so we can live in a more harmonious society." So, based on their intent, and your accurate analysis, I feel you would do a good review of... Everybody Walking This Land kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5t4ZMxjrKjcdZc.html ...in which they cross the line your seemed to be resisting in your commentary. They speak directly, with no metaphors.
