I choose the phrase "realistic" over "accurate" in the title for a handful of reasons that I'm having a hard time articulating... It feels weird to say "accurate" about a bunch of fictional characters who 1) don't exist, 2) are being edited from their book canon, and 3) have multiple ways to interpret their genetics. And 4) we don't even know how cat eye color genes work, this shit ain't "accurate" LOL.
I'm a very pedantic person, if that wasn't obvious.
Anyway, I hope that any of my insane ramblings (here or in the video) make sense :)

@@khimkito9947personally i make her cream because fawn is usually seen in pedigree/purebred cats and i like to try and give myself less work genetic wise, but i think fawn does work out if you wanna make all the characters look accurate and is a smart choice i just like taking the oldest known parents of the family on each side, giving them alleles based on how they look, and just going off of that purely as is lmao

YES! As a genetics and warrior cats nerd, I have two sets of designs I draw for my favorite characters. One design is more realistic to cat genetics (while still keeping as close to book design), and the other is just what I like to see that character as for fun! My “genetics” design often is closer to the book description than my “fun” one! All in all, these are fictional cats, I’m gonna color them whatever color I want!

I like this kind of genetic theorizing where you try to figure out how to make cats as close to their canon/fanon appearances as possible, kinda like a puzzle! Genetics are a lot more flexible and complicated than most people think they are.

BIG agree!!! it bothers me a lot when folks doing this type of challenge change characters, not bc they want to but bc they feel like they HAVE to! these types of exercises are very much a puzzle to me, or like a big complicated math equation. me making this video 🤝animals at the zoo getting food out of puzzle boxes

I know nothing about genetics or what all the traits mean so I can't enter my characters genetics and find out what their babies would look like. I mean one of the characters had a litter from 3 father's. It's literally the only thing stopping me from finishing my warrior cats oc story, I have an entire lifetime planned out with these characters but GENETICS BE DAMNED I have zero idea wt I'm doing

It's also interesting on how DEVASTATED she would be when she eventually does snap and do what could be perceived as "evil" actions (though they're much more complicated than that) and that in her eyes, she would have failed at reclaiming her appearance (and yes, I know that she by this point knows she isn't related to tigerstar, but shhh she's known him as her grandpa for her whole life up to this point)

Fun fact about cloudtail's dad it was confirmed his dad is a white tom with blue eyes via the official family tree his name is Oliver. So they officially got that right genetically. 😅

Tawnypelt is another one who'd be very fun tbh. I had her in mind when I was making Tigerheartstar here so I have a good idea of what I want from her genetically, but I also have 2 different conflicting Tawnypelt designs in my head and I'd have to pick one :(

I can tell you immediately that Hawkfrost being a brown tabby with blue eyes is impossible. That goes for any of the cats that are not pointed having blue eyes.

@@littlehungrywarrior mmmm but blue eyes are linked to albinism, such as the pointed gene. I can't find any actual information on tuxedo cats having blue eyes, but if they can, it's very, very, very rare. I know I've never seen or heard of a cat without being pointed or solid white having blue eyes beyond 6 weeks old.

Tbh I'm not typically draw towards content involving "genetically accurate" warriors because it ends up coming across as a bit of a buzzkill imo, but this was SO fun to watch. You focused more on "how can I make this as true to the books as possible" rather than just going straight to saying it's impossible! Definitely looking forward to seeing more of this in the future!

seems like tigerstar's already the winner for next time, but for an out-of-the-box pick i'd love to see frostpaw's tree. there's all sorts of fun things going on in there what with curlfeather's curled ears and frostpaw seemingly being canonically mink.

I'm a little hesitant to cover characters from the new books since I haven't kept up with them, thus I'm not sure which characters ppl care about more + what parts of their appearances are more important...but those phenotypes do intrigue me. I'll look into it :3

I understand not wanting to do the genotype for Ivypool's kits because eewwww, but part of me wonders just because I wonder how obvious it would be that they're in🍞. "Who's Birchfall?" One of Dustpelt and Ferncloud's many children. Alternate backstory for Jake: Jake's breeders sold him for a little cheaper for not meeting breed standards. Idk if this is a thing that happens, but it makes sense in my head.

