This black & white educational film is about the rubber made at Firestone Plants. Circa the late 1940s.
Title: RUBBER FOR INDUSTRY (:07-:22). Firestone Plant in Fall River, MA. The ship Taurus unloads its rubber and latex. An African map, Liberia. Basic material, liquid latex drips from a tree. A man moves rubber. Factory. Rubbers ar unpacked: neoprene, butyl rubber, nitrile rubber, reclaimed rubber, GRS synthetic rubber. Rubber is cut in the factory (:23-2:35). Factory workers. Rubber is carried by cranes. Chemists work in a laboratory on formulas. After raw material is loaded into a mixer, it is kneaded. Animation shows the process. Rolls blend the stock of rubber in a machine, a worker helps it along. Rubber is sliced. A worker takes a sample to have it checked to make sure it is correct. A hydraulic press steams the rubber. The rubber gets stretched (2:36-5:35). Stiffness is checked. Rubber is lifted by a forklift. After the mill batch is ok, the rubber is rolled to the desired thickness by a colander machine. The machine spins and works. Animation of the machine. A hand touches rubber. Processing rubber is by extrusion. Rubber stock spits out he, long rubber. Rubber comes out of a machine in a tube shape. A testing laboratory. Strength of rubber is tested, then the endurance. An electronic machine records loading rate and efficiency. Tires on hooks (12:44-14:48). Special resin for the belts to be dipped (14:49-17:01). A man works on a machine and places rubber on it. Its cut into rings, the rings are wrapped in fabric. The belts are then ready to be vulcanized. They are placed in a steel mold and heat is applied/ The belt can be notched in a special machine. A cylinder of rubber is removed (17:02-19:07). Belts are cut and checked for length. Automobile radiator hose is shown being made. Long rubber tube goes through an extruding machine. Emerges from the dye. Hose is cut to proper length. It is then vulcanized (19:08-21:00). Women sort. A hose is tested and then it breaks.A machine opens to show rubber. A man mixes rubber. Rubber is extruded and then molded. Rubber in a machine. Rubber products are shown at home and in the shop. In recreation and on the farm. A car's brakes and gas pedal. Tires. A bus goes fast around a track. Traffic. A tank. A rail car races by.
