Today, I am revealing which allotment plot I decided to go for!
I am going to bring you along with me for the very first look around, lets to see what we are working with!
I am also going to share an insight into why I chose this plot, and what factors made this plot the better choice (for me!) out of the five that were on offer!
This is the first allotment I have ever owned and I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and advice on the last video, I can't wait to hear what you think of my new allotment plot!
Don't forget to check out Shawn's channel, he grows amazing veg in his small home garden and has some exciting renovation projects coming up too! ‪@shawnsgarden3742‬
All the best and happy plotting!

Oh I'm so chuffed for you! Talking of perrenial plants, if you start to worry about space and having too much, don't forget about them. Strawberry patch, fruit bushes and raspberries, artichokes, fruit trees and loads more! Yesss! Get a flower bed! Think about things you can use in the kitchen and bathroom so you get double use! Please go careful with the generator! You don't need electricity down the allotment honestly! Ooooo, outdoor sink is always useful! Clean your veg before taking them home! Make some kinda of tap with bottled water or something maybe?! Go careful with the droppings, they're rat droppings. I always put a mask on, not sure if that's being extra, but I ain't taking the risk 😅😂😂 Sorry for the story, I just love new plots!! Always encourage a little pond somewhere as soon as possible, you'll get soooo much wildlife and now is the perfect time to plan one! Cannot wait for the journey 🎉💚🌱🥳

Hey Jake! So many options for the space, flowers are a must!! Haha thank you for the heads up on the gennie, there are a good few cables in the shed, including a locker full that I might want to avoid as well😅 The sink was kind of quirky, I'll have to cut it all back and see how to hook it up for sure! I will approach the shed with caution 🙅‍♀️ no need to apologise at all, that chats are great! 🤗🌼🍀

As a 10 year community crop plot gardener I'd start with the wood chair. #2 Then an inventory list of all I could easily see and a map showing measurements and placement of shed/coop. #3 Check into any rules or things like often water is only on in summer or there are common compost bins or piles of wood chips or compost from city sources or swap spots where you put what you have no use for and any other gardener can use it free or free plants or seeds or gardener seed swaps. #4 See if you can get contact info for the previous gardener who can answer questions about how of if things like generator vwork. Make contact with other gardeners to see what they can tell you about the plot and start building friendships. . #5 And the front grassy space. It would be fairly easy and get things growing. I'd consider flowers there. A new gate door. A bench. Everyone luvs mine. It's a simple one with 2 cinder blocks stacked then a few feet and 2 more with 3 pieces of concrete siding board. It's been sturdy to sit on and sit things on. I have a basic wire and bamboo trellis to shade it Maybe a bird feeder or a bee house and a garden name sign or something to pretty it up. #6 Give the shed and coop a good bleach scrub. Repair the hole. Decide if you might want 3 to 5 pullet hens and no rooster to start with chickens this year or next. #7 Clean and clear the area behind the shed. I don't think I'd move shed..too much work not enough reward. Don't change your channel name. Keep your tiny garden and content. Just add more ideo of your allotment as well. We get more to watch! And still be relevant to small urban or porch/patio gardeners

Thank you so much for the allotment starting out guide! Wow! I feel so blessed to have you here to share this knowledge and give me the confidence to tackle my new plot 🙈 I met one of the allotment holders, and he was so helpful at sharing some history on the plot before I arrived. He even offered me a fig tree, which was so kind! I definitely have rules on my list of things to discover. Things seem pretty easy going, which is nice! Disinfecting the shed is in my to-do list this weekend! I have some spare wood here I could nail in over the hole. I do want hens, you reckon 3 to 5 would fit in that cage, awesome! There are a couple of roosters on the site, I definitely heard those noisy boys the last day I was down there! That is such a thoughtful thing to say about the channel name, I feel so sentimental about the channel name, and I will still have my tiny garden no matter what. Nothing beats opening the door and grabbing something fresh to make a meal in a little as 5 steps! Honestly, thank you so much 💖

Nice plot Laura, there is lots to do so many hands make light work or whatever the saying goes, its a pity you are in Ireland or i would have given you a hand or two, so you will have to get some people to give you a hand instead, get the family involved or your other half if you have one. Get that grass done first then you will know better what's underneath plus the grass can go in the composter with the food scraps that you bring a win win there. All in all Laura good luck to you i'm looking forward to the transformation, the before and after shots. Take Care. Barry (Wirral, England)

I don’t know if you now or not but you can join pallet collars, there are pins in the metal corners that come out and you can open and join to another collar to make it bigger. Talking about what’s already planted, if you don’t know what it is leave it and wait and see what you get, if you don’t like it pull it out. The water on the site could be turned off, ours is turned off Nov 1st then back on April 1st.

