The first 7 cards from Disney's Lorcana Trading Card Game have been revealed ahead of D23 this weekend. They look stunning AND give us some early insight into how the game plays. Let's take a first look at each of them!

The artwork on these cards, particularly the Mickey Mouse one whose style seems like a mixture of Epic Mickey and Paul Rudish's work, completely sold me on this game. I've never touched any sort of trading cards since I was a kid, but Lorcana might be what finally gets me into them.

The art is spot on. I like the card layout. Just waiting for rules, mechanics, and game play. So far so good.

This is complete speculation, but, about the small "droplets" in the lower right part of the cards: since a lot of articles seem to single out both magic and pokemon as inspiration for this game, and so far we've not really seen any evident pokemon mechanics, I think this may be a sort of "back end cost" of a card similar to prize cards in pokemon: some sort of resource your opponent obtains by defeating your creatures, or that you lose when your creatures are defeated. This explains also why more powerful creatures would have more of these.

The "Dreamborn" to me looks like alternative universe version of the character with more adventurous theming, Storyborn seems to be a more vanilla version, the one for the real movie. And floodborn from a beach ocean theme, this will open the door and excuse to do more extreme version of characters. Like having a "Mirrorborn" to get stuff like evil Elsa or good Maleficent. And play with themes and maybe that will be a deck limiting factor.

The diamonds could be a resource system but maybe it’s a like points system opponents get for beating a particular one in challenges?

@@lorcana_inkwell After seeing almost all the video related to Lorcana on KZfaq, I feel the best explanation for the "diamond" sign is the limitation for the cards (eg. fifteen 1 diamond cards, ten 2 diamond cards, etc.) At first glance, I felt it might be victory or mana point, but the diamonds for Mickey and Maleficent seems to have a huge difference for the equally strong cards imo. Regarding the rarity, I feel it will be on the bottom left corner for the actual set (eg. 1TFC·EN·11/SR = Super Rare). The /P1 could stand for Promo 1 for the 1TFC. Or they can just differentiate the rarity through foil treatment like YuGiOh. Above are my pure guesses XD, please kindly correct me if I am wrong. Looking forward to your future video. Cheers

Also if you replace the word ‘challenge’ by ‘attack’, it will all make sense. Captain Hook’s effect should only be activated when attacking and Cruella’s effect will only take place after she was attacked and destroyed. In another word, Cruella cannot attack to destroy herself to activate her effect. According to my understanding, her effect can only be triggered passively.

You know they could be using Cardfight Vanguard mechanic on damage and paying cost...more dmg you have, more cards you can play...but you lose at a certain point of stars you get....in Vanguard you lose at 6 damage...my speculation of course

I've got a hunch that they will be going on a Hearthstone route for the resource system. It won't be like lands from MTG, that's for sure. The closest it would come to MTG is FoW, with the resource deck being a separate deck with more consistency. MTG is just dated in that sense, unfortunately.

So I've seen a spoiler today regarding a FoW style resource deck... but I can't find a source on it. Could work though!

@@lorcana_inkwell it would be simply to streamline with a Hearthstone system, but you miss out on a ton of design space, so I'm hoping for a FoW system. :) Also, what are your thoughts on the diamonds on the right side? I'm thinking the whole game might be like Canadian Hoghlander, and those are essentially deck building values.