What a breath of fresh air! No hate to other people who have reworked the genetics on Firestar's family tree, but making him a ruddy tabby is such a simple and effective solution. And Sandstorm as a fawn tabby? Beautiful. Ivypool x Fernsong seems like a challenge, maybe I'll mess around with that later.

Actually had a black cat, but in the sun light, could see brown stripes in his black fur. The stripes were just so dark you could only see them while he was sun bathing.

This is so awesome!! I love cat genetics and Warriors so much- after seeing this, I went back and watched your whole cat genetics series, lol. Another cool idea for Firestar could be amber/russet/carnelian! He could start as the brown cat he’d be if Jake was orange, maybe looking a bit like fire, enough for Bluestar to take him in… but by the time he actually becomes Firestar, he looks completely like a flame-colored cat. Because we know essentially nothing about Jake and Nutmeg, they could absolutely have the right recessives for it, too!

oooo, Amber mirroring his character arc as he grows into himself :O cool.. if he was carnelian then he'd just be born "ginger" already tho lol. also, he'd have to be homozygous carnelian for the full effect, so unless Sandstorm also has it (possible!) Squirrelflight wouldn't have the full effect. hetero-carnelian leafpool wouldl be an interesting design.

This is so much fun! The Farquaad shenanigans are top-tier. I also like your take on Lionblaze-personally, I’m a fan of (black) golden, since many of my favorite designs for him have black stripes. Or I heard it’s called sunshine now? It’s breed-specific to Siberians, but hey, this is fantasy genetics anyway (I am also taking the free excuse to encourage folks to look up bimetallic siberians. No, that’s not a tortie! It just interacts weirdly with silver)

ahh yes, golden! wideband is a polygenetic gradient trait so it'd need at least one parent to have a ton of widebanding genes for lionblaze to get. lucky lucky, crowfeather doesn't display tabby ;) Oooh man, I've never seen bimetalic before...that's beautiful! thank you!

Cloudtails father is named Oliver. He is an all white short haired cat so cloudtails mom gave him long hair and his dad gave him most of the white, along with blue eyes.

I think Crowfeather’s family tree is one of the the funniest ones because on Leafpool’s side you’ve gotta explain stuff like Lionblaze being golden (not to mention they spent a whole arc thinking they were Bramblesquirrel kids which is even more improbable) and then on Nightcloud’s side you have like, Black Cat plus Black Cat equals Black Cat.

How many times have you rewatched this video? ... yes... I just love how you make the family tree, and I started making a cat oc family tree in a similar fashion. Just using generators where I don't have design ideas, and then looking through the family to see where the genetics could come from. I ended up with the first mink in the family thanks to generators and her parents carrying each point trait she needed. Also, I found out Somali and Abyssinian seem to be fairly similar, aside from Somali being longhair and Abyssinian being shorthair So the start of my cat oc family tree is someone's purebred Abyssinian who got loose and some tom got her pregnant. I'm having alot of fun mapping these genetics, as you can probably tell by my comment and the repeated replaying of this video

For ivypool i thought for a second your soloution was going to be that she was tortie, bit since shes high white all the orange just ~coincedentally~ ended up covered up. Love your soloution, but it makes me wonder could that even be possible? Great vid btw and one of the best takes on the trend - your knowledge does you well.

of course it's possible, look at the genes lol. nothing on this tree is impossible; that's why it's Firestar's realistic family tree, and not Firestar's "I made up a bunch of fake shit" family tree. edit: I seem to have misunderstood the question! apologies, it's answered below

@@littlehungrywarrior I think emmalately meant would it be possible for a calico to have their orange patches covered by white spotting so perfectly as to make them appear to not be calico at all I would assume yes. To quote you; "It's not impossible. Very unlikely, but not impossible" lol but I've only got a mild interest in cat genetics and I haven't seriously dabbled in a few years.