So happy for you, and so happy you went with your gut feeling and not just the numbers. In the end, you're the one who has to be happy there. We're a bit easier to please 😁 We will still enjoy your content no matter what plot you picked. I think, moving the shed would be a neat idea. But if you would prefer not to look at your compost bin, I would think keeping it where it is would make most sense. I personally would keep it to not be looking at the bins. But can definitely see the advantage in moving it too. If you could get the sink working, you could arrange that area into a proper potting/planting area, and also nice to clan your veggies before brining them home with you. I think that could turn out to be a neat little working station. Definitely droppings on the floor, I would advise caution and wear a mask when you clean that out, same with the chicken coop. Better safe than sorry.
@thetinygarden_
@thetinygarden_ 5 ай бұрын
Oh I am so pleased to hear I didn't disappoint with my choice, plot one was quite popular! I definately like to idea of having the space behind the shed to it to store all the bulk items. The sink is so quirky! I like the idea of having it as a potting station! I am so used to grabbing veg from the garden at home and bringing it in to wash I didnt think about the benefit of a sink at the plot at first glance! 😅 I am going to look at a safe mask for the droppings, once that is clear I will feel much more comfortable to place my bag and things down 😅😷🧹

This may not be a popular opinion, and sorry if I'm too straightforward, but as long as you are happy, you could never disappoint. I also have q raised bed with irrigation which connects to the hose and within 1 foot of the sink connection, so super helpful n fully disconnected when not required n hose can be stored away from wandering hands. Oh how Exciting. AND YOU'VE got this, Laura!!! [1] First thing is getting rid of all the weeds, trash, and debris. Then you can get a better look at what needs to be done. Get it all down to the bare bones. There is enough yard waste there to fill up 8 compost bins. lol [2] Love the idea of your own beds in there since you do such a great job making them. [3] Ask anyone [viewers and friends] if they want to get into "SEED EXCHANGES" as a group [Cooperative]. Exchanging means NO MONEY SPENT!! [4] Great Idea moving the fence forward and centering the gate to go in there. [5] that plot looks more like 20 ft x 35-40 ft to me.
@thetinygarden_
@thetinygarden_ 5 ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! 💖 8 composter bins worth, you are probably not wrong 🤣! The seed exchange sounds so cool i did see a few groups online doing this. I've always wanted to save some of my own seed but with the home garden space was a premium and leaving soil fallow to drying seeds heads was something I had to compromise on, so maybe I can learn a bit about that in the seasons to come! I am so pleased you like the idea to centre the gate! You could be totally right on the plot size by the way, how accurate can a few paces be anyway!! 🤷‍♀️🥾
@ms.farmgirl
@ms.farmgirl 5 ай бұрын
@@thetinygarden_ THANK YOU for the reply, Laura. No compromising now with a plot of your own! It's so fantastic. I'm just worried you will get so deep into this it will consume you like Organic farming has done to me. Keep in mind the larger the land, the bigger the obsessions get. lol Another Channel that I follow just got his plot in Bristol. He is over the moon with joy getting his own plot. [2] When I am drying larger seeds,, like squash, pumpkin, etc. I put on parchment paper for a few days, then I put them in glass jars with screw on Rings that have the screen lids. After a few months so they are totally dry, I put them in my own seed enveloped that I designed, printed, folded and glued into seed packages that I write their details on. These are the screw on rings with screen lids you can order for sprouting [I love sprouts for salads and sandwiches ] . By putting them in jars with screen lids, they won't mold while drying, and take up limited space. They need that air flow to dry.. [3] YES TO THE CENTER GATE,, with maybe a trellis type arch over the top with a cute sign attached. "Laura's Plotting" perhaps?? lol [4] Since Compost is "BLACK GOLD" for gardeners [and us organic farmers], the more the better. Those pallets would make great composting bins. I wouldn't use that big trash bin for composting since there is zero air flow or drainage. I'd just use it for putting in the shovels, rakes, any long handle tools, or wood pieces. But punch holes in the bottom so they aren't sitting in water after it rains. I have zero waste since I compost everything. Even envelopes, cardboard or any paper products. I shred as best as I can and compost it. Just make sure there is no plastics in anything like envelopes with plastic windows.. [5] Paces DO WORK if you know your footstep distance. Mine is too wonky to be relied on. My 12 inches paces, would be 9 or 14. lol . So I just keep a tape measure in my gardening tool belt with my pens, markers, secateurs, knife, and hori hori. lol [6] I simply can't wait to see the progress as it happens in your plot. My entire 🍀🍀 family is cheering you on for success. it's going to be Brilliant.

Wow, I am green with envy looking at that plot! Even the ones you rejected. I garden in a 20' x 20' plot in community garden here in Texas. No space for sheds, and in fact you have to be mindful of where you put trellises and tall plants so you don't shade your neighbor's plot. On the other hand, it is great to be able to garden in the middle of a big city. One thing I love is to walk around and see what other gardeners are doing. There are over 200 plots at least, so quite a diversity of methods.

