not all specialties are as "flashy" (for lack of a better term), but equally important! Radiologists and pathologists are very very "underrated", too!

@@merdzky098 it's cool because they are all baseline doctors at the end of the day. Anesthesiologists are flashy to me because they are like masters of drugs, chemistry, medicine, keeping people alive, and using the body as a human biology experiment and chemistry set.

Glad you found this video interesting Sherry! Anesthesiologists can learn various types of nerve blocks for structures around the face, but from what I've seen, it's typically the ENT who will do those. At least at my hospital, the level of collegiality and collaboration between ENTs and anesthesiologists is very high (our department has co-authored several textbooks with ENT attendings) so there's a lot of teamwork. It's pretty cool and would be a fun video to make of an ENT surgery some day.

also any advice 3rd and 4th year? rn i’m mostly just focused on research and step 1 rn 😭

Hi there, for your M2 year the most important focus is doing well on Step 1 (obviously you know this). Once you hit 3rd year, focus on doing well throughout all your clinical rotations. I know that seems obvious, but the importance in anesthesia is that it shows you get along well with providers from all services. As an anesthesia resident/attending, you'll work with providers from all services so it's good to indicate you can already do this well as a med student. Your surgery and internal medicine rotations are particularly important because in a sense, the anesthesia knowledge base lies at the intersection of those two specialties. For the end of 3rd year / beginning of 4th year, definitely try to do at least two anesthesia rotations so you can really be sure that it's your career of choice! And not just for you-- this is important to demonstrate on the interview trail that you've spent enough time to prove to your interviewer that it's an informed decision. While I did a fair amount of research (because I enjoy it), I don't think research is necessary for anesthesia. Hope that helps!

Things only get better as you move along in your training. Obviously pre-clinical years are just a grind. MS3 is tough but at least you're with patients. MS4 is usually pretty great. Then PGY1 you're finally a doctor, and PGY2 you get to actually do anesthesia! That's as far as I am, and it's the best haha.

Hi George, great question. I'd say there are some characteristics that are uniquely important in anesthesiology as compared to other specialties. Those that come to mind are:` - Good communicator, specifically with surgeons and other members of the team in/around the OR - Calm disposition, particularly in the face of acute and severe problems - Sociable (at least for short periods of time lol), especially when it comes to quickly establishing rapport with a scared patient 10 minutes before they undergo a huge surgery Thanks for following along the videos and sharing them with your classmates! I was actually very interested in pursuing IM, but anesthesia won out because I enjoy the OR so much, love the opportunity to help nervous patients feel a little less worried before surgery, and I like the pace of anesthesia ("95% boredom, 5% sheer terror"). The concern your aunt has about call really depends on what kind of practice you'd like to do. You can find anesthesia jobs that require no night or weekend call, but of course you take a relative pay cut for that. Really depends what you're comfortable with. As far as midlevel practitioners, you should ask your aunt what she thinks about the growing number of NPs who are practicing hospital medicine. Midlevel practitioners are present in most fields, so anesthesia isn't unique in that sense. The bottom line is that if you love anesthesia, you should do it. Just my 2 cents!

Hi Jordan, yes I was actually able to get a decent amount of rest during the shift when I recorded this video. I usually have a pretty constant energy level during the day when I'm at work, but it's common for me to come home feeling quite tired. As far as caffeine, I always have a cup of coffee in the morning, and occasionally will have a 2nd cup in the afternoon if I'm on a 24-hour call. Thanks for following along with these videos!

Hi Michael, glad you found the videos helpful! In addition to having good USMLE scores, I think a great way of maximizing chances of matching as an IMG is to do away rotations at hospitals where you hope to match. I know that's hard with COVID right now, but any way that a program can get to know you (and vice versa) is helpful. Mt. Sinai anesthesia has had IMGs but I'm not sure proportionally how many. I believe there's a spreadsheet out there called Match a Resident that identifies programs that tend to take more IMGs. Hope that helps!

Hey Fouad, thanks for watching and commenting on my videos so consistently! I think that on average, anesthesia residents work fewer hours compared to surgery residents. However, we still work 60-70 (or more) hours per week, plus call once per week or more, which is not consistent with a lifestyle specialty IMO. As far as number of hours worked and number of call shifts after residency, that really depends on where you decide to work and how you negotiate your contract. I don't know a ton about that process, but it sounds like you can pretty easily negotiate to take less call/hours but that comes with a pay decrease. Really depends on the specifics of the job- it's hard to generalize across the entire field.

Hi Eloim, glad to know you're excited about applying to anesthesia! I appreciate the nice feedback. I think the majority of anesthesia programs take a wholistic look at your application, so Step 1 score isn't the only deciding factors, but all the other components of your application. I'd advise focusing your efforts on things you enjoy, whether or not they're directly related to anesthesiology. The program directors who will be interviewing you know that you're not just a future anesthesiologist, you're a person with interests outside of that. You'd be surprised how much non-anesthesia stuff came up during my interviews. Anyways, point is that you should do what you enjoy as far as research / volunteering / coursework etc. The specific things you should make sure to do are at least a couple anesthesia rotations to demonstrate that you've clearly gotten exposure to the field and have made a decision based on that exposure. Keep in mind that most people choose anesthesia late (3rd or even 4th year) so few people have CVs that are filled with anesthesia-specific stuff, unlike derm / ENT / ortho etc. Hope that helps!
