I would say as a WJ owner who is concerned about reliability. 1) Ensure battery is good. 2) Terminals are good and clean 3) Check inside rubber boot on drivers side door jam. Those wires inside are prone to breakage and cause so many drains in battery. 4) Check fuses. 5) On the 4.7, the passenger side valve cover is prone to leakage. 6) Check all front end suspension bushings/joints. Tie rod ends, Track Bar, Ball Joints, Control Arms. The infamous death wobble is no joke and can render you immobile or scared to drive it. Another thing is to ensure tire balancing, and alignment are done by a 4x4 shop. Doesn’t matter if you’re 2WD. They will know exactly what this jeep needs much better than anywhere else besides the actual dealer. 7) A/C blend doors are prone to failure. Shops will charge thousands for repair. Best choice is to remove glovebox and cut an access-point to repair. Plenty of videos to find. 8) Change all filters and change all fluids unless you have proof of last change. This is especially important with 4.7 and 4WD models. Most people look pass their transfer case, and differentials causing failures. They do need topped off and changed just like oil and coolant. Make sure to use proper fluids and not just any from the auto store. 9) For any with sunroofs, don’t use them or if you do be ready to repair or replace one getting stuck open (assuming it even does open or hasn’t recently been replaced). They’re prone to have drains clogging up too. That’s another relatively easy fix however the rear tubes may require dropping the headliner to clear out blockage. 10) Electrical issues and death wobble are your biggest concerns to look for when buying one. Dont cheap out on replacement parts. Keep up with maintenance and you will easily go 300k+ miles. But if you want a little more reliability get yourself a good live data code reader. Absolute necessity in my opinion for these things. Especially when doing you’re own repairs. Just empty every pocket is not a joke here if maintenance is not properly done, or cheap parts are used. Every week will seem like another issue. Keep these things maintained and you’re most likely to avoid being stuck somewhere unable to travel.

For under $100 do a battery post clean & if necessary terminal replacement. Use chemically treated felt washers under the terminals, dielectric grease & nylock nuts. Will stay solid tight & corrosion-free a long time.

Headlights are really important, since being blind at night sucks. Pioneer makes the AVH-3500NEX, which is a single-din with a motorized screen. There is a double-din kit for the WJ, but you have to transfer your vents over, which requires some butchery and melting.

I agree with the trim paint it's one of the first things I did. However I took a different path, I used black truck bed liner. I think the black makes the color stand out more and the texture looks nice. Plus it's made it easier to washer off all the Florida dirt.

@jw11432
@jw11432 3 жыл бұрын
Camshaft sensor is super easy. On the 4.7, it's on the bottom of the passenger side cylinder head, near the front of the engine, you can fairly easily see the plug/wiring going straight up into it. May need to remove battery and tray, but that's not super difficult. Crankshaft is harder to get to, might need to remove starter to get to it, if I recall correctly.

I’ve seen those pucks everyone talks about. They are problems down the road. They break in half and you never know till other parts are ruined. It also wears out the factory bolt positions when you lift anything outside of factory, causing major annoying squeaks and pops eventually. Tho I’ve only seen old modded heavy trucks with that problem. I don’t have a lot of experience with jeeps. Yet.😂

a lift on these is GREAT. I have an 01 limited also, and have 4" lift kit. GO with IronRock for sure! and unless you are really purpose building the thing for off-roading, I wouldn't bother with the long arm lift. It's substantially more expensive, and much more work to install. And honestly, a "normal" 3-4" lift is enough to be able to have a lot of fun off-road. Also get front sway-bar disconnects, cause these WJs can REALLY flex!

