This video was so good. Doing good things with a hawthorn that I saw many years ago in the first years of your KZfaq career. No sudden hidden commercials for growlamps or tools. I recognized the guy who (with others)helped me on my bonsai journey. I like you like that. The guy from a couple of years ago.👍👍👍

Hey, you made a comment about no fertiliser in the first year on a newly dug tree. That's good to know, I'll do a bit more research on the prunus type and my area first (Australia so a lot of sun and therefore a lot of watering). Thanks for the advice
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
No worries, not sure if you saw it, but I also mentioned to wait for vigorous growth in the second year. Collected trees grow using stored energy in the first season, so 2nd season onwards is when you know if it has established roots. Keep it light until you know it’s found it’s feet, very easy to over fertilise in the first few years

@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
There are differences of opinion among pros when it comes to fertilising trees that have compromised roots. I personally recommend waiting until vigorous growth is observed before fertilising nursery trees. It’s only trees dug from the ground that can trick you into thinking they are ready. Hope that helps

Thanks! It has been sulking. I'm not surprised, but maybe did too much. Also I should have removed the flowers as a stressed tree can prioritise reproduction over root growth. My bad! cheers

Where do you find your trees ? Do you grow them from the beginning or find it in the nature? In my forest i only find normal straight trees or very small ones
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 10 ай бұрын
Forest trees tend to reach up for the light. Look along the edges of fire roads or anywhere that is frequently cut back. Boggy areas are also worth a look. Also where deer or cattle graze. My collected trees either come from gardens or are purchased from someone else, there aren’t any good places around me that permission can be obtained

That fertiliser being used, is it just tea bags or a specific bonsai fertiliser in the format of tea bags? If the second, which brand are you using?
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
I fill empty teabags with organic fertiliser pellets. I can’t remember the brand (transferred it to a bucket and binned the bag), but it’s 5-5-5 NPK and isn’t bonsai specific. Will have to search again when it runs out

Absolutely 💯 great work on that tree. But dont you find 100% akadama to hold to much water in your climate?
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
Thanks. No, but I keep most trees under cover in winter, this one wasn’t. In fairness the soil at the bottom was dead roots and gravel rather than akadama. No wonder it was so heavy!
@thenaturecreater8906
@thenaturecreater8906 11 ай бұрын
@grobonsai I see. It looked heavy 🤣 can I ask you a really newbi question. Do you wait to the top layer is all dry before you water. I had a problem with root rot last year. My soil is free draining. But I think I was a little heavy on the watering
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
It depends on the species. Hornbeam no, but mostly yes. Also it depends on the stage of growth. Fresh growth wilts very easily, whereas hardened off growth is less critical so I’ll let it dry a little longer. Rotting roots isn’t necessarily a sign of over watering though
