The last two books I bought were American Royals by Katharine McGee and Cascade Failure by L. M. Sagas. Both are highly anticipated reads for me. cascade Failure came out this year but American royals have been out for a few years. I highly suggest people try both of these.

About the Stormlight Archive, I definitly recommend reading the two that you have left before the next one comes out. Realistically you probably won't be able to read the fifth book this year as it comes out only in December, but you could try to get up to date before the end of the year. I also recommend reading or watching a recap of the previous two books otherwise you'll be lost when you start Oathbringer.

If you want to read about villains, I 100% recommend Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots. It's so much more than Starter Villain. Instead of inheriting the villain role, the main character is a temp data analyst working for a villain who gets seriously injured by a superhero. She does the numbers and finds that superheros are doing more harm than good in the world... so who is the real villain? It's the start of a series and the next book is coming out this year I believe.

I feel you on the ending to Divine Rivals. I actually enjoyed the book, but the ending was….abrupt? One thing I learned though, is that the series is just two books, and honestly the two together are still shorter than one Sanderson, so I guess I’m more forgiving? I dunno. I’m in the middle of the sequel now. Side note: The sequel also has a typewriter on the cover, but this time it says “Dear Roman”. If you’re the type of person to buy books for the pretty factor then it may be worth it. 😂

Ngl the movie novelization of Godzilla x Kong was my fav new book, it was everyting Kaiju Preservation Society should have been and is a lot better than the movie itself. Starter Villain is very comfortably my worst book of 2024, no other books even come close 😌 There's a scene about 80 pages in that I think is a great test for if you'll like the humor or not. It's hella marmite: either you find it funny and it makes you want to read the book, or it's cringey af and makes you DNF.

I just got a couple books from the library sale and a LFL. I immediately read Orange is the New Black and I thought it was written in a way that was hard to put down. I think it struck a good balance of the author's experiences in prison, but also the author's good fortune for being white, had supportive family and friends, having people who can give her money for commissary, being able to afford a good lawyer, etc. She also strikes a good balance between the fact that she did harm people with her actions and deserves to be legally punished, but also the prison system in the US being awful and so many people who don't deserve to be there (or don't deserve to be there for so long). They could pay their debts to society in other ways, but prisons are such good sources of free/cheap labor, of course the government is gonna toss people in there. And how prisons need huge reforms in conditions, how they treat people, etc. And I finally read Invisible Women that I bought years ago, and I'm glad I read it even if it made me really mad. Thanks for the recommendation, from a long time ago.

Regarding Divine Rivals, as someone who has some experience working for a newspaper, description of the job in the book made me cringe more than the cheesy romance. It’s not like I expect realistic portrayal of different occupations in a fantasy novel, but make it less „this Barbie is a journalist”. That being said, the cheesy romance was the right kind of cheese for me 🧀 Second book is not worth reading anyway IMO.
