You changed some electronic box on the back wall to change the speed of your lathe. Do you have a variable frequency driver or something similar? Is there some way you can repair whatever is causing that "clicking"?
@chris-the-bodge-sculptor8 жыл бұрын
the lathe had a 3 hp single phase motor when I bought it that tripped out all my power when started , so I fitted a Clarke brand 3 phase motor that could run on single phase 240v power supply using a phase inverter, those gaining motor speed control and reversing programmable soft start and motor braking!, lo the clicking is coming from the headstock, well it is over 50 years old :) I have vids on the motor in " lathe section"

Hint put the cutter upside down and run the lathe in reverse, This way you never need to stop in the right place.

The mower will most likely have a Briggs and Stratton engine, which means that the thread will be 1/4” UNC, not Whitworth . . . The Whitworth thread form has a 55 degree included thread angle, whilst the American UNC thread angle is 60 degrees. There are other differences of thread form, root radius and effective diameter which means that correctly formed threads will not match together - however, a slack thread might ! But it will not be very strong . . . . The top slide angle should be set so that the rear face of the cutting tool effectively slides down the front flank of the following thread, which means that, if the scale reads zero degrees on the top slide angle, when the top slide is parallel to the lathe ways, the the angle that it should be set to is : 90 - 27.5 ( half the included thread angle ) = 62.5 degrees For the UNC thread that I think that you should be cutting, that angle is : 90 - 30 = 60 degrees. To cut a metric thread and use the thread cutting dial, you need to have a metric leadscrew, which of course, your machine does not have . . . The lever marked metric and imperial simply changes the gear ratio and introduces a ‘fix factor’ to alter the rotational speed of the leadscrew, so that it will move the carriage forward at a “metric” feed rate. The clasp nut will still only engage with the leadscrew at imperial distances, and these Do Not repeat at the indications on the thread cutting dial, which leads to the problems that you have found ! There exists the possibility, on your Colchester, of running the machine in reverse and mounting the screw cutting tool in a rear tool holder. This gives the opportunity to screw cut away from a shoulder, towards the end of a thread. Joe Pie, on his channel explains all the details, and he is a master of the art ! His videos on screw cutting ( and all things machining ) are well worth watching . . . . Kind regards, Steve A.

Thank you Steve , that’s the best explanation I’ve heard ! Great idea about running the lathe in reverse with the tool holder on the rear

From the sounds of `er wha`, i deduce a broken gear tooth in the lower gears... Sounds like a single broken tooth that when encountered at speed, via the momentum of the things just skips the position wholly, smacking into the next tooth with what little run up the system managed to achieve in that short interval... I could be wrong, but that`s what it sounds like to me... Just found your channel, so i dont know if you diagnosed/changed the offending part as of yet, but we shall see... I myself have quite some shit to deal with in my shop... More like 9 machines in need of general restoration and 1 in need of complete service and 2 baby machines that are in tip top shape... Well, i lie, the baby lathe has a tailstock issue to resolve, but that is a single precise bore worth of work to solve that... I`m just too lazy atm to deal with that little bugger... So one could say that i have some experience with machines not sounding as they should All the best!
@chris-the-bodge-sculptor9 ай бұрын
Hi ! Thank you 😊, there’s definitely something going on in there… I’ve never been brave enough to look inside… I bought it untested… young and foolish, I don’t use it much as I should
@camillosteuss9 ай бұрын
@@chris-the-bodge-sculptor Oh, dont worry, i too have done my fair share of picking up machinery that is either untested or in need of severe reconditioning and general restoration... On one hand, it offers you the ability to snag ridiculous machinery for pennies, on the other hand, it offers you the ability to conjure a task as laborious as pregnancy yet one that can last much longer... If she is free of cracks in the main casting, she can be restored to perfection... That is my motto... Machines just need a lot of love and double the amount of elbow grease... All the best and kind regards!