actually 🤓☝️ we know who are Crowfeather's parents, it's Ashfoot and Deadfoot (lol), and Crowfeather is smoky-gray (wiki info) with kinda-white face on one of the official art, not black, so with this retcon he can have a blue eyes

oh i know we know his family in the books, but they're not on this tree so we "don't know them" AKA their genes LOL. I don't give a shit about CF's family tree. Realistically, blue cats don't get as dark as Crowfeather is described, so black is his only real option. I didn't know his recent art shows him w/white... I don't like that :\ takes away his parallel to HL & BP. thnx for telling me about it tho! if someone decided to keep it they COULD give him blue eyes indeed...

oh man it bothers me SO MUCH when subtitles aren't accurate... I'll fully admit to missing small changes here & there between my script & what I ended up saying, but I change them whenever I catch them. I don't get why ppl think Deaf/hoh/apd folks don't deserve or won't miss what's being said; that's the WHOLE POINT of subtitles! I think the real answer is that they don't actually care about Deaf/hoh/adp folks and just do the subtitles bc they're "supposed" to. better than not doing them at all, but it pisses me off more than not doing them at all, if that makes sense.

On the warrior wiki, Oliver(Cloudtail's dad) is shown to be an all-white tom. His littermates are Nami: brown and white Livy: white and brown Taylor: gray(?) and white Zack: white and light gray(?) That would be a nice little backstory for the Erins to drop. Or someone to write about.

Loved watching this!! I feel like this as a mini-series on your channel serves as a helpful walkthrough of your gene videos and how they all work together! When you end up doing another, I'd love to see maybe Ferncloud's tree? I'd love to see how you figure out how Foxleap fits in there! That does being it back around to Birchfall though, so if you're looking for a more unconnected tree, maybe Greystripe and Millie's family? Millie doesn't have any other family in her backstory, so she'd be open for any sort of recessive gene manipulation needed to make things work (looks at Blossomfall)

Iam glad to get a possible theory on how Rustystar could maintain his appearance genetically, as pretty much every other genetically accurate warriors video has him as a brown tabby. I mean the entire Prophecy is about him being orange. Of course the Erin's kinda throw a monkey wrench into things in Pinestar's Choice, revealing that Jake's parents are crystal, a ginger She-cat with white spotting and mocha, a brown tom. I like you're theory better though.

I just started re-reading all the books (but in audio book form and I’m on the last book of power of three) and thinking back no, I don’t remember a mention of her having green eyes. I only read the first six books originally when I was in 6th grade lol and now I’m 24 so it had been awhile😂 Also, checking the warrior wiki they have never mentioned she had green eyes not even as a mistake. Their is a few fanart with Brightheart having green eyes to so maybe it was just one of those things where people drew Ravenpaw with purple eyes even though he like, obviously didn’t lol.

This was so much fun! You are by far the most knowledgeable person I’ve seen do this, which means you have more tools and tricks to make the characters look as much like their canon selves as possible. The back and forth up and down the family tree was also lots of fun, like a little puzzle, and you do a great job explaining and rehashing everything. I’m looking forward to the next one - whenever it comes out in the future. Tigerstar’s should logically be next, but I do hope you get around to Bluestar’s at some point.

I havent kept up with warriors books since I was a kid, maybe stopped just after the power of three series, but this popped up on my feed. What a fascinating video! I dont pretend to know anything about cat genetics but you're incredibly smart for learning about all this and writing up the characters in a way that makes sense. I had no idea how crazy Firestars lineage has been getting

Damn this plopped up randomly in my recommendations and I am not even a big warriors fan anymore, but I find genetics so fascinating. I still don't know too much about it, but while my best friend for example feels like, listening to genetics and realism throws away the fun of designing a character, I must say designing one while falling under the rules of genetics can be so much fun and it is like playing a puzzle game. Maybe I will look more into genetics of animals cause of this video, thank you! Also, I'd be really thrilled to see another video with Bluestars or Tigerstars family tree as you said! Keep up the amazing work, but take your time with it