@overlandadventuresoffroad2078
@overlandadventuresoffroad2078 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffreystine7068 It probably won't hurt to put a new water pump in as well since you already did all that work. Make sure when you put new Coolant in it is HOAT G-5 coolant. That is what the WJ requires. Here is a link to really useful WJ information: wjjeeps.com/jmenu.htm I think you covered the biggest issue with the 4.7L in having overheating and the valve-seat dropping. Make sure you change the oil often, and I would suggest using full synthetic. Check out Martin Built here on youtube for more engine-bay mods, he is amazing, has the 4.7L and has the cleanest WJ I have ever seen. Here is a link to an excel sheet regarding lift/tire size as well as recommended part replacements/upgrades: www.jeepforum.com/forum/f310/wj-recommended-lift-tire-size-972118/ Typical Suspension issues with the WJ are Control Arm bushings going bad (if the rear go the jeep will feel like its all over the road). As for the drive-shafts, check to see if your front is a double cardon (Ujoint front and rear) or if you have the CV style. If you have the CV upgrade to the double cardon. If you lift the jeep above 3" it is advised to get custom length drive-shafts because of the angle from the T/C to the pinions. Also Check out D&E in the Garage on youtube, he puts up WJ content. I just started posting WJ content too if you want to check it out. Hopefully this helps to some extent.

I got one of these, in decent shape, for $600. 248k on the inline 6. Had to change the front driveshaft, and change just about every sensor. Only concern is my rocker panel rot, and the gas tank skid plate rusted through too. Doors and tailgate, wheel wells and fenders are all good. Going to a mechanic someday to do the brakes, and gonna get his opinion whether it's worth fixing that damage or not.
@robtheroadie2240
@robtheroadie2240 3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely worth replacing the gas tank skid plate! I did an Amazon search and found some really great options. It's just bolt-on so it should be really easy. I'm also pretty sure there's some videos that show you how to do it.
@TheNiteNinja19
@TheNiteNinja19 3 жыл бұрын
@@robtheroadie2240 I'm also considering the tank tuck mod, where you lift the gas tank into the place the spare tire is at. Then you just put the spare in the back like a 1st gen.
@robtheroadie2240
@robtheroadie2240 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheNiteNinja19 one of the main reasons I bought the WJ was because I could store my spare tire on underneath. That's also where I carry my off-road equipment like jumper cables tow strap etc. A 2 inch lift will make up most of the difference of a tank hanging down and might be easier to do than replacing a tank. Unless you already have a lift. If you do decide to replace the tank, see if you can get a larger capacity one.
@TheNiteNinja19
@TheNiteNinja19 3 жыл бұрын
@@robtheroadie2240 Yeah it's stock height but oversized tires. Whoever owned it before me even calibrated the speedo and cut the front bumper for clearance for the tires. Does very well, easily keeping up with my dad's 1st gen with a 4 inch lift and 32 inch tires (and even pulled him out of a mud hole that my little near stock 2nd gen crawled through no problem).

Besides the cabin air filter, you should make clear these are 5 "cosmetic" mods to do to your WJ. Also besides the cabin air filter, these are completely worthless and will not get your further down the road, only improving your creature comforts, which as WJ owners know, won't get you very far.

😂 don’t worry I got a video for you coming. I think the headlights one will get you further down the road by allowing you to see at night.

I def prefer stock...these things absolutely fall apart as soon as you add a lift kit and spacers. Does it look good...yes. Do you need to be ready to replace every other part in the Jeep...yes
@TireSlayer55

@@1992Bwhite Umm, no. These have many of the same components and similar design as other Jeeps like the XJ Cherokee and TJ Wrangler, and there are probably more of those around with lifts than stock ones at this point. Plenty of lifted WJ’s out there such as mine without the problems you describe as well. If your suspension is falling apart after a lift the lift may have exacerbated an existing problem, but your suspension was already worn and in need of maintenance. These Jeeps are 20 years old and be most have 125k or more now. Of course you’re gonna have to need to replace things like ball joints, tire rods, wheel bearings at some point. These are normal wear items on any vehicle. And of course bigger tires will cause already worn components to wear out even faster, more weight and leverage on the suspension, it’s simple physics. Don’t lift your jeep if you can’t afford to do basic maintenance. I’m tired of people saying these things are unreliable because they never spend a dime or turn a wrench on the vehicle and expect it to last indefinitely.