Hey Elisabet, I did have my name down for a community space too and it worked the very same way you describe! I never thought I would have the option for a plot and I am so grateful!! If those are raspberry canes under the cage thing then you want to cut them down to just above soil level now. They seem quite light in colour though. Raspberries can be either summer or autumn fruiting varieties. Not sure what the difference in eating or quantity properties between the two are. I dug all the raspberries out of my my new plot last year as I didn't really want them there as my plot is a tiny half plot. Maybe half to two thirds your plot size. I think they were autumn fruiting ones and they weren't very productive. I kind of feel you need a big space to grow enough raspberries to make it worthwhile. Although I didn't really feed the plants or anything. There's just things I would rather grow instead I guess. I would definitely move that fence I think. I would perhaps even consider getting rid of the chicken shed. Seems to be a lot space. Then you could grow more on the area. My plot came with a small shed - not as big as yours and no window but I live so close to the allotment I don't need a place to sow and pot things up really. I wonder if the generator was to heat the shed for the chickens on very cold winter nights? Or maybe the person spent a lot of time there so wanted a heater. Or perhaps it was to generate electricity for a pump to make the tap work.
@thetinygarden_
@thetinygarden_ 5 ай бұрын
Hey 👋I don't think they are canes (it could be nettles?) I have raspberries in containers at home I am not sure I would want them in ground as I heard their spread can be prolific and agree with you on the productivity side of things, I got a few punnets (they were gorgeous though!) Given the size of your plot and space being a premium, do you have one crop that you find most valuable/productive for you that you couldn't be without? I hope to meet some of my neighbours to learn more about how the space was used, I am intrigued with the generator and all the cables I have to say! 👀😁🍀
@nitelite78

@@thetinygarden_ Yes, that was another reason why I wanted to remove the raspberries - the rhizomes branch out under the soil and start popping up everywhere. Just like mint does. My favourite thing I grew last year was French beans. This is my favourite veg to eat and the variety I grew called Cobra were prolific and really tasty - significantly better than supermarket bought french beans. I didn't really prepare a proper bed for them - I just cleared some space and added some compost to planting holes and grew them up a cane A frame. I was surprised at how well they did. I was picking beans for a good couple of months. My Crown Prince Squash did spectacularly well too. Had 4 huge squash from just two plants (one was almost 6kg). Much bigger than ones I had grown at home. Very good variety well known for its taste. If anything they did a bit too well - it's hard to get through a 6kg squash/pumpkin so this year I'm going to be trying Uchiki Kuri squash too as they should be more manageable in eating. I had a great crop of carrots too for the first time although I grew them in containers last year. I think they did well because I covered them up so root fly couldn't get at them. This year I am planning on building a dedicated deep bed for carrots - will be 3 decking boards high so just over 40cm high. Will need to find a lot of soil and compost to fill that! Honestly it's really only my first full year with the plot as we didn't get it until June last year so I'm really excited to be growing loads of things this year.

you've made a wonderful choice, Laura, and I am so excited for you ❤️ please make sure you wear a mask when you clean out your shed and chicken coop. Chickens are really good at eating the bugs that eat your garden greens, so maybe you should consider that one day to have a few hens 😊. Just a thought, I did not see any water catchment off the roof. I know you are in Ireland, but even there, having your own water will give you more freedom to grow. So I would put in gutters, pipes and barrels to get water collected during the winter and spring months. Otherwise I would add a small wildlife pond, helps with pollinators and pest control. Excellent choice on the plot! Congrats

@thetinygarden_ my first 2 years I tried all new things. Imagine the squash you can do 🤯🤯🤯🤯 One tip if you do raspberries they go CRAZY and sprout up all over so be selective where you put them lol I'm pleased I put mine along the fence line out the way 🤣 This year I'm getting a pickup load of wood chip which is £60 to tidy the paths up and making another brassica section. I noticed the pile of woodchip which is brilliant. Getting it free where I live is like finding hens teeth.
@thetinygarden_
@thetinygarden_ 5 ай бұрын
I have heard that about raspberries, I did mine in buckets at home only for the reason that I didn't have any inground space but I think I will always do them in containers now that I know they can be hardwork to manage! Imagine the squashh!!! The woodchip is fab and I was told I can ring the local farmer for manure and he will drop it over for next to nothing! I just need to decide if I am going to do grass paths or woodchip 🤷‍♀️
@traceysallotment2506
@traceysallotment2506 5 ай бұрын
@thetinygarden_ I just did mine wood chip with it being a field so didn't want all the weeds coming through as much and we put membrane down first. Needs more adding this year for sure. Yeah our neighbours are horses and the farm behind our plot have cows 🐄 so we are lucky with manure too. We don't have a water pipe either so we collect in a big barrel but we get on great with the farmer and they said we could use their water pipe to fill the barrel if needed. Amazing what a bag of fruit and vege can do 🤣 Exciting times ahead 🥰
